100 Years on the Lincoln Highway
Before the Interstate Highway System, before famed Route 66, before highways were even numbered, there was one road that started it all, one road that changed America forever: The Lincoln Highway. “100 Years on the Lincoln Highway” is the story of the first coast to coast automobile road in the United States and its impact on Wyoming.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
The Union Pacific Railroad (reporting mark UP) (or legally Union Pacific Railroad Company and simply Union Pacific) is a freight hauling railroad that operates 8,500 locomotives over 32,100 route-miles in 23 states west of Chicago and New Orleans. The Union Pacific Railroad system is the second largest in the United States after the BNSF Railway and is one of the world's largest transportation companies. The Union Pacific Railroad is the principal operating company of the Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE: UNP); both are headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska.
Union Pacific is known for pioneering multiple innovative locomotives, typically the most powerful of their era. These include members of the Challenger-type (such as the 3985, the 3977), and the Northern-type (the 844), as well as the famous Big Boy steam locomotives. Union Pacific ordered the first (diesel) streamliner, the largest fleet of turbine-electric locomotives in the world, and still owns the largest operational diesel locomotive.
The Union Pacific legacy began in 1862 with the original company, called the Union Pacific Rail Road, which was part of the First Transcontinental Railroad project, later known as the Overland Route. The railroad would subsequently be reorganized thrice: as the Union Pacific Railway (which absorbed the original in 1880), as the Union Pacific Railroad (which absorbed the Union Pacific Railway in 1897), and finally as a renamed Southern Pacific Transportation Company (which merged with Union Pacific in 1998).
The current Union Pacific corporation began in 1969 as the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, which was itself created in a reorganization of a railroad whose legacy dated to 1865. Over the years it would grow to include (among others) the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, in addition to its eponymous railroad. The 1998 Union Pacific-Southern Pacific merger was not UP's first: Union Pacific had already merged with Missouri Pacific Railroad, the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company, the Western Pacific Railroad and the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad. However, because the merger with Southern Pacific substantially changed the scope of the Union Pacific railroad, this article will refer to the unmerged system as Union Pacific (Mark I), and the merged system as Union Pacific (Mark II).
Union Pacific (Mark II)'s main competitor is the BNSF Railway, the nation's largest freight railroad by volume, which also primarily services the Continental U.S. west of the Mississippi River. Together, the two railroads have a duopoly on all transcontinental freight rail lines in the U.S.

Camas Prairie Railroad
The Camas Prairie Railroad operated in northern Idaho and was jointly owned by the Union Pacific and Northern Pacific Railroads. We feature a freelanced version of it this month built in HO scale by the Lewis-Clark Model Railroad Club of Lewiston, Idaho. The club is loosely based from the 1950s to the 1970s and runs a variety of steam and diesel power. Diesel fans will get to see a few newer locomotives that we ran during our visit, as the club is not strict about the era. The layout’s hub is in Lewiston, Idaho, and the line runs east through Cottonwood and up into the Craig Mountains. This feature also includes photos, video, and an article and the Premium Edition includes 360 degrees images and video.

Blood on the Marias: The Baker Massacre
On the morning of January 23, 1870, troops of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry attacked a Piegan Indian village on the Marias River killing many more than the army’s count of 173, most of them women, children, and old men. Intended as a retaliation against Mountain Chief’s renegade band, the massacre sparked public outrage when news sources revealed that the battalion had attacked Heavy Runner’s innocent village—even after guides told its inebriated commander, Major Eugene Baker, he was on the wrong trail. In his book—from the University of Oklahoma—Bozeman author Paul R. Wylie explores the history of Euro-American involvement with the Piegans, beginning with the Hudson Bay Company in the 17th century and culminating in the tragic events on the Marias.

