Toyota Indiana Assembly Line for Highlander, Sequoia
New Videos Every Day - Subscribe:
When long-time team members Sandra and Andres Chaparro saw the first vehicle roll off the line in 1998, they felt a sense of pride and accomplishment knowing they’d had a hand building it. Little did they know; their hands would be busy building 4,999,999 more vehicles over the next 20 years.
“It’s really seems like yesterday we opened the plant and started our journey with Toyota,” the Chaparros said. “After 20 years—and 5 million vehicles—Toyota has really become our second family. Having a reliable career with a company that cares about us as team members and offers opportunity for growth has been so important to us both and to our family. We’re so proud to have been a part of these 5 million cars and all of TMMI’s successes.”
There’s no question, the 5-millionth vehicle—a Toyota Sequoia Platinum—is a direct result of the plant’s world-class workforce. Growing to more than 5,300 team members over the past 21 years, Toyota Indiana is driving into the future with a strong presence in the industry and in its local communities with a total plant investment of $4.3 billion and new growth on the horizon.
“This milestone is a great testament to the men and women at Toyota Indiana, said plant president Millie Marshall. “Our team members have met every challenge and continue to build incredible vehicles for our customers in a safe and efficient way.”
With 5 million vehicles in its repertoire, there has to be a secret of success, right? Aside from its dedication to quality, safety and a solid commitment to its team members, Toyota Indiana also attributes its success to the support from various community partners and elected officials.
“For more than 20 years, we’ve watched Toyota grow in Indiana—providing good jobs for Hoosiers, training future leaders, and giving back to the community,” Gov. Eric J. Holcomb said. “Today we celebrate the company’s continued success, commitment to our state, and the 5 millionth vehicle produced by Hoosiers. We look forward to witnessing Toyota’s next milestone here in Indiana.”
And while building vehicles is the lifeblood for the plant, building partnerships in its communities is just as important. To commemorate the many years of success, Toyota Indiana awarded five local nonprofits with a surprise donation of $15,000 each promoting initiatives ranging from workforce development to youth safety, and several STEM education programs, all of which will help further the plant’s mission to build more than great cars.

Toyota Highlander Production At Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana
Schellinger: Toyota Move 'Huge' For Indiana
The Indiana Secretary of Commerce says Tuesday's announcement of Toyota's $600 million investment into its Princeton plant speaks to the faith the company has in Indiana and how much it values the state's work force. Jim Schellinger says it will take a regional effort to fill the 400 jobs that will be added by 2019 with work being done through the Regional Cities Initiative helping to attract top talent.
Toyota President Says Indiana 'Global Choice'
During an interview with Inside INdiana Business, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana President Millie Marshall says Toyota's decision to invest $600 million in its Princeton, IN plant was based in large part on the state's workforce.
Production of the 2020 Toyota Highlander SUV in Indiana
Indiana's prosperous manufacturing environment goes hand-in-hand with Toyota's growth in the state, Gov. Eric Holcomb said.
Three years after announcing a $600 million expansion and 400 new jobs in Princeton, Toyota officials on Friday said the plant is being modernized again, this time with a $700 million investment and 150 more jobs.
It's all because of the Highlander. The midsize SUV rolls off Toyota's Princeton assembly line at the rate of 265,592 units per year, and with the investment and new employment announced Friday, the total will reach 420,000.
Holcomb, who has been at multiple previous major announcements at Toyota's Princeton plant, pointed to the ripple effect the company's growth has had.
There's a lot of momentum. Every day, we pick up more speed, and it's been earned, Holcomb said. Toyota has become this rising tide that lifts all boats. Think about the long supply chain, this is a great day for them as well, to be able to meet the consumer demand, and do it right here in Southwest Indiana.
Toyota's workforce in Princeton exceeds 7,000. The plant also produces the Highlander Hybrid, the Sienna minivan and the Sequoia full-size utility vehicle. Friday's announcement was accompanied by news that Sequoia production will leave Princeton for San Antonio, Texas, in 2022.
This realignment will not mean the subtraction of any jobs, according to company officials.
They said Friday's news is all about the continued popularity of the Highlander.
The 2020 model made its official debut during Friday's splashy announcement in the newly-christened Toyota Experience Center (formerly the Visitors Center). The vehicle's starting price is $34,600, according to toyota.com.
“We need as many Highlanders as we can make,” said Chris Reynolds, chief operating officer for manufacturing and corporate resources for Toyota North America. “Customers love them, and we need to make more of them.”
Toyota team members produce vehicles on two daily shifts. In 2019, more than 57,000 vehicles from Princeton were exported to 17 countries.
The plant covers 1,160 acres. With 4.5 million square feet, it has the space of about 80 football fields under roof. Its annual payroll is about $456 million.
Deanna Tackett graduated from Gibson Southern High School before studying aviation at Purdue University. After several years away, she returned to Gibson County 17 years ago to work at Toyota, and today, she's senior manager of quality.
Tackett said team members at Toyota are involved in not only producing the plant's vehicles but also coming up with new technologies to improve them. She said one feature of the 2020 Highlander customers will enjoy is the heads-up display.

Governor Holcomb Reacts to Toyota's $600M Princeton Investment
The parent of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana Inc. is planning one of the largest private-sector expansions in state history. The company is pumping $600 million into the 20-year-old Princeton plant and could add 400 employees by 2019. TMMI says the expansion and modernization will help meet strong and growing demand for its mid-size Highlander SUV model. The announcement comes on the heels of a record production year for Toyota Motor North America and is part of a planned $10 billion investment into U.S. operations by Japan-based Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) over the next five years.
Governor Eric Holcomb was on hand for the announcement in Princeton and weighs in on the Toyota investment and its impact on the state of Indiana in an interview with Inside INdiana Business reporter Mary-Rachel Redman.
Toyota Motor to generate 400 jobs at Indiana assembly plant
Toyota Motor on Tuesday stated it would add 400 jobs to develop more SUVs at one of its U.S. plants, highlighting its growth plans just as U.S. President Donald Trump gets in touch with automakers to construct more cars in the country.
The Japanese automaker stated the jobs became part of a $600 million upgrade of its plant located in Princeton, Indiana, and were consisted in its plans announced earlier this month to invest $10 billion in its U.S. operations over the next 5 years.
The announcement comes as Trump concentrates on protectionist trade policies throughout his administrations’ first week, including an official withdrawal of the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal on Monday.
The president has formerly favored a 35 percent tariff on imported vehicles and vowed to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Mexico and Canada to encourage a “buy American and hire American” policy.
He has targeted automakers including Toyota Motor for producing vehicles in Mexico for export to the United States and on Tuesday also had breakfast with the CEOs of General Motors, Ford Motor and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to talk about increasing U.S. employment.
Toyota in 2016 produced around 1.4 million automobiles in the United States, its largest market. It runs 10 factories in the nation, including the plant located in Indiana which new Vice President Mike Pence checked out while he was state governor.
The automaker also runs a pickup assembly plant located in Mexico, and is building a 2nd site in the nation, where it prepares to develop the Corolla sedan.
