Glasgow's very last trams - sounds
A friend and I visited Coplawhill Works on 19th November 1962 to assess 1005 for preservation - that's another story! Coincidentally it turned out that the very last trams to be taken into Coplawhill for splitting into two halves and handed over to the breakers were six Mark 1 Coronations stabled in the former Barrland Street Permanent Way Yard. The Coplawhill men that were undertaking the job kindly indulged us even allowing a short drive each. The ground conditions were dreadful and the access point from Albert Drive into Barrland Street remained firmly set, fortuitously, towards Albert Drive. The workers also agreed to the final car running the length of Albert Drive before entering the works. After that the power was turned off to the overhead and Glasgow's very last car had run. Needless to say I am afraid the quality of the recording and photographs are not the best but I thought it worth conserving this little bit of history before the elements disappeared. Most of Coplawhill Works has remained as a performance venue and it was a strange feeling to have a coffee there over 50 years since the last tram ran.

Crich National Tramway Museum, Derbyshire, England | History | Boat Tram Ride | home educating |
We recently visited Crich Tramway Village in Derbyshire which holds a huge collection of preserved Trams, and we took a ride on two of them.
This is a place I have visited many times as a child, my father being a Tram enthusiast and it was also within about an hour's drive from most places we lived as I was growing up! This was, however, my first time back in 25 years. My parent's are members which helps to contribute towards the vast expense of running and maintaining the Trams. Staff, drivers and conductors are all volunteers giving up their time to ensure visitors have a fabulous day. The green double deck tram was out on the tracks all day whilst someone was learning to drive. Crich hold tram driving experience days, which my father went on many years ago.
For my friends across The Pond, if you have ever been to San Francisco you may recognise the Boat tram that we ride on, as one of her sister Blackpool Trams works the Waterfront. I remember riding on the Blackpool Boat Tram as a child in Blackpool.
If you are in the UK and would like to visit Crich please take a look at the website:

Watching the trams go by
On pointsman duty at Black Cat junction, Kennington Cross
When designing this new portable OO gauge London tramway layout I wanted to try to show something of the 'busyness' of the system. In its heyday London had the largest tram fleet in the world. At the busiest junctions over 200 cars an hour could pass in peak times.
The focal point of this model is 'Black Cat junction' near to the fictional Kennington Cross station. This is a double track junction leading to two concentric return loops which encircle the camera position. At the far end of the layout beyond the 'Ferodo' railway bridge at the top of the screen, is a further hidden return loop.
The video shows four E1 type cars running continuously on the layout and being switched at the junction according to route. The up and down lines are on separate controllers both set to a similar speed. Fortunately the current drawn by each individual car does not affect any other car(s) on the same section so speeds are generally pretty constant with just a little variation between cars. Of course the double track junction provides the possibility for a near head-on crash.......
The four cars are dressed for routes 2, 4, 8, and 10. The large 8 on the ex-Walthamstow K class car and the two piece recessed blind of the rehab E1r on route 10 are recognisable (even on the video) and oncoming cars on these routes will be seen to take the right fork (to the left of the screen) thus following the inner loop anticlockwise. The standard E1s on routes 2 and 4 will fork left (to the right of the screen) and take the outer clockwise loop.
I am changing the points using simple wire pushrods that run under the road surface. Both facing and trailing points need to be changed - loose trailing points as per prototype are problematic with live frogs of course . I also occasionally regulate the service by holding cars at an appropriate switched section. It's a surprisingly intense task! At least I don't have to stand in the pouring rain beneath an oilskin raincoat!
I managed to change the points for nearly four minutes without major incident.
The camera is standing on a small tripod on the roof of Kennington Cross Underground station.
Sit back and watch the trams go by!
Crich Tramway Village & The National Tramway Museum, Crich, Derbyshire, England - 13th August, 2014
The National Tramway Museum, at Crich, in Derbyshire, England, is situated within Crich Tramway Village, a period village containing a pub, cafe, old-style sweetshop, including the tram depots. The trams at Crich mostly ran along the streets of cities in United Kingdom before the 1960s, with some trams rescued and restored (even from other countries) as the systems closed.
This film features views around the Village and museum, and features extensive footage of trams in the engine sheds and exhibition hall, as well as trams moving along the 1 mile track.
The film ends with snippets of footage taken on the return ride along the 1 mile of track, using a Veho Muvi action camera.
