EXPLORING VIETNAM: Trang An, Ninh Binh, Tam Coc, Hang Mua | Travel Vlog
This was the scariest (and one of the best things I've ever done). Exploring Trang An grottoes and travelling around Ninh Binh including climbing up to Tam Coc to Hang Mua peak! I was also followed by a family of mountain goats - turns out I was the pigeon in this case.

More beautiful than Ha Long Bay?! | Trang An Grottoes in Ninh Binh, Vietnam
We had a rough start to our time in Ninh Binh, Vietnam but quickly fell in love with this beautiful place. We took the train from Hanoi to the town of Tam Coc and then headed to check out Hoa Lu and the Trang An Grottoes. We chose to do route #3 at the grottoes and enjoyed our boat ride through the caves and river running around the towering limestone karsts.

Trang An Grottoes, Ninh Binh, Vietnam Travel Vlog
10 Januari 2017
Vlog nr 23
The trip with my motorbike continues down south and I stopped in Ninh Binh and did a boat tour in Trang An Grottoes.
Why Ninh Binh (Vietnam) should be on the TOP of your travel bucket list
We decided to skip busy Ha Long Bay to explore Ninh Binh instead which has been described as Ha Long Bay on land. We have to say we have zero regrets. Ninh Binh turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of our Vietnam trip.
We start this vlog off with a tour of our accommodation. Located right at the bottom of the Mua Caves we stayed at Hang Mua Ecolodge.
Hang Mua Ecolodge
Address: Khê Hạ, Ninh Xuân, Ninh Xuân, Hoa Lư, Ninh Bình 430000, Vietnam
With a tranquil view of the limestone caves to one side and rice fields on the other it made for an excellent accommodation in Ninh Binh for 5 days.
Once we were settled in it was time to climb the peak of the Hang Mua mountain where we could get a beautiful view of the surrounding area.
The next day we were picked up by our Ninh Binh private tour operator - Tommy’s Travel Service. Tommy is a Ninh Binh local unlike many of the other Ninh Binh tour operators and he organized an awesome schedule for us. If you're planning a visit to Ninh Binh Vietnam, we highly recommend Tommy's Travel Service. He's a real nice guy too!
Firstly we visited Trang An for a boat tour. This is also the former set for the Skull Island scenes from the King Kong Movie (which have since been removed, so we were lucky to have seen it). We were rowed through various caves and canals and saw amazing scenery unique to Ninh Binh. From the surrounding limestone caves to the complex water systems that ran between, we left with the most wonderful impression of Ninh Binh.
Ecotourism Trang An Boat Tour
Address: Tràng An, Ninh Xuân, Hoa Lư, Ninh Bình 431995, Vietnam
Hours: Monday - Sunday 7AM–4PM
Following the tour of Trang An we head over to visit two tombs of former emperors of Hue followed by lunch then Phat Diem Cathedral which is a unique cathedral that has a mixture of both Vietnamese and Gothic French architecture.
Phat Diem
Address: TT. Phát Diệm, Kim Sơn District, Ninh Bình Province 430000, Vietnam

NINH BINH - TRANG AN IS A MUST SEE!! (Vietnam)
Straight up. Ninh Binh amazed us. Mostly Trang An, which is an unbelievable journey through one of the most beautiful landscapes we have ever seen. We heard many times how Tam Coc is the main draw in Ninh Binh and as soon as we arrived that was our plan.
Once we started talking to a few people they told us we should check out the alternative option; Trang An. It is less expensive, a better experience, less touristy, and overall just way better. We thought we should check it out and we weren't disappointed.
This day was up there around one of our favorite days yet on our entire trip. If you find yourself in Vietnam, a trip to Ninh Binh is definitely worth it and make sure you go check out Trang An.
This is the start of our journey to pursue a life fulfilling our travel passions while we document the ups and downs of embracing the 'location independent', remote working - digital nomad - lifestyle.

