Travel Lithuania - Visiting the Town Hall of Kaunas
Take a tour of Kaunas Town Hall in Kaunas, Lithuania -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Smaller only than Vilnius is Kaunas, Lithuania; a stunning architectural city ideally situated on the convergence of the massive Nemanus and Neris rivers.
Since it was erected in the 1500's, the treasured Kaunas Town Hall has had many functions including an Orthodox church, residence for the czar, and Russian playhouse.
Having been reconstructed multiple times throughout the centuries, the current structure is immensely different from its original form.
It is rumored that it began as a one story building, followed by the addition of the 8-storied tower used to house prison inmates.
Later on, an additional floor was built in Baroque style decor, along with notable sculptures of Lithuania's Great Dukes.
Presently, the Town Hall stands in the Old City Square, and is used to host weddings, greet visitors and prestigious guests, as well as for official business.
The City of Vilnius, Lithuania - 20th January, 2013
Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, and its largest city, with a population of 554,060 (838,852 together with Vilnius County) as of 2011. It is located in the southeast of the country. It is the second biggest city of the Baltic states, after Riga.
Vilnius is the seat of the Vilnius city municipality and of the Vilnius district municipality. It is also the capital of Vilnius County. The first known written record of Vilnius as the Lithuanian capital is known from Gediminas' letters in 1323.
Vilnius is classified as a Gamma global city according to GaWC studies, and is known for its Old Town of beautiful architecture, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Its Jewish influence until the 20th century has led to it being described as the Jerusalem of Lita and Napoleon named it the Jerusalem of the North as he was passing through in 1812. In the year 2009, Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture, together with the Austrian city of Linz.
Vilnius has been rapidly transformed, and the town has emerged as a modern European city. Many of its older buildings have been renovated, and a business and commercial area is being developed into the New City Centre, expected to become the city's main administrative and business district on the north side of the Neris river. This area includes modern residential and retail space, with the municipality building and the 129-metre (423') Europa Tower as its most prominent buildings. The construction of Swedbank's headquarters is symbolic of the importance of Scandinavian banks in Vilnius. The building complex Vilnius Business Harbour was built in 2008, and one of its towers is now the 5th tallest building in Lithuania. More buildings are scheduled for construction in the area. Vilnius was selected as a 2009 European Capital of Culture, along with Linz, the capital of Upper Austria.

The Cathedral of Vilnius is the main Roman Catholic Cathedral of Lithuania. It is situated in Vilnius Old Town, just off of Cathedral Square. Dedicated to Saints Stanislaus and Ladislaus, the church is the heart of Catholic spiritual life in Lithuania. The coronations of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania took place within its confines. Inside its crypts and catacombs are buried many famous people from Lithuanian and Polish history including Vytautas (1430), his wife Anna (1418), his brother Sigismund (Žygimantas) (1440), his cousin Švitrigaila (1452), Saint Casimir (1484), Alexander Jagiellon (1506), and two wives of Sigismund II Augustus: Elisabeth of Habsburg (1545) and Barbara Radziwiłł (1551). The heart of the Polish king Władysław IV Vasa was buried there upon his death, although the rest of his body is buried at the Wawel Cathedral in Kraków.
Inside, there are more than forty works of art dating from the 16th through 19th centuries, including frescoes and paintings of various sizes. During the restoration of the Cathedral, the altars of a presumed pagan temple and the original floor, laid during the reign of King Mindaugas, were uncovered. In addition, the remains of the cathedral built in 1387 were also located. A fresco dating from the end of the 14th century, the oldest known fresco in Lithuania, was found on the wall of one of the cathedral's underground chapels.
During the Soviet regime initially the cathedral was converted into a warehouse. Masses were celebrated again starting in 1985, although the cathedral was still officially called The Gallery of Images at that time. In 1989, its status as a cathedral was restored.Wikipedia