KCWIR: Hate filled slayings at the Jewish Community Center and Village Shalom thrust our metro into the international news spotlight.
Kansas City was making world news this week. But for all the wrong reasons, as a white supremacist shot to death three people outside two Jewish facilities in southern Overland Park. Federal prosecutors say they intend to file hatecrime charges against 73year old Frazier Glenn Cross (a.k.a. Glenn Miller) who is accused of gunning down his victims outside the Jewish Community Center and Village Shalom.
HIGHWAY SHOOTINGS, SUSPECT ARRESTED
Is a highway shooter's reign of terror over? In another story that's been bringing national news attention to the metro, Kansas City police say they've finally caught the man who's been shooting at drivers on highways from Leawood to Blue Springs.
STREETCAR RAILS ARRIVE
The first shipment of steel rail for the city's downtown streetcar line was trucked in Wednesday morning. 139,000 pounds of steel was unloaded off of three trucks from a mill in Steelton, Pennsylvania. Back in October, streetcar backers were celebrating the first development project directly tied to the 2mile streetcar line. A Boulderbased developer said they were seduced by the economic potential of streetcars to draw up plans for a 50 unit apartment building directly along the route. Sixmonths on, with the rail now being laid, is there any other development that can be directly attributed to the streetcar line?
METRO NORTH MALL SHUTTERED
It's been A Northland fixture for nearly 40 years and on Tuesday, it officially shut its doors. When it opened in 1976, Metro North Mall was the second largest in our metro. Now only Macy's remains at the shopping center on Barry Road and US 169 highway. The plan? To demolish the shopping center and replace it with a more compact, shopable, onestory indoor mall.
SEBELIUS FOR SENATE?
A week after announcing her resignation as the nation's Health Secretary, could Kathleen Sebelius be heading on to the campaign trail? The New York Times reports that Sebelius is considering a run for the US Senate seat in Kansas currently occupied by Pat Roberts. The Times says that at 77, Roberts who is running for a fourth term is considered vulnerable. Is there any validity to this report or is this just wishful thinking?
BIG BOOST TO GETTING PEOPLE LIVING DOWNTOWN
The Power and Light District has been facing ongoing financial woes. Is the entertainment venue about to get a big boost as the Cordish company is scheduled to break ground on a 25--story apartment tower at 13th and Walnut? That's 315 upscale apartments with all those new residents with money to burn. The groundbreaking was supposed to be this week but was called off at the last moment due to terrible weather.
MAKE OR BREAK: DECISION TIME FOR KCMO SCHOOLS
What ever happened to those efforts to fix Missouri's school transfer law? What about those contentious state plans to intervene in the state's unaccredited school districts? Join Nick Haines and the rest of the KCPT crew, this Monday evening April 21st, 2014 at 6pm at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library for MAKE OR BREAK DECISION TIME FOR KANSAS CITY SCHOOLS. We bring together every major player in Kansas City and Missouri education to connect the dots. And you're invited. RSVP now.
We'll be taping this public forum for later broadcast on KCPT.

ABOUT THIS FEED:
Horseshoe Curve is the three-track (formerly four-track) railroad curve on the Norfolk Southern Railway's (NS) Pittsburgh Line, the former Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) mainline, between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Approximately 50 freight trains travel the Curve each day.
The 360 camera can pan the entire curve, when an operator is available. During the daytime hours when an operator is not present the camera is placed on an automatic script (program), which does auto pans from one predetermined position to another, but it is not capable of panning with the movement/direction of a passing train.
Amtrak's Pennsylvanian passenger train (between New York City and Pittsburgh via Philadelphia) passes this camera twice daily, once per direction.
There is an ATCS layout available, with server (data) coverage to the east of the Curve down in Altoona itself.
There are 3 radio streams available, see links above. You will also hear conversations (between the dispatcher and crews) from said radio feed being broadcast over the speaker at the Curve.
The engine on display is former PRR GP9 #7048, built by EMD in December 1955 in Order #5408, to Penn Central (PC) #7048, to Conrail (CR) #7048, then donated for display.
When’s the next train? Yeah, we get this a lot. There’s no schedule for freight trains, but some of our more knowledgeable members will provide real-time information when it’s available. Please refrain from asking.

