Scala - Basilica di Sant'Eustachio
Almost vertically above Amalfi and not far from Ravello, on the other side of the Dragon Valley, off the beaten track, surrounded by chestnut forests and terraces sloping down towards the sea lemon groves, lies the oldest town of the Amalfi Coast. Scala, which does not reach the mass tourism, offers peace and quiet to explore the numerous monuments in a natural setting, stunning views and long and fascinating history dating back to its beginnings in the fourth century AD. It’s the perfect place to escape from the crowds and bustle of the full season in Amalfi towns situated by the sea.

Travel Vlog Italy Amalfi Coast Positano Amalfi Ravello Salerno
This trip was amazing! The Amalfi Coast is so romantic and rich with history. Every glance is beautiful whether by road or by sea. Driving down via Mamma Mia is just a whole other experience. The windy streets, the cliff overlooks, flowers blooming everywhere, and stunning views - what's not to like? I walked around Positano for a while and enjoyed the shops. I also took a boat from Amalfi to get a good sense of the coast. The town also is very interesting although a bit touristy. When you go on top to Ravello, make sure to see the Villa Rufolo. There is a spectacular garden and the estate is charming. Apparently Richard Wagner composed his music in Ravello. After such a mesmerizing visit to the Amalfi Coast I also enjoyed an evening in Salerno. I met some wonderful people on this trip and was so fortunate to have such great company. Thanks everyone for checking out my channel! Come back soon for more!

'Amalfi Coast' - Italy by Laderzi´s Travels
AMALFI COAST
The Amalfi Coast, or Costiera Amalfitana in Italian, is a stretch of coastline on the southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula of Italy (Province of Salerno), extending from Positano in the west to Vietri sul Mare in the east.
The main town close to the Amalfi Coast is Salerno, the municipalities belonging to its coast are Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, Tramonti, Minori, Ravello, Scala, Atrani, Amalfi, Conca dei Marini, Furore, Praiano and Positano. Very close to the territory of the coast (near Furore and Conca dei Marini) is it situated Agerola, located in the Sorrentine Peninsula and belonging to the Province of Naples.
Renowned for its rugged terrain, scenic beauty, picturesque towns and diversity, the Amalfi Coast was featured in Positano (1953) by American writer John Steinbeck.
***
Amalfi is a town and comune in the province of Salerno, in the region of Campania, Italy, on the Gulf of Salerno, c. 35 km southeast of Naples. It lies at the mouth of a deep ravine, at the foot of Monte Cerreto (1,315 meters, 4,314 feet), surrounded by dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery. The town of Amalfi was the capital of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, an important trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 and around 1200.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Amalfi was a popular holiday destination for the British upper class and aristocracy.
Amalfi is the main town of the coast on which it is located, named Costiera Amalfitana, and is today an important tourist destination together with other towns on the same coast, such as Positano, Ravello and others. Amalfi is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
History:
Amalfi is first mentioned in the 6th century, and soon acquired importance as a maritime power, trading grain of its neighbors, salt from Sardiniaand slaves from the interior, and even timber, for the gold dinars minted in Egypt and Syria, in order to buy the silks of the Byzantine empire that it resold in the West. Grain-bearing Amalfi traders enjoyed privileged positions in the Islamic ports, Fernand Braudel notes. The Amalfi tables (Tavole Amalfitane) provided a maritime code that was widely used by the Christian port cities. Merchants of Amalfi were using gold coins to purchase land in the 9th century, while most of Italy worked in a barter economy. In the 8th and 9th century, when Mediterranean trade revived it shared with Gaeta the Italian trade with the East, while Venice was in its infancy, and in 848 its fleet went to the assistance of Pope Leo IV against the Saracens.

Ravello was founded in the 5th century as a shelter place against the Barbarian invasions which marked the end of the Western Roman Empire. In the 9th century an important town of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, an important trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 and around 1200.
In 1086 it was created as a bishopric see by will of the Norman count Roger Borsa. In the 12th century it had some 25,000 inhabitants. In 1137, after a first failed attack two years before, it was destroyed by the Republic of Pisa. After this event, it started a demographic and economical decline, and much of its population moved to Naples and its neighborhood.

Scala dei Turchi
- Also known as the Turkish Steps. It lies between two sandy beaches, and is accessed through a limestone rock formation in the shape of a staircase, hence the name. The latter part of the name derives from the frequent raids carried on by Moors.
Cala Rossa (Favginana Island)
- A hidden gem on the island. Crystal clear waters and cool quarry digs. So many dead Phoenicians washed ashore on the northeastern part of Favignana that the shoreline there acquired the name Red Cove (Cala Rossa) from the bloodshed (incorrect red from the red clay on the beach and not for the bloodshed).

Palazzo Verone Scala, Campania, Italy
Palazzo Verone is an historical house of medieval origin, evidenced by the beautiful frescos painted on its walls dating back to the seventeen century ( mentioned in: Touring Club Italiano). It lies in the medieval village of Pontone, located between the towns of Amalfi and Ravello. From every balcony and window you have a breathtaking panoramic view of the Amalfi Coast, the Gulf of Salerno from Paestum to Cape Licosa, the imposing Villa Cimbrone of Ravello and the terraced hills of the Valley of the Mills.
The Palace was owned by the influential and illustrious Verone family at the end of the XVIII century. The head of the family, Giovanbattista Verone, was the mayor of the village of Pontone. The Verone's were cross town rivals of another family, the D'Afflitto's, owners of what now are the ruins of the ancient Basilica of Saint Eustace, in Minuta. According to historical sources, the total destruction of this Basilic is attributed to the Verone family in a struggle for local political power.
Another interesting Verone family tale is depicted in the two oval frescos painted in the gateway of the palace, the first depicting skeleton figures and the second, enchained brigants. It's a curious story of a miracle, thanks to which the Verone family was saved by prayer from attack by brigands for the intercession of a purgatory souls' legion. It's a tale a (fattariello) which the current owner and manager of the Bed & Breakfast, Michele Criscuolo, deciphered details from local historical records of the time. Michele is always happy to further flesh out this fascinating tale for his guests.

Driving the Amalfi Coast (Positano, Amalfi and Ravello)
Those winding roads between Amalfi, Positano and Ravello make for some the most epic driving anywhere in the world. Like urban rally driving. Some GoPro, some hyperlapse, and a little time-lapse.
