Fes (Fez) - the former capital of the oldest cities of Morocco and its spiritual center.
The city of contradictions, you say that you go to Fez, but I know that you do not go in Fes .... - The old adage.

FES MOROCCO - INSIDE THE MEDINA - VLOG
FÈS is the religious and cultural center of Morocco. In this vlog, we go inside the medina and tour the city life, view the architecture, and explore the artisan crafts that made Fes famous around the world.
1. Muslim Cemetery
The best view of the Medina of Fes is from the Muslim Cemetery which sits atop a hill.
2. Fes el Bali - The oldest walled part of Fes Morocco founded between 789 and 808 AD. It has Andalusian design as opposed to Berber influence and it is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Medina is home to over 2,000 mosques and 80,000 people. It is filled with food shops, crafts, and artisans. The medina is a car-free city and the main method of transportation is by donkey.
3. University of Al-Karaouine - The oldest university in the world established in 859 AD. We see the stunning traditional Moroccan architecture including the marble floor, tile walls, fountain, open ceiling and cedar wood work.
4. Moroccan rug - One of the most famous artisan works is the carpets, which are hand woven by women. Some have traditional Berber designs while others are woven with the Fes blue color.
5. Nejjarine Museum - We visit the museum of wood arts and crafts, a beautiful historic building with a rooftop view of Fes.
► ►
6. Tannery of Fes - We get a tour of the tanneries in Fes, a huge outdoor leather making processing center where artisans work to color and tan the leather to create handbags, jackets, shoes, and more.

I just finished an incredible, crazy 8 day Adventure Morocco tour with Travel Talk Tours. Here's what we got up to on our Morocco trip, including the Sahara Desert, the coastal hippie town of Essaouira and me swallowing a fly.

Find out all about this tour here
Morocco truly is a haven for the touring motorcyclist, if you want to feed your wanderlust then look no further. It is a breath-taking country of contrasts from the gorgeous coastal regions to the magnificent mountains and their winding passes, lush forests, verdant oasis and barren desert landscapes. This tour allows you to ride it all.
You start by journeying across the Bay of Biscay from Plymouth to Santander before riding the entire length of Spain taking in National parks and the High Sierras. From the straight of Gibraltar you take the fast ferry across to Tangier and then ride up into the mountains and gorges of the countryside around Chefchaouen. You’ll visit the famous city of Fez, with an entire day to explore the sights, before moving on to the Middle Atlas Mountains and the breath-taking Gorge de Ziz.
After overnighting in a desert camp and having another full day to explore the dunes you ride the Todra Gorges into the High Atlas Mountains and then the Valley du Dades on the way back down. One of the highlights of the tour is the Tizi-n-Tichka pass at an altitude of 2500m, this is one of the finest roads in Africa and is guaranteed to take your breath away.
You visit Marrakesh with another full day to explore before moving on to the Moroccan capital at Rabat, for a visit to the King Mohammed Golden Mausoleum on our way back up the coast. From Tangier we hop back across into Spain and spend a few days leisurely making our way back northwards before spending an afternoon in the Picos de Europa and then catching the overnight ferry home.
Riding to Morocco on your own motorcycle really is an unforgettable experience. We have designed this to be 100% on road so its suitable for everything from Harleys to Bergmans and all bikes in between. Views of the old City of Fes, Morocco!
Here we are overlooking the old city of Fes! This video shows an overview of this dynamic and cultural ancient city. The first university in the world was founded here!
Fez or Fes (Arabic: فاس faːs, Berber: ⴼⴰⵙ faːs, French: Fès) is a city in northern inland Morocco and the capital of the Fas-Meknas administrative region. It is the second largest city in Morocco after Casablanca,[4] with a population of 1.4 million (2014). Located to the northeast of Atlas Mountains, Fez is situated at the crossroad of the important cities of all regions; 206 km (128 mi) from Tangier to the northwest, 246 km (153 mi) from Casablanca, 169 km (105 mi) from Rabat to the west, and 387 km (240 mi) from Marrakesh to the southwest which leads to the Trans-Saharan trade route. It is surrounded by the high grounds, and the old city is penetrated by the River of Fez flowing from the west to east.
Fez was founded under the Idrisid rule during the 8th-9th century. It consisted of two autonomous and competing settlements. The migration of 2000 Arab families in the early 9th century gave the nascent city its Arabic character. After the downfall of the Idrisid dynasty, several empires came and went until the 11th century when the Almoravid Sultan Yusuf ibn Tashfin united the two settlements and rebuilt the city, which became today's Fes el Bali quarter. Under the Almoravid rule, the city gained a reputation for the religious scholarship and the mercantile activity. Fez was expanded during the Almohad rule and became one of the largest cities in the world during 1170-1180 with the estimated population of 200,000.
Fez reached its zenith in the Marinid-era, regaining the status as the capital. Numerous madrasas, mosques, zawiyas and city gates were constructed which survived up until today. These buildings are considered the hallmarks of Moorish and Moroccan architectural styles. Marinid sultans also founded Fes Jdid quarter, where newer palaces and gardens were established. During this time, the Jewish population of the city grew as well, with the Mellah (Jewish quarter) attracting the Jewish migrants from other North African regions. After the overthrow of the Marinid dynasty, the city largely declined and replaced by Marrakesh for political and cultural influence, but remained as the capital under the Wattasids and modern Morocco until 1912.
Today, the city largely consists of two old medina quarters, Fes el Bali and Fes Jdid, and modern urban area of Ville Nouvelle constructed during the French colonial era. The medina of Fez is listed as a World Heritage Site and is believed to be one of the world's largest urban pedestrian zones (car-free areas).[5] It has the University of Al Quaraouiyine which was founded in 859 and the oldest continuously functioning university in the world. It also has Chouara Tannery from the 11th century, one of the oldest tanneries in the world. The city has been called the Mecca of the West and the Athens of Africa, a nickname it shares with Cyrene in Libya.[6]

Lahcen bietet zudem Touren in weiteren Regionen Marokkos an.

Morocco unveils Africa's fastest railway line | Money Talks
Tourists and commuters can now travel across Morocco on Africa's first high-speed train. The LGV is a joint project between France and Morocco and halves the travel time between Casablanca and the coastal city of Tangier. There are also hopes it'll bring a much-needed boost to the economy, as Paulo Montecillo reports. For me on this, political economist Ismail Lagardien joins us from Cape Town, South Africa.

Thanks again for watching! And remember! The world's a noisy place... Make your words count!
P.S:
There's a few reasons why I wanted to make this into a series, so if you're curious, here's why.
1. I had nearly an hour of footage and I really didn't want it to go to waste trying to fit it all into a single video.
2. The places I'm exploring have such unique elements to them, and unlike my Spain and Portugal vlog, it just didn't make sense trying to smash Gibraltar and, say, Morocco into the same video when they're such incredibly different places and different experiences.
3. I'm super inspired by Shane Dawson's recent video series, and you may even notice that the extro was a little similar to his documentary style series. Very different and much simpler, but still - he was one of my inspirations for doing it this way.
4. And finally, I'm pretty strapped on time at the moment, so splitting this into a series gave me the time to make each section good, flex my editing and artistic inclinations, and not get totally overwhelmed with life. Sadly, YouTube isn't my day job - but if you want to help me have more time with my videos, consider supporting me on Patreon:
