Join Your Union!
In this video, we find Joe at Victorian Trades Hall, Melbourne, basking in the history of the world's oldest trades hall (1854) and lamenting the destruction here in Australia of a vital democratic institution for working people - our trade unions. Ever since Hawke's 'Accord' with trade unions around 30 years ago we have witnessed ever-increasing draconian laws passed about unions, such as the abolition of awards, the establishment of the Fair Work Commission, and no general right to strike powers. However, unions are as important for working people as they have always been, being a flexing of our collective bargaining power muscle. Some of the most successful unions in Australia have close to 100% membership and these include the police and firefighters unions. Joe calls for a more active, militant role for unions in Australia today in a time of wage stagnation and work precarity. So join your union and get involved!
P.S. We also get to learn something of long-time Melbourne feminist and anarchist Zelda D'Aprano (1928 - 2018). She was great.
Occupy Melbourne Interviews - Jacob Grech (Trades Hall Caretaker)
Interview brought to you by
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trades Hall Caretaker Jacob Grech (A supporter of the Occupy movement) gives his opinions of the issues which are facing Australians and the world. He gives some critique of the ways Occupy Melbourne began to act as they moved along, talks about how things have changed with OM over time and what he hopes will happen now.
He gives his view of what the issues that the Occupy protests around the world are protesting about - how Australians' rights are being taken away systematically - how Indigenous people are under a system of apartheid - and what he hopes Australians do about it.
He gives an opinion of why the City Square eviction happened, and what it means for the future of activism in Australia and why he believes its happening and is just a prelude of what's to come. He gives a view of the change in how activism works in the Information Age and how that has caused a change in how authorities treat activist movements.
He follows up with what he hopes comes out of the Occupy movement around the world, mentions how he's seen changes in the occupiers and what this means, and finishes with a hopeful message to those who are critical and haven't occupied yet.
