Nelson to Motueka on Tasman's Great Taste Trail
We biked our way from the heart of Nelson to Motueka (and back to Tasman to pick up our car) along the Great Taste Trail.
We stopped in Mapua for lunch and coffee - as well as loading our backpacks with some amazing produce we brought from roadside stalls.
Mt Arthur-Tablelands, Kahurangi, Nelson, New Zealand
A short film about the Mount Arthur Tablelands tramp, Kahurangi National Park, Nelson, New Zealand. Visit
I took two days hiking first from Flora carpark up to Salisbury Hut, then across the Tablelands plateau and up to the summit of Mt. Arthur. I had planned to spend the second night at the Mt. Arthur hut, but it is quite small and it was quite full. Sailsbury Hutt is larger and seems to be less used.
Although I had rain, the weather cleared up when I got to the summit of Mount Arthur. From there you get excellent views all across the Kahurangi National Park.
In parts of the trek there isn't much water, so take this with you.

30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
This morning we drive into Nelson in New Zealand for a day of city touring. After doing a bit of shopping for our supplies at Torpedo7, we borrow some bikes from the Tasman Bay Backpackers and start exploring Nelson City.
First, we check out Trafalgar Square and the Jens Hansen – The Ringmaker jewellers where The One Ring from the Lord of the Rings was made. We get some movie insights by visiting Jen Hansen in Nelson. Then just across the road is The Bead Gallery, a cool and quirky bead shop in Nelson.
We cycle through Queen’s Gardens in Nelson City full of water features, bridges and gardens on our way to the Botanical Reserve. The Botanical Reserve has a number of bush walks including one that goes to the Centre of New Zealand.
The Centre of New Zealand has some awesome views of Nelson City and the surrounding hills. Then it’s back on our bikes and return to the Tasman Bay Backpackers.
So what do you think of Nelson City? Would you stay in Nelson City as part of your New Zealand trip?

Visit the Spooners Tunnel Cycle Trail
What is now The Spooners Tunnel Cycle Trail was once a railroad tunnel throughout the Spooners Range from the 1890's. This railway tunnel was left unused for 60 years and is now re-opened up to cyclists and walkers to enjoy.
It's 1.35km in length, it is the Southern Hemisphere’s longest tunnel used exclusively by cyclists and walkers.
It’s all one straight line, so if you cycle south to north, the gentle downward slope will allow you to freewheel the entire distance. And even better, at the end of your ride is the beautiful Belgrove Tavern for refreshments and eats.
The tunnel originally opened in 1893, and was dug by hand with two groups of men at each end working to meet in the middle. It was originally intended to connect Nelson to the West Coast, but it only got to Gowanbridge before the Government of that time pulled the pin. Despite significant protest, in 1955 the tracks were pulled up and the tunnel was boarded shut.
For safety reasons, do not park at the weigh station opposite The Belgrove. Park at the Belgrove Tavern car park on State Highway 6 (Wakefield-Kohatu Highway) from 10am.
Please remember the tunnel is not lit, so bike lights and a torch are essential.
It's a GREAT experience and it’s FREE.

Helena Bay Lodge - Discover
helenabay.com
On the Helena Bay Estate there is a wide variety of activities available. For those who wish to relax, lounging around the pool interspersed with fossicking in the seawater rock pools adjacent to the Lodge is a great way to while-away a pleasant day. A newly-laid Astroturf tennis court is adjacent to the Lodge. Trails for hiking and biking have been cut through the bush and down to the private beaches on the property. The Lodge has the latest Trek mountain bikes (two with electric motors). When exploring the farm you will meet the alpacas, donkeys and Wagyu cattle (all behind fences!).
The long-term view of the owners of Helena Bay Lodge has allowed substantial investment to be made in the property. A comprehensive pest and predator management program has been introduced, with fantastic results. The native trees spread across the property that had been ravaged by possums have seen a significant rejuvenation. The introduction of new breeding ponds for the endangered pateke (brown teal) duck have proven very successful, with a number of breeding pairs making their home here.
For those who enjoy being on the water, we are on hand to launch the paddle boards and sea kayaks. We also have fishing tackle available for guests to fish from the pontoon or one of the beaches. Using our electric four-wheel-drive buggies, with a gourmet picnic on board, is a great way to explore the property.
