Real Ale Trail drunks continue causing chaos in Marsden
Business owners in Marsden find the popular Transpennine Real Ale Trail is more bane than boon.
Popularised 10 years ago by the BBC's ‘Oz and James Drink to Britain’, the trail takes participants to 8 pubs between Stalybridge and Batley.
But in Marsden only the pubs find any profit, while locals and other businesses suffer the side-effects.
Shopkeeper of Bits and Pieces, June Barrowclough (70) says how peaceful everything was before: “We got a lot of visitors - families coming, ladies on their own. Having a cake and a coffee or a sandwich at lunchtime.
“It brought extra trade in, but they’ve all been put off now.”
On a Saturday – previously the busiest trading day – a few shoppers can be seen in the early morning, but the closer it gets to lunchtime (opening time for the pubs) the quieter the streets get.
Locals tell horror stories of drunks exposing themselves or urinating in the middle of the street.
More extreme cases include jumping over nearby canals and even barging into houses to harass the elderly.
Featured ale trail pub, The Riverhead Brewery, attempted to work with the police to reduce trouble in the past, but June says she’s seen very little improvement.
“They have stopped them dressing up,” she says, referring to the landslides of hen parties and stag-dos the town once saw attending the trail.
“But a lot of [the other pubs] won’t do it – it’s only The Riverhead that stops them going in.”
From mid-February to late-March, essential maintenance took place at Marsden’s train station. June notes that it’s been ‘quite peaceful’ during this time.
But now that the maintenance is finished, and summer is fast approaching, it seems it’s only a matter of time until disorder is restored.
