Toyota Motor Manufacturing Visitors Center
There’s a buzz flying through the air at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, Inc. (TMMTX). No, we’re not talking about flying trucks, rather the new pollinator garden and completely overhauled Visitors Center exhibits at the San Antonio facility. Today, company executives, team members and community leaders joined to celebrate completion of the more than $1 million project.
“This top-to-bottom remodel of our Visitors Center will provide an interactive look at what we do here at TMMTX,” said David Crouch, vice president, TMMTX. “Guests will get hands-on experience with exhibits such as a paint simulator that tests their painting skills, and how to spot defects when they step into the quality area. We hope to inspire our next generation to learn more about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and skilled labor jobs.”
Other exhibits also give visitors a taste of what it takes to be a team member, or an “industrial athlete,” as Toyota calls its team members. This includes a rope-game competition that showcases fundamental skills needed, operating a lift assist to pick up a truck seat, and a penny press to model the stamping process and provides a souvenir.
In addition, guests will get up close to an automated-guided vehicle, as well as see several historic and one-of-a-kind Toyota trucks including a 1969 Land Cruiser, 1971 Hi-Lux and the Back to the Future Tacoma.
Promoting Pollinators
Just outside the Visitors Center sits the new 11,000 sq. ft. pollinator garden. TMMTX's environmental team worked with Texas Parks and Wildlife and the San Antonio Zoo to fill the garden with 250 native plants that will attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other insects.
“We want people to know that planting just one plant that pollinators enjoy helps,” said Rob Franklin, environmental director, TMMTX. This garden is part of our commitment to protecting biodiversity and supporting local species, here in Texas and at our facilities across North America.”
Pollinators are crucial because they feed from flowers and transfer pollen which allows flowers and plants to produce seeds, fruits and vegetables. Approximately one out of every three bites of food you eat depends on the work of a pollinator. Unfortunately, pesticide usage and other factors harm pollinators.
Aside from planting native flowering plants, such as milkweed, in support of pollinators, people can install houses for bats and bees, supply salt or mineral licks for butterflies and water for all wildlife, and reduce pesticide use.
TMMTX leaders also announced they’ll partner with the San Antonio Zoo to plant pollinator gardens at six local high schools. Those schools will also be provided educational resources and programming for students to learn about the importance of pollinators in our environment.

Tokugawa Art Museum
During the Edo Period (1600-1868), Nagoya served as the seat of the Owari, one of the three major branches of the ruling Tokugawa family. Regarding the great wealth the family amassed, there were only four feudal domains that surpassed out of 200 of the Edo Period. The Tokugawa Art Museum was built on the grounds of the Owari's former feudal residence and preserves and displays several of their treasures including swords and samurai armor and tea utensils, noh masks and costumes, poems, scrolls and maps.
There is a beautiful Japanese landscape garden called Tokugawa-en next to the museum, that has a large pond at its center. The garden used to be part of a retirement residence of the local lords, but was ruined during the war. In 2001 the garden was rebuilt and reopened to the public in 2004. A large network of walking trails lead around the grounds to a tea house, rest houses, and across several bridges. The best season to visit the garden is during spring, when its Peony (mid to late April) and Iris gardens (late May to early June) bloom, and during the autumn season (November).
Access information
The museum is a ten minute walk from Ozone Station on the JR Chuo, Meijo Subway, and the Meitetsu Seto Line. JR Chuo Line is frequently operated to directly connect between Ozone Station and Nagoya Station (12 minutes, 200 yen one way).
In addition, to get to the museum, the Meguru loop bus line for tourists can be used, and from Nagoya Station it takes about 40 minutes or from Nagoya Castle it takes about 15 minutes. The fare is 200 yen per ride or 500 yen for a day pass.

Japan Travel: Matsumae Castle Matsumaehan Yashiki History museum Hokkaido57
Matsumae (松前) is a former castle town just west of Cape Shirakami(白神岬),which is the southernmost point of Hokkaido. There is only 20 kilometers across the Tsugaru Strait from Aomori. Matsumae was the northern limit of Japan during the Edo Period and the sole feudal fief on the otherwise wild, untamed frontier of Hokkaido. The thriving, 30,000 person town attracted merchants engaged in the shipping trade, and was protected by a garrison at Matsumae Castle, which was the only Japanese style castle to have been built on Hokkaido.
Built on a hillside advantage point, Matsumae Castle cemented a foothold on Hokkaido from where to use the island's abundant natural resources. Toward the end of the Edo Period, the castle was equipped with cannon to counter the threat of foreign ships. As with many Japanese castles, Matsumae Castle's original keep was destroyed some times over the centuries. The current three story high structure is a modern concrete reconstruction from the early 1960s which houses a local history museum displaying a collection of artifacts of the local Matsumae clan, including some items related to the Ainu people.

There are 14 buildings including merchant houses, a magistrates office, a guard station and a shipping agent. Some of the buildings can be entered and display life sized mannequins. Visitors can also rent period costume to wear(with a small cost) while exploring the town.
