Trashigang, Bhutan
Video with images of a tsechu festival at Trashigang dzong in the east of Bhutan. The nearby town is perched between high mountains. In the past it was an important junction of eastern trade routes in the direction of Tibet. In the seventeenth century the first shabdrung incorporated the isolated eastern regions and united them with the rest of the country. He made Trashigang an administrative center. Since the late seventeenth century the entire eastern region was governed from here.
A side road leads downhill to Trashigang dzong. It is situated on a high promontory and overlooks a confluence of the Drangme river and the Gamri river. The dzong was built in 1668 by the third druk desi as spiritual and administrative center for the entire eastern region. At the beginning of the last century the dzong was destroyed by a fire. It was rebuilt in only three years. Unlike other dzongs the administrative offices and the monastic buildings face onto a single courtyard.
Trashigang dzong has a popular tsechu festival each year. During the festival the visitors sit close together along the edge of the courtyard or they stand in the galleries all around the courtyard to watch the symbolic dances. Among the visitors are Brokpa women from the regions of Merak and Sakteng. They walked several days on a small path along mountains and glaciers to visit the festival. Among all other visitors they wear distinctive clothes and speak a different language.
The tsechu festival lasts for several days. The dzong stages symbolic dances which are attended by a large crowd. The dancers are monks and laymen who depict stories of Buddhist saints fighting primitive spirits and demons. The visitors of the festival receive blessings when they watch a cham dance with its symbolic meaning. They become proficient in Buddhist doctrines and at the same time they are protected against bad influences.
During the festival atsaras or masked clowns with long red noses help and sometimes mock the dancers and singers. They amuse the visitors and at the same time keep a keen eye on order and discipline. They also collect money and gifts as a contribution to the festival. Each person who donates money gets an extra blessing with a phallus which the clowns carry on their body to keep away evil spirits.
The festival is a social event where people meet and have fun. During the festival there is a fancy fair or market outside the dzong. For youngsters this is perhaps the best occasion to flirt with each other. At the time of the festival everyone wears smart clothes and expensive jewelry. Poor people who do not have any smart clothes or jewelry rent them just for the occasion. The authorities use the festival for a public campaign to fight ignorance and disease by promoting education and health care.

Trashigang, Bhutan new thondrol
Video with images of a religious ceremony during the tsechu festival at Trashigang dzong in the east of Bhutan. The annual festival lasts for several days and starts each morning with the unfolding of a thondrol or huge thangka. On the last morning a committee prepares the unfolding of a new version of the thondrol. It depicts an image of guru Rinpoche a reference to Padmasambhava. He is regarded as the second Buddha who brought tantric Buddhism to Bhutan in the eighth century AD.
During the ceremony a committee unfolds the thondrol accompanied by a chorus of women singing religious chants, the sound of conch shell trumpets and gongs. A central coordinator shouts his commands into a microphone to smoothen the operation. Monks and devotees gather to witness this occasion and seek blessings. Before sunrise, the painting is rolled up and kept in the dzong before it is displayed again one year later.
The devotees wear traditional dress. The men wear a kho which is a coat down to the knees. It is asymmetrically closed with a kera or belt. The coat hangs wide over the belt and serves as pouch for all sorts of things like a purse and a dozum or knife. Under the kho the men wear long or short pants which depends on the temperature of the season. Traditional footwear is knee-high embroidered leather booths. A kabney or scarf over the left shoulder identifies a person's rank. White for example is for citizens and saffron is for the king and Je Khenpo.
The women wear a kira or jumper with two koma or round buckles at the neck to hold their dress together. The kira is fastened at the waist with a belt that may be of either silver or cloth. At the waist The jumper is usually a long rectangular piece of dress down to the ankles with geometric motives or Buddhist symbols. Under the kira they wear a wonju or silk blouse. On top of their dress they wear a toego which is a short jacket without buttons. They have a rachu or cloth sash over their left shoulder.

Trashigang town in the eastern part of Bhutan
This video shows the people of Trashigang Town.
Trashigang, The jewel of the east. Trashigang spans the easternmost corners of the kingdom, skirting up to the edge of Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh. It is the country's largest district, with an altitude ranging from 600m to over 4000m.
Trashigang town is set on a scenic hillside and was once a bustling trade center for merchants looking to barter their goods in Tibet.
Today it is the junction of the East-West highway, with road connections to Samdrup Jongkhar and then into the Indian state of Assam. Trashigang town is also the principle market place for the semi-nomadic people of Merak and Sakteng, whose unique way of dress stands out from the regular Bhutanese Gho and Kira.
