Midday Shadows from the balcony of the Townhouse Gallery, Cairo
CairoLiveTV presents: Townhouse Gallery's Hacker Space
There's always something interesting going on at Downtown Cairo's Townhouse Gallery
The contemporary arts center is currently hosting something called the Cairo Hackerspace -- an opensource community lab that's also a workspace and resource center where engineers, designers, scientists, artists and everyone else can collaborate and share ideas and tools.
In the gallery you will find people like Tarek Ahmed Omar, a 23 year old who is one of the founders of Cairo Hackerspace helping visitors use the Maker Bot, an amazing Do It Yourself 3-D printer.
That's right -- 3-D printing has made it to Cairo!
There's also an Egg Bot that can automatically color eggs (just in time for Easter), along with a lot of other unexpected intersections between technology and art.
Welcome to the future...

Koshary night
Every neighborhood in Egypt is home to multiple koshary restaurants or mobile kiosks that sell koshary on the street. This spicy dish is a mix of carbohydrates—pasta, rice, and lentils—smothered in a rich tomato sauce and topped with fried onions. It is always served in generous proportions and leaves one feeling full and lethargic, content to wait out the time until the next meal. Koshary is delicious, unhealthy, and inexpensive, and many Egyptians eat it frequently, out of financial necessity.
Throughout the twentieth century until today, the Middle East has been the subject of repeated peace agreements, forums, and dialogues. Whether those involved in the talks are Arabs, Europeans, or Americans, the results have generally been the same. Hands are shaken, photographs taken, and the leaders return to their homes feeling much the way someone does after finishing up the last of the koshary in the bowl: Content, satisfied, the problem solved . . . until the grumble of discontent begins again.
While I hope the installation Koshary min Zamaan makes this concept clear through the mix of photographic images of politicians eating koshary, piles of plastic containers, and takeaway stickers, the opening night meal added a relational element to the work. As artists Nader and Sherif Sadek and I served koshary from a makeshift stall, museum visitors were able to participate in the exhibition, eating a casual meal at shared tables, as is typical of koshary restaurants in Egypt. Thus, Americans were able to experience for themselves both the appetizing taste and the sluggish hangover of koshary. Empty calories, like so much political rhetoric.

Case in Cairo
Cairo’s streets witnessed two graffiti murals being added to its burgeoning street art scene from the famous German photo realist and graffiti artist, Andreas von Chrzanowski, or as he’s more popularly known on the street, CASE. Originally invited along with his crew Ma’Claim (or ‘My Part) for Goethe-Institute Alexandria’s ongoing project “Graffiti: Style, History, Experience” project, CASE decided to stay on and complete a mission of his own, part duty and part personal.
His duty, or rather what he feels is a personal obligation, was to bring his rendition of Khaled Said from Berlin to Cairo. CASE was the creative mastermind behind the Khaled Said portrait on two slabs from the Berlin Wall and his aim in Cairo was to recreate this same portrait, but, this time, adding another martyr, Mina Daniel. The project proved much more daunting to produce on Cairo’s still politically charged streets. Through conversations with local artists and gallery directors who warned against the possible negative reaction from the street and the overproduction of Daniel and Said figures all over Egypt, CASE decided that an abstract interpretation would be a more authentic creation.
Down one of the tight side streets of Cairo’s downtown and home to the prominent Townhouse Gallery lies CASE’s mural. Passing an industrial base of car repair shops, the mural sits comfortably between a calligrapher and a glassmaker’s shop. At the forefront is the face of a boy whom CASE had met while spraying another wall for one of Goethe-Institute’s Cairo locations. The boy, so real you forget he is graffiti, smiles innocently, his red t-shirt expertly integrated with the colors of the wall. Behind him are simple, black stencils of Mina Daniel and Khaled Said. For CASE, “the mural represents the hope we all have for the coming generations in Egypt.” It is a message of continuity, of hope beyond the sometimes ugly past.
On another wall and in a much more crowded street lies CASE’s personal mission. Strategically placed across from the Ministry of Interior, on the walls of MAKAN, this mural is his own message. Spraying the bottom half of his face, CASE attaches a word bubble with his fingers, placed instead of words, holding up the PEACE sign.
CASE was joined by the prolific independent photographer and videographer, Joel Sames, whose short video documentation on the making of the Khaled Said portrait in Berlin impacted audiences in Cairo and Alexandria.

I am at the heart of the Egyptian contemporary art scene. I have come here, I've been here for 20 years photographing and doing and so on but I've been living here for the past 11 years consciously making the choice to be part of something that had a lot of potential to grow.

We wanted to create a place where people came to us as opposed to us having to go to them and now people do. Almost every major curator working on the biennale scene has walked through this space looking at artists. So if you're an artist in Cairo today you have an opportunity of meeting curators that you would not even be able to get near if you were in London, and they know it. And it's great because the work is really strong.

Egypt: Graffiti as a Revolutionary Art Tool
Since the revolution in Egypt began and ultimately toppled President Hosni Mubarak in January, graffiti has been the prime medium to express a new sense of freedom.
Walls in Cairo have been transformed into canvases of street art, illustrating peace and civil liberties.
Traditional or contemporary, these spray-can wielding artists use various forms, including stenciling, to produce their creations. However, the common theme of all the artwork is social media, which was at the forefront of the regional uprisings.
The Townhouse Gallery realized the flourishing popularity of graffiti and recently dedicated an exhibition, titled This is not Graffiti, to the unique art form.
Meanwhile, Masterpeace, a grassroots group in Cairo, took this opportunity as a source of inspiration for a new campaign called Cairo -- peace village which encourages the safeguarding of revolutionary values.
In Tahrir we lived in peace for 18 days. We all sang and dreamed and danced and recited poetry for one goal. We want these values to be present in our daily lives so we decided on a week-long initiative to re-live that atmosphere. So everyone can take these values home for their society, for themselves, their neighbors and for the environment, said Ragdha el-Halawany, Masterpeace organizer.
More than a hundred volunteers came together in the area of Dokki, in the capitol, to paint murals on the Ministry of Agriculture building, as part of the festival.
All initiatives have been liberated with the idea that so long as it is for the good of the cause then the decision can be taken instantly. And it didn't take us long to get approval for this event from the Governor. So we've been liberated from the bureaucratic, idiotic way of thinking which kept you in fear of several different agencies. This has all vanished and as long as those responsible know deep down that what you're doing is right, you can be assured that they will make the right decision, said Radi Ahmed Amin, local official in Dokki.

Cairo Hackerspace and Visting AUC
After a few days of being in Egypt, we went to the place where Maker Faire Africa was located this year. After that we met up with some of the Cairo Hackerspace crew, Tarek, Ahmed, and Deyaa. We had a look around the temporary space, ate some awesome food, and they did some work on finishing the MakerBot.
Kids Hack Day Kickoff Event - Cairo, Egypt
This footage is based on the very first Kids Hack Day Cairo event that took place on January 20th, 2015, at Cairo Hackerspace.
Kids Hack Day is a global movement that organizes several one-off days of immersive technology-related activities for kids. The goal is to supplement traditional education curriculums worldwide with these hack days. The hack days are intended to inspire creativity and provide a hands-on approach to learning about technology, which we believe is lacking in schools.
