✏︎ As we decided to head for Sapa in the Northwestern region of Vietnam, we had to figure out how to get there. However it wasn't hard to pick the most intriguing solution, as we found out there are night trains from Hanoi to Lao Cai which is the train station closest to Sapa.
We booked a VIP cabin, which means we have a 2 berth cabin all to ourselves. You can also book a bed in a 4 berth cabin, but those were simply too small for comfort if you ask us.
The whole experience was great. Of course it's not easy to get a proper nights sleep, but it's a great way to save both money and time, as the train removes the need to accommodation elsewhere. If you are going to Sapa from Hanoi this is very much recommendable.

Vietnam Overnight Sleeper Train | Hanoi to Sapa
While we were in Vietnam we took an overnight sleeper train from Hanoi to Lao Cai. We then took a shuttle from Lao Cai to Sapa. After our stay in Sapa we attempted to take another sleeper train back to Hanoi but it turned out to be a bad experience. This video shows you what it was like riding a sleeper train in Vietnam. It was not at all what I expected.

After an extremely heavy downpour in the morning, we decided against getting the morning bus to Sapa and instead, booked a sleeper train to Lao Cai, where we would then get a bus to Sapa.

VIETNAM OVERNIGHT TRAIN TO HANOI! Tour of Soft & Hard Sleeper
Travel by overnight sleeper train in Vietnam from Danang to Hanoi! I rode the 4-berth soft sleeper and toured the 6-berth hard sleeper near the end. Watch more Vietnam vlogs:

Hi family! Alright...so this overnight train ride to Hanoi was not the most pleasant for me; however, it is still a great way to travel Vietnam. Here are some things I'd recommend you doing if you are considering taking the sleeper train:
-DO bring food & snacks! No food cart rolled around during the entire 16 hour train ride. I kept trying to listen for the wheeling of the cart and even left my door open around dinner time. There was nothing. There was water and hot water though :) Cup o noodles team!
-DO bring jacket, scarf, or sarong that you can wear. It gets COLD at night especially as we get closer North. You can even lay them down if you're afraid of unclean bedsheets.
-DO check the door & lights in your room when you arrive in case there's some kind of malfunction. You may be able to ask the train staff (who come around sometimes) to switch to another one.
-DON'T talk super loudly and be mindful of other passengers in the room. A man ended up taking the berth next to me at 12am and was talking on the phone for a whole hour :/
-DON'T buy your tickets online if you can just get it at the station a few days earlier or even a day earlier! I met a couple of travellers who just showed up that day and booked. It is always cheaper way cheaper at the train station. OR ask your hotel staff to help you book it. Don't go to a tour agency - they'll charge you lots. I was traveling during TET so had no choice but to secure it online. If you're on last resort - check out 12go.asia (the site I use for train & ferry travel in Southeast Asia).
If you don't want to take a sleeper train but still want to experience it, take the Vietnam railway train from Hue to Danang or Danang to Hue. It is a 2.5 hour train ride with breathtaking views of Vietnam's coastline! You can just get a regular seat, no sleeper needed.
While this train ride didn't go so well for me, I know the experience is different for everyone. Take it or not, it's up to you :)! It IS way better than the overnight busses - or so I heard.
Thank you for tuning in! Hope this information helps you when traveling in Vietnam!

Road To Sapa From Hanoi Via Lao Cai By Sleeper Train in Vietnam 「寝台列車でハノイからラオカイ経由でサパへ」
To go to Sapa from Hanoi, you can go directly to Sapa by bus or
There are two ways to get to the town of Lao Cai near the border China and then take a bus.
I wanted to take a sleeper train this time, so I went to Sapa using the railway. When I got on, it was a first-class sleeper and a compartment for four people, about $ 22.
In fact, I was alone in the room, so it was quite comfortable.
When you get off the train and leave the station, there are many minibuses to Sapa waiting for you, and you can leave for Sapa immediately. In my case, it was 50,000 Vietnamese Dong, and I was able to arrive at Sapa in about an hour.

Journey to Sapa – Vietnam (with Hanoi and Ta Van)
Jump to Sa Pa ➞ 0:56
Compilation of our week in Sapa. First we spend a day in Hanoi. Afterwards the train ride to Lao Cai in North VIetnam. And finally the bus to Sa Pa. Sa Pa is awesome place to visit, but these days it became very touristy. If you have the chance, choose one of the surrounding villages. Beautiful, untouched nature will amaze your for sure. We have spend two days in Ta Van and one day in Ta Phin (Lao Chai is also a good place to stay).
Hanoi to Sapa Sleeper Bus Comparison - Private Cabin Type VS Open Sleeping Berth Type (Vietnam)
We tried both Private Cabin Type bus (from Hanoi to Sapa), and the 3-row open sleeper bus from Sapa to Hanoi, Vietnam, so my choice is based on personal experience.
Private cabin bus is from Fansipan Express, whereas, the open sleeper berth bus is from Green Bus. The former is more expensive than the latter.
Watch the video and weigh the difference ($7), either you save or spend more on comfort.
You can book both via your hotel or any tour operator or direct. You can book it online at:
