This was all filmed on my B camera, my Sony RX100VI as I didn't want to be putting larger cameras in peoples faces. We played some African drums & met some of the locals. Part of the money for the tour went towards helping some of the initiatives we saw on the day.

Cape Town was the starting city of the tour From Cape Town to Victoria Falls. We did this tour by truck, organized by Sawadee Reizen.
The first day of the tour we stayed in Cape Town where we did the Township Cape Town Tour. The township tour brougt us first through Bo Kaap, the High Court, the City Hall, the Grand Parade and the Muir Street Mosque. After that we visited several townships: Langa, Gugulethu and Bonteheuwel. Ofcourse we visited the Waterfront and the Cape Town Stadium as well.

Township Tours in Nelson Mandela Bay - South Africa
Nelson Mandela Bays Townships are steeped in history, tradition and culture. From their modest beginnings they have flourished into hubs of activity and social life. The feeling of Ubuntu (meaning Humanity in Xhosa) surrounds their very existence.
Origins of Local Townships
Walmer Township Port Elizabeths first township formed part of the Welbedaght farm before it was laid out as a township by Mr McDonald, a government surveyor in 1851.
New Brighton The Township grew around the railway station built in 1877. It includes Red Location, White Location, McNamee, Boastville, Elundini and KwaFord. Red Location is a settlement of mostly tin shanties. The name originated from the oxide colourant used to protect the corrugated iron structures and roofs from rust, which have become a trademark in the area. After the war the Blacks from Bubbas location were housed here. White Location was the first economic housing scheme that was built there after the Urban Areas Act of 1923. Africans from Strangers Location, Russell Road and Coopers Kloof located here by 1904.
Kwa-Zakhele Kwa-Zakhele meaning place to built yourself in Xhosa, was established in 1956. Its families moved in from Korsten, a nearby mixed-race township.
KwaMagxaki KwaMagxaki was established in 1985 and is the second highest income suburb occupied mainly by a diversified group of professionals, business people and civil servants.
Kwa-Dwesi Kwa-Dwesi was started during the late 1980s, it is also occupied mainly by a mixture of professional business people and civil servants.
Zwide It was named after Fair Hansen Manchinger Zwide, the principal of the Bethelsdorp Coloured Primary School. Mr Zwide was a community leader and was elected onto many committees and forums.
Swartkops Formerly Zwartkops, a village on the farm Fishwater Flats.
Motherwell A recent Township formed in the late 1980s to accommodate the expanding population. It is the largest township in the Port Elizabeth region.
Informal Street Vendors
As the informal sector grows, roadside hawkers are ever increasing their supply of wares. These range from fresh fruit and vegetables to clothing garments, wooden and beaded wire African Crafts. The most popular vending areas extends along Govan Mbeki Avenue as well as in front of Builders Express on the corner of Main Road and Eighth Avenue, Walmer.
Shebeen Tours
Shebeens (informal drinking halls) were once illegal because they were not licensed for the sale of liquor, but have now become (legally) a lively cross between social clubs, a bar and a general meeting place. A Shebeen tour offers an entertaining 3 4 hours through the life and soul of the Townships. Shebeens come alive over weekends when hard work is replaced by beer and laughter. These venues are found on every street corner and add to the atmosphere of Township life. Amid hooting taxis and eager pedestrians, the Shebeen offers an informal venue where patrons can relax.
Political and Historical Township Tours
Visitors who wish to explore South Africas politics and history, may opt for a number of organised social, history and traditional township tours. These tours unveil how history evolved, encompassing diverse peoples and cultures and including a visit to the historical townships demonstrating the impact of the apartheid era on the city. In the townships one will see what limitations applied in the past and how people resisted and adapted. Township life first-hand may be a thought-provoking experience, but visitors are likely to experience a current spirit of optimism. For marketers and planners, this is where the future of South Africa will be shaped. Various accredited tour operators offer social history / township tours and shebeen tours.
The Red Location Museum of Struggle is a must-see on any visitors itinerary. The museum, which was opened in November 2006, commemorates South Africas turbulent apartheid history and long struggle for freedom. Several prestigious awards have been bestowed on the museum for its magnificent architecture. The museum is situated in the historical Red Location, the citys first black township, where the first urban Black families settled in the 1900s.

Didn't talk to much but this was our first visit to the Townships where we're all working. The first place you've seen is the school that I work at, Zenzeleni Waldorf. Tamara had a little welcoming words for us which was nice :)

Langa is a township and suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. It was established in 1927 in terms of the 1923 Urban Areas Act. Similar to Nyanga, Langa is one of the many areas in South Africa that were designated for Black Africans before the apartheid era.

Some interesting history and facts about townships in the Cape include the following:
• The former residential area of District Six is one of the most famous Apartheid areas -- once a thriving neighbourhood, the area was abandoned when the Apartheid government conducted forced removals of up to 60, 000 people in the 1970s. The District Six Museum offers a colourful history into the area as it once was, as well as the Apartheid years and the area's downfall, and is a popular highlight of townships tours in Cape Town.
• Kayalitsha is the fastest growing township in the Cape, and is located on the Cape Flats along the N2 highway. The name is Xhosa for 'New Home', which was derived during its formation in the Apartheid years. Established in 1985, many residents from District Six and other areas were forcibly removed by the government and relocated to this township. Today, Kayalitsha has around has an estimated population of 406,779 residents.
• Langa is another of Cape Town's thriving townships, and was also formed in the Apartheid days after thousands of residents from other areas were forcibly relocated. The area was named after Langalibalele - a chief and renowned rainmaker who was imprisoned on Robben Island in 1873 for rebelling against the Natal government. One of the highlights on this township tour is a visit to one of the area's famous charismatic churches -- something that is sure to leave you enthralled!
Despite the tragic and often troubled history of Cape Town's townships and informal settlements, the areas still retain a strong sense of culture, with a vibrant community atmosphere and plenty of food, entertainment and enterprise. Many community arts projects can be found along the townships, with crafts such as beading, weaving, wire goods and fabric making all to be found. The ever-present local shabeens offer another side to life -- with South African beer, braais and a strong sense of community to be enjoyed. Township tours are sure to leave you with a better understanding of Cape Town's history and cultures, making these not to be missed.

Township Langa near Cape Town. Civiwe takes care of childeren and youngsters on Sundays. During week they go to school. But on Sunday there's no school, means also no food. Civiwe gives them food and teach them how to dance and sing. Without any money they have to be inventive and creative. So gum boots are there instruments!!!
