Mieczyslaw Weinryb My Town Of Zamosc (Polish Audio | English Subtitle)
Mieczyslaw Weinryb's collection of pictures and stories provide us with a fascinating glimpse of Jewish life in Poland before the war. He grew up in one of the loveliest small towns in Poland, Zamosc, and through his memories and old pictures, Mieczyslaw takes us into his Zionist youth club, Hashomer Hazair. We also see and hear just how varied Jewish life was in Poland in the 1930s--from yiddishists to socialists, zionists to the orthodox.
Mieczyslaw, like nearly all of Centropa's Polish interviewees, fled into the Soviet Union when war came. Mieczyslaw survived the war in the Ural mountains, joined the Society of Polish Patriots, and returned home to Poland to find his entire family had been murdered (save for his two sisters who had already emigrated to Palestine).
In Mieczyslaw's biography, which you can access from the link on this page, he tells us what life was like for Jews in post-war Poland. He married a non-Jewish woman, Izabella, and their son, Eligiusz, graduated university in Warsaw and now teaches physics at Yale in the United States.

Zbiory fotografii i relacji Mieczysława Weinryba umożliwiają fascynujący wgląd w życie żydowskie w przedwojennej Polsce. Mieczysław dorastał w jednym z najbardziej uroczych polskich miasteczek - Zamościu. Jego wspomnienia i stare fotografie odkrywają przed nami historię klubu syjonistycznego Ha-Szomer Ha-Cair. Co więcej, dowiadujemy się z nich, jak różnorodny był świat polskich Żydów tamtego okresu - jidyszystów, socjalistów, syjonistów, ortodoksów.
Gdy wybuchła wojna, Mieczysław - podobnie jak niemalże wszyscy polscy rozmówcy Centropy - uciekł do Związku Radzieckiego. Lata wojenne przeżył w górach Uralu. Przyłączywszy się do Związku Patriotów Polskich, wrócił do Polski. Tutaj dowiedział się, że cała jego rodzina - z wyjątkiem dwóch sióstr, które wyemigrowały do Palestyny - została zamordowana.
W swojej biografii, dostępnej poprzez odnośnik na tej stronie, Mieczysław opowiada o sytuacji Żydów w powojennej Polsce. On sam ożenił się z nieżydówką, Izabelą, a ich wspólny syn, Eligiusz, ukończył Uniwersytet Warszawski. Obecnie jest on wykładowcą fizyki na Uniwersytecie Yale w Stanach Zjednoczonych.

Video I shot when I was on my way to Stary Miasto (Old City) in Zamość, Poland set to background music. The first clip of motorcycle riders doing stunts is not actually in Zamość. It's about 5 km away, in the direction of Hrubieszów. Then there's the clip of a cool, color-changing water fountain I came across at night. Finally, I have a clip of the City Hall, which used to be a castle, and surrounding buildings. Enjoy!
