Brazil, Ferrovia Tereza Cristina: steam hauled coal train
english text below.
Impressions from a FarRail charter in July 2013. Steam locomotive No. 205 from Tubarão railway museum replaces the scheduled diesel on a coal train. The wagons are loaded at Rio Fiorita. No. 205 struggles on the gradient to Siderópolis. It finally stalls as the boiler pressure went down due to bad quality of locomotive coal. While the loco waits for help from a diesel the FarRail tour group empties the fridge of a trackside bar. Next morning the loco performs better on the Congonhas bridge near Tubarão.

Railroad, Brazil's Atlantic forest
Traveling along 110 km of a railroad with 125 years of history through the largest preserved area of Brazil's Atlantic forest. The Mountain Range Train of Paraná departs from the city of Curitiba to Morretes everyday and on Sundays it also arrives at Paranaguá. The trip takes approximately 3 hours.
CITIES WHERE THE TRAIN PASSES BY
CURITIBA
Curitiba is the capital of the state of Paraná, where Serra Verde Express headquarters are and it is internationally recognized for providing differential treatment to socio-environmental issues. The effort to recycle garbage, dedication to environmental education (the city has a record green area per capita comparing to the other capital cities) and the public transportation system, which is a model for the world, make the city one of the most requested of the country as a destination for Brazilian and foreign tourists.
What to see: Oscar Niemeyer Museum, Botanical Garden, Barigüi Park, Graciosa Road, Santa Felicidade, Wire Opera House, Panoramic Tower (Telepar)
Events: Theatre Festival and Christmas of Light
MORRETES
The city of Morretes was founded in 1721. It is in the middle of the Mountain Range of Paraná, between the capital and the coast. The bucolism of its routine, the pleasant climate, the options for ecotourism, the gastronomic attractions and historic buildings attract hundreds of citizens from Curitiba (Curitibanos) to the city every weekend. Morretes is being discovered by tourists who love nature and seek, through ecotourism, an interaction with the environment.
What to see: Typical Food, Graciosa Road, Mountain Range tracks, Historical Center, Marumbi Park, Porto de Cima, Nhundiaquara River.
Events: Sugar Cane Party, bike rides, Agricultural Fair and Crafts Festival, Winter Festival, Barreado Festival.
PARANAGUÁ
As Morretes and Antonina, Paranaguá is a historical city of Paraná's coast. The city had its development stimulated by the railroad construction which connected it with Curitiba. Thus, the Port of Paranaguá became the second of Brazil in terms of volume and the first in terms of grain transportation. Founded in 1648, the city is rich in historical buildings to explore such as museums, churches, colonial mansions, monuments, among others.
What to see: Art Market, Colonial Houses, Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology
Events: Nossa Senhora do Rosário Party, Nossa Senhora do Rocio Party, Christmas Auto

Steam train ride in Guararema, Brazil (part 2). From Luis Carlos to Guararema
This touristic steam train is operated by ABPF (Brazilian Railroad Preservation Association) and rides every weekend from Guararema Station to Luis Carlos Village and back. The round trip takes around two hours including a one hour stop in Luis Carlos. An ancient American Baldwin steam locomotive known as The Old Lady is used to pull three perfectly preserved passenger cars that belonged to the historical São Paulo Railway Company between the two localities that are about seven kilometers away from each other. In this video you will be able to see some footage from the train at Luis Carlos Station including internal views of one of the passenger cars and some interesting maneuvering done by the locomotive. You'll also be able to see the departure from Luis Carlos, some scenes during the way back to Guararema and the arrival at Guararema Station - 22/01/2017
33 - Brazil, Miami c1976 (Ivor Harding)
Ivor Harding 1943-2016
Ivor spent most of his young and adult life filming railway locomotives using cine film and slides to record his amazing adventures.
He travelled to many countries from the late 1950's witnessing and recording the ebbing days of steam railways in the most amazing locations in the world.
His dedication in chasing his dream has left us with some very rare and wonderful images from mainline to mountain quarries.
He amassed some 19,000+ slides and 90 hours of colour cine sound film recording during his travels.
He asked to have his collection of railway images shared with as large an audience as possible.
He left behind a fabulous legacy of this wonderful subject and of a truly amazing person.

Piabeta Supervia train ride ballast cars, Rio State, Brazil
Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 12:44 PM. Still at the far endpoint of this train's run, Saracuruna, and we're waiting for the train to get ready to take us back. I try to zoom to the engine as it switches back to the track to connect to the other end of the train again, but discover I've accidentally tweaked something on my camera that prevents it from auto-focusing when zooming. So I pan around and show as best I can the only train cars I've seen on this line that aren't passenger cars: ballast cars. I asked around and this line is only used for commuter trains, which makes sense; it's narrow-gauge and light rail and kind of rickety. But they gotta get that ballast out there.

Zimbabwe - Garratts on coal trains, Hwange 2005
It's many years since Garratts worked coal trains in the UK (although I regret to say that I can remember them) but in 2005, if you were lucky, the experience could still be had in Zimbabwe. Here we see Garratt 4-6-4+4-6-4's numbers 12 and 22 working the service between Hwange Colliery and Thomson Junction in August of that year.
