Trans Am Totem - Vancouver, BC, Canada - June 2019
I'd heard about this in the news and sure enough, there's a bunch of stacked cars in the heart of Vancouver.

Vancouver Biennale - Trans Am Totem
A stack of demolished cars has taken over a median by Main Street skytrain station.
Here is the story behind the surprise sculpture.
Vancouver Biennale: Marcus Bowcott's Trans Am Totem
Artist Marcus Bowcott’s Trans Am Totem, a sculpture installation curated by the Vancouver Biennale, began construction on Monday, March 30.
According to Bowcott, the sculpture is a commentary on consumer culture specific to its location at the foot of False Creek at Quebec Street and Milross Avenue.
Vancouver Trans Am Totem
Five full-size cars have been stacked on top of one another, then perched atop a 20-foot-high cedar stump, all part of a brand new sculpture called Trans Am Totem on the edge of False Creek. Located not far from Science World, the monumental work of art is the latest installation for the Vancouver Biennale, the city’s biannual public art exhibition.
The provocative sculpture is the work of local artist Marcus Bowcott, who spent part of his career towing logs along the Fraser River and around False Creek. For Bowcott, the installation is a commentary on the evolution of the area and the ascendance of consumer, throwaway culture in Vancouver.
The “totem” theme is an allusion to Vancouver’s First Nations legacy. As recently as 150 years ago, the area around False Creek was tidal flats and pristine old growth forest. A Squamish village stood at the mouth of the inlet and nearby were Musqueam and Tsleil-Watuth communities.
The old-growth cedar stump in the sculpture – brought over from southern Vancouver Island – references False Creek’s logging and industrial past. The shores were once lined with sawmills and beehive burners, and the waterway itself was filled with booms of old-growth Douglas Firs floated in from surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, the collection of five scrap cars – bigger and bigger models stacked one atop the other, with a Trans Am at the peak – offers a commentary on the dramatic transformation of False Creek and Vancouver since the 1980s. The area is now crawling with traffic and thick with high-rise towers, symbols of a Vancouver that is wealthier than ever but less connected with the landscape and more addicted to consumerism.
“In a certain sense I’m saying, ‘Let’s realize we’re on the horns of a dilemma here,’” Bowcott said to The Georgia Straight. “We’re fascinated by speed, we’re fascinated by consumer objects, and this consumerism has an effect on our nature.”
The sculpture took two full years to complete and involved meticulously stripping out the interiors of scrap cars to minimize weight and then mounting the vehicles on a steel column. Finally, the cars were repainted in vibrant colours and the head and tail lights were wired to be illuminated by solar power.
Trans Am Totem stands at the eastern end of False Creek, near the intersection of Quebec Street and Pacific Boulevard. The artist has started an Indiegogo campaign to recoup some of the costs of the installation.

Trans Am Totem Pole - Vancouver's newest art or an eyesore?
This sculpture incorporates old-growth cedar, wrecked cars, touches on history of the site from trees to transit. Interestingly enough it came up on April 1 by local artist Marcus Bowcott and his wife Helene and it's to stay for two years, For some it's art for the others an eyesore or sight pollution. You decide folks.

Artist's Statement:
Trans Am Totem is a meditation on contemporary technological culture in relation to Vancouver and it’s history. The sculpture is comprised of 5 discarded automobiles placed on top of a 20’ high old growth cedar tree. Each car – ‘extension of our bodies’ – projects it’s own, unique aesthetic. In aggregate, they refer to our dominant consumer culture. The ubiquitous presence of cars in our midst has fundamentally re-shaped our landscape. See the story at Indiegogo.
The sculpture occupies a traffic median in a busy urban inter-section at Quebec Street and Pacific Boulevard in Vancouver, BC. The materials and objects that make up Trans Am Totem refer to the history of the place. 150 years ago the site – known today as False Creek – was shoreline, tidal flats and pristine old growth forest. It was in proximity to the Squamish, Musqueam and Tsleil-Watuth Nations. The entrance of False Creek, was the Squamish village Snauk. False Creek later became Vancouver’s first industrial zone – a collection of sawmills and beehive burners that were ringed by an ever-changing collection of log booms full of old growth Douglas Firs. Over the years the mills got bigger, the logs got smaller and the second growth timber replaced the old growth. During the 1980’s the mills were removed and the area was gradually transformed into its present incarnation of stadiums, high rise towers, transit corridors and pedestrian side walks. Trans Am Totem reflects upon this site and it’s history through references to old growth forest, logging and stacked, manufactured structures.

As a young man, I worked as a deckhand on the towboats towing log booms into False Creek to be processed for lumber. The wood and the cars of “Trans Am Totem” speak to the identity of Vancouver: Where we were, where we are, and where we are going to be. We are raising a totem, and it’s about our past and our present, and it’s about how our culture intersects with nature and this place. – Marcus Bowcott (

217.5 Arc x 13 By Artist Bernar Venet Vancouver Downtown Biennale Vancouver, BC
Bernar Venet's amazing work 217.5 Arc x 13 is a piece of his Arc arrangement of figures which show the magnificence, adjust, and flexibility of crude steel. The name of this fine art is an exact depiction of its scientific synthesis. The majority of the bars in the figure are settled and bent to a similar point giving a feeling of adjusting and effortlessness. Venet utilizes numerical controls of this modern material to investigate the interconnected connections among nature, humankind, and the universe. The monotonous thirteen bends give a resting yet the musical feeling of development and smoothness. The crude red-dark colored rust shade of the unpainted surfaces of the corten steel, a bona fide surface whereupon Venet demands, encourages a collaboration with the normal components. This model was procured by the Vancouver Biennale Legacy Foundation in 2007.

Totem Poles At Brockton Point Stanley Park Hidden Street Attraction Vancouver, BC 溫哥華史丹利公園原住民圖騰柱
The nine totem poles at Brockton Point are BC's most visited tourist attraction.
The collection started at Lumberman's Arch in the 1920s when the Park Board bought four totems from Vancouver Island's Alert Bay. More purchased totems came from Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) and the BC central coast Rivers Inlet, to celebrate the 1936 Golden Jubilee. In the mid-1960s, the totem poles were moved to the attractive and accessible Brockton Point.
The Skedans Mortuary Pole is a replica as the original was returned home to Haida Gwaii. In the late 1980s, the remaining totem poles were sent to various museums for preservation and the Park Board commissioned and loaned replacement totems.
The ninth and most recent totem pole, carved by Robert Yelton of the Squamish Nation, was added to Brockton Point in 2009.

The Stop By Michael Zheng Vancouver Biennale Vancouver, BC 溫哥華市區裝置藝術
Zheng’s work, like his Biennale installation of a series of stop signs with their backs painted pink, is conceptually based, often taking the form of situational intervention, sculpture, and performance. His work creates situations that challenge the established positions so that new perspective becomes possible. His recent projects have taken on various forms of social intervention for which he considers himself as a medium or an enabler for certain experiences and perspectives.

A-maze-ing Laughter By Yue Minjun Vancouver Downtown Biennale Vancouver, BC
In A-maze-ing Laughter Beijing-based artist Yue Minjun depicts his own iconic laughing image, with gaping grins and closed eyes in a state of hysterical laughter, elements that contribute to the artist’s signature trademark. The longer one looks at the 14 cast-bronze figures, the more the contradiction of the silent, frozen form of sculpture becomes obvious.