SUMMARY
=======
Kansas City is the largest city in the U.S. state of Missouri, bordering Johnson County and Wyandotte County in Kansas. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city had an estimated population of 488,943 in 2017, making it the 37th most-populous city in the United States and the most populated city of the Kansas City metropolitan area. It also has the fifth highest murder rate out of every city in the United States. Kansas City was founded in the 1830s as a Missouri River port east of its confluence with the Kansas River. It was named after the Kansa or Kaw people who had their significant populations in what is now the state of Kansas. On June 1, 1850, the town of Kansas was incorporated; shortly after came the establishment of the Kansas Territory. Confusion between the two ensued and the name Kansas City was assigned to distinguish them soon after.
Sitting on Missouri's western boundary, with Downtown near the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, the historic city encompasses some 319.03 square miles (826.3 km2), making it the 23rd largest city by total area in the United States. Most of the city lies within Jackson County, but portions spill into Clay, Cass, and Platte counties. Along with Independence, one of its major suburbs, it serves as one of the two county seats of Jackson County. Other cities with a population of over 50,000 in the Kansas City metropolitan area include the Kansas cities of Overland Park, Kansas City, Olathe, Shawnee, Lenexa and the Missouri cities of Lee's Summit and Blue Springs.
The city is composed of several neighborhoods, including the River Market District in the north, the 18th and Vine District in the east, and the Country Club Plaza in the south. Kansas City is known for its long tradition of jazz music and culture, for its cuisine (including its distinctive style of barbecue), and its craft breweries.

Chicago ( (listen), locally also ), officially the City of Chicago, is the third most populous city in the United States. As of the 2017 census-estimate, Chicago has a population of 2,716,450, which makes it the most populous city in both the state of Illinois and the Midwestern United States. It is the county seat of Cook County, the second most populous county in the United States. Chicago is the principal city of the Chicago metropolitan area, which is often referred to as Chicagoland. The Chicago metropolitan area has nearly 10 million people, is the third-largest in the United States, the fourth largest in North America, and the third largest metropolitan area in the world by land area.
Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837 near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed and grew rapidly in the mid-nineteenth century. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which destroyed several square miles and left more than 100,000 homeless, the city made a concerted effort to rebuild. The construction boom accelerated population growth throughout the following decades, and by 1900 Chicago was one of the five largest cities in the world. During this period, Chicago made noted contributions to urban planning and zoning standards, including new construction styles (including the Chicago School of architecture), the development of the City Beautiful Movement, and the steel-framed skyscraper.Chicago is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation. It was the site of the creation of the first standardized futures contracts at the Chicago Board of Trade, which today is the largest and most diverse derivatives market in the world, generating 20% of all volume in commodities and financial futures. O'Hare International Airport is the one of the busiest airports in the world, and the region also has the largest number of U.S. highways and railroad freight. In 2012, Chicago was listed as an alpha global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and it ranked seventh in the entire world in the 2017 Global Cities Index. Chicago has the fourth-largest gross metropolitan product in the world—generating about $670.5 billion according to September 2017 estimates—ranking it after the metropolitan areas of Tokyo, New York City, and Los Angeles, and ranking ahead of number five London and number six Paris. ABOUT THIS FEED:
Ashland, VA, in Central Virginia, is located on the CSX RF&P Subdivision, the former Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad, and is about 15 miles north of Richmond. The town gets over 20 Amtrak passenger trains and 20-25+ CSX freight trains daily. It’s a designated quiet zone, but the crew can use the horns at their discretion. The maximum speed for trains passing through the town's center is 35 miles per hour (MPH).
There are 3 cameras available. The default camera is an Axis 360 located on top of the Visitor’s Center (train station), and 2 static cameras facing North and South on the other side of the intersection. Desktop users can use the suitcase icon at the bottom of the video to toggle between cams. For other devices, you can access the static cams with the links above.
See Tiny Tim’s Trains and Toys Store on the south cam? It's awesome, and worth a visit. Tell Suzanne and crew we said hello!
There is no ATCS layout (and no server coverage) available for the RF&P Sub, as it does not use radio code line (RCL) for switch-and-signal control (RCL is essential for ATCS availability).
There is a radio feed available, listening to the CSX RF&P Sub (BD dispatcher) and Richmond Terminal (FB dispatcher) channels, as well as the Buckingham Branch Railroad's (BBRR) Piedmont Sub channel (which crosses the RF&P Sub at a diamond in Doswell, to the north of Ashland):
A second radio feed providing the Richmond Terminal channel, as well as those for both the North End and Bellwood Subs, can be found here (select the Richmond Area Stream):
When’s the next train? Yeah, we get this a lot. You can figure out the next Amtrak passenger train with this handy link:
There’s no schedule for freight trains, but some of our more knowledgeable members will provide real-time information when it’s available. Please refrain from asking.
