SUMMARY
=======
Oregon ( (listen) OR-i-gən) is a state in the Pacific Northwest region on the West Coast of the United States. The Columbia River delineates much of Oregon's northern boundary along Washington state, while the Snake River delineates much of its eastern boundary along Idaho. The parallel 42° north delineates the southern boundary with California and Nevada. Oregon is one of only three states of the contiguous United States to have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean.
Oregon was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before Western traders, explorers, and settlers arrived. An autonomous government was formed in the Oregon Country in 1843 before the Oregon Territory was created in 1848. Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. Today, at 98,000 square miles (250,000 km2), Oregon is the ninth largest and, with a population of 4 million, 27th most populous U.S. state. The capital, Salem, is the second most populous city in Oregon, with 164,549 residents. Portland, with 632,309 residents, is the most populous and ranks as the 26th most populous city in the United States. The Portland metropolitan area, which also includes the city of Vancouver, Washington, to the north, ranks the 23rd largest metro area in the nation, with a population of 2,389,228.
Oregon is one of the most geographically diverse states in the U.S., marked by volcanoes, abundant bodies of water, dense evergreen and mixed forests, as well as high deserts and semi-arid shrublands. At 11,249 feet (3,429 m), Mount Hood, a stratovolcano, is the state's highest point. Oregon's only national park, Crater Lake National Park, comprises the caldera surrounding Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the United States. The state is also home to the single largest organism in the world, Armillaria ostoyae, a fungus that runs beneath 2,200 acres (8.9 km2) of the Malheur National Forest.Because of its diverse landscapes and waterways, Oregon's economy is largely powered by various forms of agriculture, fishing, and hydroelectric power. Oregon is also the top timber producer of the contiguous United States, and the timber industry dominated the state's economy in the 20th century. Technology is another one of Oregon's major economic forces, beginning in the 1970s with the establishment of the Silicon Forest and the expansion of Tektronix and Intel. Sportswear company Nike, Inc., headquartered in Beaverton, is the state's largest public corporation with an annual revenue of $30.6 billion.Like its northern neighbor Washington, Oregon is one of the most socially progressive states in the country. Same-sex marriage in Oregon was recognized in 2013 before its full legalization in 2015, cannabis is legal for recreational and medicinal use in the state, and assisted suicide is also permitted by law in Oregon.

SUMMARY
=======
Manchukuo (traditional Chinese: 滿洲國; pinyin: Mǎnzhōuguó; Japanese: 満州国; rōmaji: Manshūkoku; State of Manchuria; in other Axis languages: Italian: Manciukuò and German: Mandschukuo) was a puppet state of the Empire of Japan in Northeast China and Inner Mongolia from 1932 until 1945. It was founded as a republic, but in 1934 it became a constitutional monarchy. It had limited international recognition and was under the de facto control of Japan.
The area, collectively known as Manchuria, was the homeland of the Manchus, including the emperors of the Qing dynasty. In 1931, the region was seized by Japan following the Mukden Incident and a pro-Japanese government was installed one year later with Puyi, the last Qing emperor, as the nominal regent and later emperor. Manchukuo's government was dissolved in 1945 after the surrender of Imperial Japan at the end of World War II. The territories formally claimed by the puppet state were first seized in the Soviet invasion of Manchuria in August 1945, and then formally transferred to Chinese administration in the following year.Manchus formed a minority in Manchukuo, whose largest ethnic group were Han Chinese. The population of Koreans increased during the Manchukuo period, and there were also Japanese, Mongols, White Army Russians and other minorities. The Mongol regions of western Manchukuo were ruled under a slightly different system in acknowledgement of the Mongolian traditions there. The southern part of the Liaodong Peninsula was ruled by Japan as the Kwantung Leased Territory.

SUMMARY
=======

2016 AAA Invited Session: LESSONS FOR CARE IN THE ANTHROPOCENE
This roundtable brings together scholars attending to the intersections of ecosystemic change, human fear and fallacy, and the dignity of human efforts in envisioning and enacting a livable future. We frame these efforts, especially with regards to understanding the ecological crises of the anthropocene, in terms of an ethics of care. We play with the new modes of interaction, relationship, and healing that the concept and practice of care can afford us—as scholars, as activists, and as individuals whose survival depends on the health of a planet deeply marked by human presence. This historical moment is marked both by climate change and by cyclical re-assessments of “rational scientific knowledge” and “rediscoveries” of “indigenous knowledges,” engaging particular practices of attention to (and, we suggest, care for) ecologies. This session proposes that care, and practices engaging an ethics of care, are central to understanding the possibilities for eco-social futures in which humans and others thrive together. Feminist geography and medical anthropology’s ‘ethics of care’ offers productive way of rethinking and recrafting relations among humans and others. We draw anthropological theories of local and partial knowledges into conversation with critical geography which attends to everyday life and its modes of care. We turn also to contemporary work which moves towards decolonizing knowledge and practice in order to attend to our interlocutors’ efforts. When used to ground research about, and work for coping with, the eco-social changes imminent in the anthropocene, we suggest that care as a method and a mode of attention can create the conditions for the necessary dimensions of humanity, intimacy, attention and relationship needed to cultivate justice for the present and the future. Our research dwells in spaces of care and spaces of disenfranchisement, and considers the relationship between the two realms. Rosario is working to launch a research and living center where experiments in care are brought to bear on healing and social justice initiatives in Puerto Rico. Smith considers the ways that indigenous worlds are erased and reframed across particular landscapes of experience in Maine, attending to indigenous peoples’ practices for healing wounds from these erasures. Dalferro follows silk from cocoon in Thailand to retail in the United States, calling our attention to different intimacies of care for a silkworm and its tree, a loom and its weaver, a global market flow. The frictions emergent in these moments engage our scholarly and activist attention, and help us to frame this roundtable discussion. We ask what objects and beings call out for caring attention? How do we read the ways in which the right kinds of care--for human bodies, for ecologies--are being produced, negotiated, and practiced? And what kinds of evidence are necessary in order to trace the ways that we and our interlocutors practice care for a changing world? We draw one another and the audience into dialogue as we consider what kinds of care are necessary for an anthropocene.
