My experience using public transport to get around the island of Sicily, Italy. It was a great trip but figuring out busses and trains had it's challenges. We went there in September of 2018.

Palermo Port Italy Walking to City Center (with music)
Today, we arrive in Palermo, Italy. Day 3 of our cruise on MSC Preziosa. From the cruise port, we take a long walk to the historic city center. Took about half and hour. Follow my review here -
How to travel from Palermo to Vulcano on the Aeolian Islands.
In September 2018, we flew to Palermo Airport, travelled by bus into the city and then caught the train to Milazzo and the boat to Vulcano. We had a great time on the Aeolian Islands.
There is a train from Palermo Airport into the city but it wasn't running when we arrived. Instead, we bought train tickets from the bus. There is a ticket desk in the main arrivals hall. To find the bus exit the airport and turn right, easy peasey.
The bus takes just under an hour to get to Palermo. It stops at a few places in the city and terminates at Palermo Central Train Station. Tickets for the train to Milazzo (port) can easily be purchased from a ticket desk or electronic multi lingual machine.
The train is fairly comfortable but there are no refreshments on board so take your own. Remember to validate your ticket in the machine before boarding.
The train follows a scenic coastal route passing through holiday destinations including Cefalu. We arrived in Milazzo about 2.5 hours later.
We were approached by taxi drivers outside Milazzo station offering to take us to the port and trying to convince us that the port is a looooooong way away. We didn't think so, and so we walked. It's about a 40/50 minute 5km brisk walk. We managed with our rucksacks and a baby in a trolley. If you can afford it, take the taxi. If you want an adventure and have time to stop for a coffee take a walk!
We travelled on the Siremar ferry. The boat was about to leave when we arrived at the port but the good folk of Siremar held it whilst I ran across the road and purchased our tickets. I swiftly ran back, the bridge was pulled up and we were away!
The voyage takes around 90 minutes. We later found out that there is a hydrofoil that takes less than 1 hour. The ferry is more roomy. The boats are cancelled in bad weather. That happened one day of out 12 night trip.
We stayed 9 nights on Vulcano and then three nights on Lipari. Some people though we were mad to spend so long on Vulcano as there isn't much to do. It worked well for us. We wanted to chill out and with a baby we couldn't be as adventurous as usual anyway. I did run up the Volcano alone twice before sunrise. It was spectacular and I'd recommend you do it too if you are fit enough. (See the time lapse videos on this channel).
We weren't as impressed by Lipari. Horses for courses. The town is much bigger almost urban but with good pedestrian streets full of shops and restaurants. If you had a car and could travel around the island it might have been better and many people love it there so don't miss it out.
The Aeolian Islands were lovely. Good food and beaches. Eating out is expensive. It cost about €50 for two main courses and half a litre of wine
We stayed at the Hotel Eros and couldn't recommend it enough. We travelled back to Palermo a reverse route as that in the video. We had two nights in the city at the end. Palermo is a really fab city.I think it's one of the best in Europe.
Happy travels!

What to do in Palermo, Sicily | Italy Travel Guide by Made of Journeys
Palermo is not only a surprisingly beautiful piece of Sicilian history, it's also it's main stop for amazing food, outstanding architecture and lovely people. Watch now!
Blog:
For millennia at the crossroads of civilizations, Palermo delivers a heady, heavily spiced mix of Byzantine mosaics, Arabesque domes and frescoed cupolas. This is a city at the edge of Europe and at the centre of the ancient world, a place where souk-like markets rub against baroque churches, where date palms frame Gothic palaces and where the blue-eyed and fair have bronze-skinned cousins.
Centuries of dizzying highs and crushing lows have formed a complex metropolis. Here, crumbling staircases lead to gilded ballrooms and guarded locals harbor hearts of gold. Just don't be fooled. Despite its noisy streets, Sicily’s largest city is a shy beast, rewarding the inquisitive with citrus-filled cloisters, stucco-laced chapels and vintage stores filled with the threads of faded aristocrats. Add to this Italy’s biggest opera house and an ever-growing number of vibrant, new-school eateries and bars and you might just find yourself suddenly, unexpectedly in love.
We hope you enjoyed watching our video about the contrasting city of Palermo. Please, give us your feedback in the comments session below!

Palermo - Italy
See the best accommodation Palermo is a city in Insular Italy, the capital of both the autonomous region of Sicily and the Province of Palermo. The city is noted for its history, culture, architecture and gastronomy, playing an important role throughout much of its existence; it is over 2,700 years old. Palermo is located in the northwest of the island of Sicily, right by the Gulf of Palermo in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The city was founded in 734 BC by the Phoenicians as Ziz ('flower'). Palermo then became a possession of Carthage, before becoming part of the Roman Republic, the Roman Empire and eventually part of the Byzantine Empire, for over a thousand years. The Greeks named the city Panormus meaning 'complete port'. From 831 to 1072 it was under Arab rule during the Emirate of Sicily when it first became a capital. The Arabs corrupted the Greek name into Balarm, the root for its present-day name. Following the Norman reconquest, Palermo became capital of a new kingdom (from 1130 to 1816), the Kingdom of Sicily. Eventually it would be united with the Kingdom of Naples to form the Two Sicilies until the Italian unification of 1860.
The population of Palermo urban area is estimated by Eurostat to be 855,285, while its metropolitan area is the fifth most populated in Italy with around 1.2 million people. In the central area, the city has a population of around 650,000 people. The inhabitants are known as Palermitans or, poetically, panormiti. The languages spoken by its inhabitants are the Italian language and the Sicilian language, in its Palermitan variation.
Palermo is Sicily's cultural, economic and touristic capital. It is a city rich in history, culture, art, music and food. Numerous tourists are attracted to the city for its good Mediterranean weather, its renowned gastronomy and restaurants, its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque churches, palaces and buildings, and its nightlife and music. Palermo is the main Sicilian industrial and commercial center: the main industrial sectors include tourism, services, commerce and agriculture. Palermo currently has an international airport, and a significant underground economy.[citation needed] In fact, for cultural, artistic and economic reasons, Palermo was one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean and is now among the top tourist destinations in both Italy and Europe. The city is also going through careful redevelopment, preparing to become one of the major cities of the Euro-Mediterranean area.
Roman Catholicism is highly important in Palermitan culture. The patron saint of the city is Saint Rosalia. Her feast day on July 15 is perhaps the biggest social event in the city. The area attracts significant numbers of tourists each year and is widely known for its colourful fruit, vegetable and fish market at the heart of Palermo, known as the Vucciria.

