Toyama - Japan || Toyama City and around
“Toyama” means “rich with mountains”, and the name doesn’t disappoint! The city offers stunning views of a series of 3,000 meter peaks belonging to the Northern Japan Alps. Located on the picturesque Japan Sea, only 250km northwest of Tokyo (just over two hours by Shinkansen), you will be amazed by the perfect scenery and dynamic landscape. Historically, Toyama was a powerful castle town and today this thriving high tech city still offers visitors splendid ancient festivals and neighborhoods with traditional 19th century wooden buildings, together with ultra-modern trams that crisscross beautiful downtown rivers and canals, and the largest community of glass artists in Japan. With some of the most famous sashimi and sushi in Japan, award winning pure water, spectacular mountain trekking, remarkable museums, and easy access, eco-friendly Toyama really has it all! Come and experience the real Japan!

Peter Ivy: Where I Was, Where I'm At, What I've Done @ Harbourfront Centre
In November, 2012, Peter Ivy presented a lecture and workshop as part of the Craft Department at Harbourfront Centre's annual Innovators + Ideas Series. The lecture was presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Homecus Domesticus, which ran from September 29 to December 23, 2012. Peter was introduced by Melanie Egan, the Head of the Craft Department and curator of the exhibition. The lecture, originally presented on November 1, 2012 at the Studio Theatre in Toronto, including the introduction, has be reproduced in this video.
Originally from Austin Texas, Peter Ivy moved to Rhode Island at age 20, where he received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. In the following years he apprenticed in the Seattle area and was fortunate enough to work with prominent makers such as David Levi, Dante Marioni, Josiah McElheny, and about 10 other studios. In 1998 he returned to the Boston area to teach at R.I.S.D. and Massachusetts College of Art. Interested in exploring new interests, he then moved to Japan where he became an Associate Professor at Aichi University of Education as the Head of the Glass program. Currently located in Toyama, Japan, Peter is concentrating on making wares for daily use in his own studio Ryudou Kenkyusho which roughly translates as Flow Laboratory.
Many thanks to Peter Ivy for allowing the Glass Art Association of Canada to reproduce his lecture through the use of his photographs. Thanks also to Harbourfront Centre, and in particular Melanie Egan for hosting the lecture and accompanying workshop and for the use of the audio of Peter's lecture, which was recorded November 1, 2012. This video was produced by Brad Copping for Contemporary Canadian Glass, the Glass Art Association of Canada's online magazine in January 2013.