Trang An Grottoes Boat Tour in Ninh Binh, Vietnam!
A short bike ride from the Tam Coc area in Ninh Binh, Vietnam are the Trang An Grottoes. Nicknamed “Ha Long Bay on Land”, it is comprised of karst limestone peaks, emerald colored water and spectacular caves. This can be done as a day trip out of Hanoi.
Check out out photos, how-to's and recommendations by clicking the link below:
Where are the Trang An Grottoes located?
In Ninh Binh which is a city in northern Vietnam about 94km/58 mi south of Hanoi.
How do you get to Nihn Bihn?
You need to get to the city of Ninh Binh which can be accessed via bus, train or motorbike from Hanoi. When we visited, we took a bus from Halong Bay. It was a 5-6 hour bus ride. We recommend staying in Tam Coc.
How do you get to Trang An Grottoes?
From Ninh Binh you can take a taxi to Trang An. Alternatively, if you stay in Tam Coc, it is an easy bike ride. We highly recommend taking the scenic bike ride as you will cycle through rice fields, small villages and mountains.
How should you tour Trang An Grottoes?
Most people choose to tour this area via a boat ride through the valleys and caves. People particularly like this boat tour rather than the over touristy Tam Coc Boat Tour (we’ve heard Tam Coc is over crowded, more expensive, less caves and the locals selling souvenirs are pushy).
When you arrive, you will need to choose which tour you want to do. See the signs below. Route 1 is longer and featured in the video above. Route 2 is shorter with less stops. Next, go buy a ticket and then enter the line to get into a boat. They fill up the boats 4-6 people at a time.
When we went it was close to closing and we were the only ones in the line so we had to wait for a third to show up. Luckily for us, they let us go with only 3 ppl in the boat. It is possible to pay extra to have the boat to yourself.
Alternatively, you can bike, hike or drive around the mountains but note you won’t be able to explore the caves as these are only accessible via the water.
How long does it take to tour Trang An Grottoes?
This depends on which tour you choose. If you are taking the shorter tour, about 2.5 hours. The longer tour is about 3-3.5 hours.
What should you bring?
Sunscreen and any other sun protection
Poncho /Umbrella or other rain protection
Water
Snacks if you want
Camera
Money
How much does it cost?
Parking is 15,000 VND
Entrance is 200,000 VND
2T2T TIPS
Go early or late to avoid the groups of people on a day trip from Hanoi.
There is no shade and it can get extremely hot so bring appropriate sun protection for yourself.
Bring cash to tip your boat rower. They work very very hard and they expect it at the end
Bring change for the restrooms.
Bring cash to park your bike or your car/motorbike.
There are shops there for souvenirs and food.
There are times when you will need to duck low to avoid hitting your head on the cavern ceilings so if you have a bad back or physically limited, this is something to take into consideration.
What else can you see nearby?
Hike Mua Cave (4.3 km/2.67 mi)
Shop in Tam Coc for some of Vietnam’s cheapest souvenirs (10.7 km/6.65 mi)
Try out the Tam Coc Boat Ride (10.7 km/6.65 mi)

This day trip was recommended by a guy at the hotel I was staying at in Hanoi, it was an awesome day out and I would recommend it anyone in the area.

Tràng An is a scenic area near Ninh Bình, Vietnam renowned for its boat cave tours. On 23 June 2014, at the 38th session of the World Heritage Committee in Doha, the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Trang An area has two main types of ecosystems: limestone mountains ecosystems and aquatic ecosystems. The biological diversity of the communities is a major factor that constitutes these two ecosystems. Join me Monday to Friday on this amazing road trip through Vietnam. I aim to create an entertaining piece of content about my travels 5 times per week. Unless literally everything goes wrong, but than still, I'll try to make a video about that! I can be super excited about the simple things in life and I think that life is amazing! By creating these VLOGS I hope to put a smile on your face too every day of the week!
Before motorbiking through Vietnam, I crossed the Pacific Ocean on sailing boats and visited The Unites States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, The Marquesas Islands, Tahiti, The Kingdom Of Niue, Rarotonga, Tonga, Fiji, some other small islands and ended up in New Zealand. In New Zealand I cycled 3.000km from top to bottom. After that I flew to Vietnam to start this motorbike tour. Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi by Motorbike.
See here my planned route:
