SYND 30 7 78 ANNUAL SARDINE FEVER AT TRAFALGAR BEACH
(29 Jul 1978) `Sardine fever' has hit again this year along the Natal coastline of South Africa as millions of the little fish have been driven ashore. UPITN went to Trafalgar beach, 90 miles south of Durban on Saturday (July 29th) to investigate.
The beaches are tourist-free at this time of year and the locals go mad as the silver treasure can spark off the worst symptons of `sardine fever'. Anything that can hold sardines will do and the salty bonanza can mean a fortune for professional fishermen. The sardine variety involved is not a gourmet's delight but they are much sought after by big game fishermen for bait. They'll pay plenty for a few sardines that may tempt a big fighting fish onto the line
