Hiking Haunted Canyon
Haunted Canyon, Arizona....hard to get to, remote wildnerness, wooded and beautiful. Legends of Apache hauntings in the woods. Drive through an active, steep, mine road to find trailhead. Part of Tonto Nat'l Forest. A few funny things happened along the trail and roads through the area.
Hiking from Spur Cross to Cottonwood Spring, AZ
Hiking from the Spur Cross trailhead, four miles north of Cave Creek (the city), on FR 48 along Cave Creek (the dry river), then east on Cottonwood Trail #247 to Cottonwood Spring. I took Trail #247A out of the spring, but the trail soon disappeared, and I had to start bushwhacking. Found some crested saguaros though! Great views of Elephant Mountain, Sugarloaf Mountain, New River Mesa, Skull Mesa and Continental Mountain. If you hike to Cottonwood Spring, I recommend heading back on Cottonwood Trail #247. Places to see in ( Scottsdale - USA )
Places to see in ( Scottsdale - USA )
Scottsdale is a desert city in Arizona east of state capital Phoenix. It's known for its spa resorts and golf courses, including TPC Scottsdale. Farther north, trails wind through McDowell Sonoran Preserve, a desertscape of hills, rock formations and cacti. Nearby is Taliesin West, architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s former home and studio. Downtown's Old Town Scottsdale has 1920s buildings and 19th-century olive trees.
Scottsdale is home to many galleries, high quality resorts, and golf courses. It is also one of the wealthier parts of the Phoenix Metro Area. High end shopping destinations are one of the primary attractions of the city. For example, the Fashion Square Mall is near downtown Scottsdale and is one of the biggest malls in the United States. The extensive galleries to the west of the downtown also offer upscale shopping and strolling. The galleries in this area display works both from local artists and from around the world.
The Old Town section of Scottsdale is to the east of the gallery district. It showcases swanky upscale style as well as a caricature of the gruff American West. Well over half the shops are gift shops. However, it is fun enough for a browse in a Disneyland sort of way.
Both Old Town and Downtown Scottsdale possess an dazing array of bars, nightclubs, pool clubs and chic eateries. Nicknamed the Beverly Hills of the Desert, Scottsdale is second to none in terms of opportunity for high-end debauchery.
The valley of the sun has over 130 miles of canals. Most of them were built in the last 100 years to provide water for the irrigation of farm land. However, now that the valley is much less agrarian the canals are primarily used to carry away storm water. Some are also used to generate hydroelectric power.
These often overlooked gems are open to the public. One can take in the beautiful desert scenery and fresh air while strolling along them. They provide walkers, joggers, and bikers with a nice refuge from traffic. But don't try swimming in the canals, aside from being an obvious bad idea because the sides are so steep it is also illegal, along with motorized vehicles.

This video has been created from photographs I took while hiking Haunted Canyon, an obscure Superstition Wilderness trail immersed in myth and legend.
Facts, trivia and directions for Haunted Canyon are towards the end of the video.
Haunted Canyon inspired me to write an article entitled Haunted Canyon: Rejuvenation of Body, Mind and Spirit, which was published along with a few of these photographs in The Crow's Nest on-line magazine summer, 2007 edition.
Thank you very much for watching and I hope you enjoy!
Hiking Arizona's Quien Sabe Peak, Seven Springs, AZ
Hiking from Seven Springs, in Arizona's Tonto National Forest, through the Cave Creek Complex Fire burn area, along Cave Creek Trail #4, Skunk Tank Trail #246 and Quien Sabe Trail #250 to the summit of the mesa known as Quien Sabe Peak. Fantastic 360° views of Skull Mesa, Elephant Mountain, the city of Cave Creek, Black Mountain, Four Peaks, and other mountains I don't recognize.

Arizona Trail I
Arizona is one of the few states in the country that has a “border to border” trail that provides users with opportunities to see diverse habitats such as deserts, grasslands, pine forests and the Grand Canyon. The Arizona National Scenic Trail runs more than 800 miles from the border with Mexico to Utah state line, and it’s open to pedestrians, mountain bikers and equestrians. It was the dream of Dale Shewalter, a Flagstaff teacher who worked on the concept and project for years.

Hiking Limestone Trail #252, Spur Cross, AZ
Limestone Trail #252, between Cave Creek and Elephant Mountain was the highlight of a loop that also included Metate Trail, the Solar Oasis, Towhee Trail, FR 48, Elephant Mountain Trail, Tortuga Trail and -- deep breath! -- Spur Cross Trail. The loop lies partly Maricopa County's Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, partly in the Tonto National Forest. Limestone Spring box was full of water and bees; Page Spring box was a sandbox. Lots of flowers and great views of Sugarloaf Mountain. Blog, links & music:

Superstition Mountains-Reavis Ranch
Sorry. Few clips of the ranch in this video. I was a pretty lazy videographer on this trip. More obsessed with chillin' under shady trees and doing absolutely nothing. Nice video of the trail, however.

Trying to make it up Indian Creek, Chiricahua Mountains, southeastern Arizona
Day 8 of the first leg of our Mexico-to-Canada horse pack trip. We were trying to make it up Indian Creek from Whitetail Canyon, but the trail had been washed out. We made it about 3 miles up the canyon before having to turn around and head back out. The trail ended up becoming impassable for horses about 1000' before the canyon opens up where the trailhead we were trying to reach is. It was a rough ride, but I was sure proud of my Missouri Fox Trotter, who kept right up with a mule that I'm pretty sure was half-mountain goat!

Turkey Creek Cliff Dwelling, Aravaipa Canyon, AZ
The Turkey Creek cliff dwelling is a c. 14th Century Salado adobe structure just over a mile south of the east end of Aravaipa Canyon, in Arizona's Graham County. High clearance vehicles can drive up to the base of the small cliff, or you can hike three miles (one way) from the Aravaipa trailhead. There's quite a few good camping spots along Turkey Creek.
