Trafalgar Holden Museum
A trip to Gippsland should ALWAYS include a detour to the Trafalgar Holden Museum. Each generation of Holden is shown, some in multiple trim levels. Business Sedan, Station Sedan, Special, Premier, Belmont, Kingswood, Statesman, Monaro. And along with the magnificent car collection are other products manufactured by Holden, including armaments, boats and kitchen appliances. Of course there are saddles too, and other items from Australia's pioneering heritage. Neil Joiner is a wealth of knowledge and a better host would be hard to find. You will thoroughly enjoy yourself - but be warned - one trip is not enough!

Trafalgar Holden Museum Victoria - On the Road to Tasmania - Part 1
On the Road to the Tasmanian Monaro Nationals - Part 1.
We drop into the Trafalgar Holden Museum.
Established in October 2014 by a local car / Holden enthusiast, most collectors would adjust their ambitions to suit what they can squeeze in their garage, Neil did not let the space factor get in the way of his collection.
Instead, he bought an old factory (which happens to be Trafalgar’s old butter factory from the 1930’s era) to store and grow his much loved collection.
The Trafalgar Holden Museum has many unique features and displays including some of Neil’s prized possessions; his 1965 Holden HD Premier with 13,000 miles (21,000km) on it, a 1967 Holden HK also with 13,000 miles and an 1963 EJ Holden with just 7500 miles (12,000km). Along with a theatrette and interactive displays, it truly is a must do for everyone!
Come along and meet the friendly staff and take an amazing trip back through the journey of Australia’s classic Holden history!

The Hillsborough Holden Museum in New Zealand: Classic Restos - Series 37
In the North Island of New Zealand at New Plymouth Fletch visits the massive Hillsborough Holden Museum and talks with owners and creators Steve and Joy Fabish.
Steve began the collection after completing a nut and bolt restoration of a 1977 HX Holden GTS Monaro that has pride of place in the collection today. Their collection has grown over 22 years and created the need to build a purpose-built, state of the art museum facility.
Today the collection of Holdens is massive, and Fletch talks with Steve about some of the vehicles on display. First up is a 1972 HQ Ute, then a 1949 FX Holden the oldest registered Holden in New Zealand, a1980 HZ Ute fully restored with a couple of later model additions. Then a couple of iconic Holden classics, a 1953 48/215 sedan purchased from Orange in NSW, still in immaculate condition that it was purchased in with only 80,000 miles on the clock, and finally a 1964 EH Holden Sedan in original condition, this car was called 'Australia's own car' and sold in excess of 250,000 vehicles back then.
Holden New Zealand and GM International have recognised the efforts of Steve & Joy Fabish and their Hillsborough Museum and donated the latest model Holden to add their museum display, a V6 VXR Commodore.
Fletch suggests that this museum is a must see if you are visiting New Zealand.

Iconic Australian Dick Smith: Classic Restos - Series 38
This week Fletch strays from his regular Classic Restos format and chats with the iconic and much loved Australian Dick Smith. He talks about his early business days as a 2-way radio manufacturer and car radio installer of famous Australian-made brands such as Astor, Krysler and HMV. Then the transition from car radio installer to the launch of Dick Smith Electronics that he sold after 8 years to Woolworths for $20 million.
Along the way he is credited with creating the Variety Bash, a novel fundraising concept that he based on the REDEX trials and his hero Gelignite Jack Murray, an idea that today has been adopted around the world. Dick explains it was a way of getting some wealthy people to donate to charity without been seen as a do-gooder. With some unique rules that allowed bribing and cheating to be allowed to raise more funds for Charity.
Dick thinks he is a car enthusiast, maybe not as committed as some, but he fondly recalls a list of his cars over the years. Starting with a Morris Minor that he purchased for 400 pounds, and ran his 2-way & car radio installation business out of, a FC Panel Van, EH Holden, then a step up to a Fairlane V8, a V6 Ford Capri, a Brock Commodore - that was a favourite, especially after experiencing a Hot Lap with Peter Brock. Today he has electric cars, a Nissan Leaf for getting around town and aTesla.
Dick Smith's story wouldn't be complete without referencing some of his aerial exploits including 5 helicopter flights around the world including 1 solo flight, two of these adventures were before the introduction of GPS that makes them quite astonishing, along with some of his exploits along the way.

60th Anniversary of the FC Holden: Classic Restos - Series 37
This episode of Classic Restos is devoted to the 60th Anniversary of the FC Holden and follows a cavalcade organised by the FE/FC Holden Car Club of Victoria from the original Holden plant in Dandenong South to the Holden Museum in Trafalgar in South East Gippsland.
Fletch details the history of the FC Holden with some amazing stats around the production and sales back then for this now iconic vehicle. Holden Design Director - Richard Ferlazzo talks about the design evolution of the Holden in the past and into the future and applauds clubs like the FE/FC Holden Car Club of Victoria for keeping Australia's motoring history alive.
Owners display their beautifully restored Holdens, Ray with a 1957 FE Holden, Chris with her 1958 FC Wagon a daily drive even today and finally Trevor proudly shows off his 1958 FC Holden Station Sedan.
Holden 48/215 - The First All Australian Car
Put this on your bucket list. The Trafalgar Holden Motor Museum. Even Ford fans are catered for, with an original Model-T (although the body was built by Holden). From saddles, boats, armaments and kitchen appliances, this museum has everything Holden. Neil Joiner, curator, is an absolute gem and wealth of knowledge. While Australian history is somewhat short in length, this museum will make you proud to be an Aussie, and see just how ingenious our forefathers were. My first interview with Neil had to start with the Holden 48/215 - the original but perhaps not the best.
