Trakai, is the former capital of Lithuania and home to the beautifully restored medieval Trakai Island Castle. Trakai Island Castle is a 14th century fortress in the middle of Lake Galve. Once a home to Lithuania's grand dukes, it now houses the Trakai History Museum with archaeological objects, coins and crafts. Trakai Historical National Park was founded on April 23, 1991 to preserve the park's natural aesthetic and to preserve Trakai as an important part of Lithuanian history. It is the only historical national park not only in Lithuania but also throughout Europe. The first settlements in this area appeared as early as the first millennium A.D. 중세의 전투 대결과 문화를 재현하는 중세축제다. 리투아니아를 비롯하여 벨라루스 이탈리아 독일 폴란드 등에서 중세의 역사와 문화를 연구하는 동호회원들이 참가했다. 참가자들이 대회를 준비하는 사이 한쪽에서는 리투아니아 전통춤 공연이 펼쳐지고 있다. 축제 현장은 중세분위기로 가득하다. 중세의 유모차가 등장하고, 중세의 여인이 그윽한 눈길로 바라보는 곳엔 대장장이가 있고 그 옆으론 장터가 펼쳐진다. 또 한편에는 중세의 식당이 차려져 지나가는 사람들을 유혹하기도 한다. 활터에선 참가자들이 집단전투의 한 종목인 활쏘기 연습에 여념이 없다. 이곳은 참가자들의 베이스캠프. 둘러앉은 사람들 중 결투에 참가하는 기사의 표정이 비장하다. 이 축제에서 가장 많은 사람들의 관심을 끄는 것은 중세 기사들의 결투 대회다. 온 몸을 갑옷으로 무장한 기사들의 모습이 긴장감을 더해준다. 드디어 기사결투가 시작됐다. 갑옷으로 무장한 기사들이 중세 기사들처럼 결투를 벌이는 대회이다. 이 결투는 쇼가 아닌 실제상황이다. 경기시간은 1분. 경기시간은 잠깐이지만 온 힘을 다해 싸운 기사들은 기진맥진이다. 판정은 5명의 심판들이 모여 내린다. 이런 대결을 통해 최후의 1인을 뽑는 것이다. 찌르기는 금지되어 있고 정확한 타격에 점수가 주어진다. 기사결투는 다음날까지 계속돼 최종 우승자를 가린다고 하는데 일정상 다 보지 못하는 것이 아쉬웠다.

The Karaites of Trakai, Lithuania Came from The Crimea

Who would have even thought that Trakai is inhabited by the Karaites (Karaimes), a reformed sect of Judaism? The Lithuanian Grand Duke resettled Karaite families from the Crimea for guard purposes and granted privileges in the 14th and 15th centuries.

There is still a small community and an ethnological museum that depicts Karaite dress (very Turkish, eastern in appearance), language (a mixture of Turkic and Hebrew), and distinctive customs. Very interesting!

Miestas taip pat yra Zalgirio krepšinio komanda, viena iš garsiausių Europoje.
Trakai yra viena iš populiariausių turistinių objektų Lietuvoje, kuri tiesiog paženklinta vandeniu. Jį supa daugiau kaip 200 ežerų ir 21 mažų salų, o vienintelė Rytų Europoje esanti pilis pastatyta ant Galvės ežero salos. Trakai Island Castle (Lithuanian: Trakų salos pilis) is an island castle located in Trakai, Lithuania on an island in Lake Galvė. The construction of the stone castle was begun in the 14th century by Kęstutis, and around 1409 major works were completed by his son Vytautas the Great, who died in this castle in 1430. Trakai was one of the main centres of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the castle held great strategic importance.

It is the only insular castle throughout Eastern Europe. It was built on one of the numerous islands in Lake Galvė. The castle was built as a defensive fortress. After the Battle of Žalgiris/Grünwald the castle lost its defensive significance. It was turned into a ducal residence. Trakai Island Castle was the death-place of Grand Duke Vytautas. He died here on 27 October 1430. Later the castle served as a prison. In the XVII century the castle was desolated.Island castle is one of the most often visited historical-architectural monuments in Lithuania. It houses a historical museum which has been working here since 1962. National events, festivals and concerts take place here.