CAR RENTAL SICILY, ITALY - We’re on Another Road Trip!
What’s the best way to see Sicily? Hire a car!
We did a lot of research before going to Italy on how to get around, what is the cheapest mode of transportation and how good the public transport networks are. We found that travelling long distances (for example Rome to Palermo) the cheapest and easiest way is to get a coach. However, the best part about getting out of major cities is seeing the countryside and being able to stop in the little towns along the way. If you want to do this in Sicily then you really do need to hire a car.
Renting a car in Italy is very affordable. We hired a Fiat 500 for €17 a day, and that wasn’t even with a deal. It was a last minute straight from Hertz price, so we’re sure that you can get an even better price than that. Fuel can get quite expensive though, we were paying around €1.60 per litre, so just keep that in mind when you plan your itinerary.
What are the roads like in Italy?….Ah…..they vary. The motorways are excellent (as you should expect), main roads are normally decent (but can also be absolutely terrible), and smaller roads in and around the towns can get pretty rough (or just be completely collapsed, flooded and blocked off without a detour warning). Because of the pot luck situation with roads its a good idea to always have plenty of fuel and be prepared for reaching your destination later than expected.
While in Sicily we have booked several Airbnbs. Similar to Greece this was the cheapest accommodation option. There aren’t hostels outside of Palermo and Catania, hotels are limited and can be quite expensive as well. We found Airbnbs for around $35-$50 AUD per night for a house to ourselves. Staying in an Airbnb is another good way to save money because you can make your own food (providing you have a kitchen). Eating out in Sicily isn’t what we’d call expensive, but it’s generally above our normal budget. So we ate a simple breakfast at home, usually ate lunch out and then cooked at home. We also found a lot of the food available in Italy is not exactly healthy, so having dinner at home was our chance to have some veggies!
Something that took us by surprise and was definitely a spanner in the works - everything shuts down in the afternoon! Between 12pm and 5pm (depending on where you are, some places its 1pm to 4pm) all the shops and restaurants close down. Even some super markets close during this time. The only places we noticed were open are gelato and coffee bars. But a bonus is the roads are almost completely empty during this time and street parking is FREE! So we ended up going to towns during this time, parked for free and wandered around the area by foot in peace and quiet.

Following in the footsteps of Bălcescu in Palermo
To visit the former Hotel Alla Trinacria where Nicolae Bălcescu died, and Piazza Garibaldi from Piazza Marina, in the short time before leaving from Palermo to Catania, we used transport by moto ape (lapinu in sicilian). In Palermo is taking a fight to the tourist to do sit on the seat : Bee taxi cab drivers against drivers, drivers of cars against taxi drivers, taxi drivers Bee against coachmen of carriages. Ape (Italian bee, also known as Vespacar) is a pickup truck and a dreirädiges the Italian manufacturer Piaggio scooter mobile. The Ape has been made since 1947 in Italy and since the introduction of the limited edition of 2007 in India.
So, we went from Piazza Pretoria on Via Maqueda passing through: Piazza Bellini, Via Roma and finally on Corso Vittorio Emanuele almost to the end, where we entered the Piazza Santo Spirito and Foro Italico Umberto I. On this avenue we entered via Butera and so we came to the house no. 24 where was the Hotel Alla Trinacria and where Bălcescu arrived on October 17 1852 at 9 pm. after a journey of almost three days by boat Ercolano, coming from Naples. Bălcescu was housed at room no. 26 but his health deteriorated rapidly and in the evening of November 27 1852 he died. Two marble plaques on the facade, confirms the passage of Bălcescu and Garibaldi there.
We continued on via Butera, Corso Vittorio Emanuele up to Piazza Marina and Villa Garibaldi. Piazza Marina was designed by architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile between 1861 and 1864. Piazza Marina, had been used for Aragonese weddings, victory celebrations, and, unfortunately, public executions. In the villa there are busts that of Giuseppe Garibaldi, Rosolino Pilo, Giovanni Corrao, Raffaele De Benedetto, Louis Tukory. A bust of Nicholas Bălcescu was installed in 1961 in Piazza Marina (Giardino Garibaldi) of Palermo. The shock front is the inscription Nicola Balcescu grande storico e patriota romeno, morto of Palermo, April 29. 1819-28 nov. 1852, and on the left reads: Busto offerto dall'Accademia Popolare della Republica Romena in Occasione dello Principati Romen's Anniversario dell'Unità dei delle celebrazioni dell'Unità d'Italia - anno 1961 .
