EGYPT & JORDAN | Ep1: Solo Backpacking Egypt
Solo backpacking through Egypt in the first leg of my month long trip as I travel through Egypt & Jordan.
Egypt & Jordan are undoubtedly on most people's travel bucket lists, but I've always had the impression that the majority of people travel there on an organised tour.
So I wanted to give it a go by myself and see what it was like treating it like a normal backpacking trip, staying at hostel and booking everything on the go.
This first episode covers the 3 weeks I spent solo travelling around Egypt.
Starting out in Cairo, I visited the Great Pyramids at Giza as well as exploring Islamic Cairo.
Then I took the train down to Aswan, visited Abu Simbel before boarding a 2 day cruise on the Nile to Luxor.
At Luxor I visited the Valley of the Kings, Karnak and other temples.
Then I went snorkelling and scuba diving in the Red Sea at Hurghada, Sharm el Sheikh and Dahab.

We Tried Egypt Street Food | Must Eat Local Dishes in Cairo
Trying Egyptian Food in Cairo - it's our second day here in Cairo, Egypt and we thought we would head on out to try some of the local Egyptian and Middle Eastern Food.
To get our pallet ready we tried Ma'An Sulta (Salad water), before getting some prickly fruit from a street food cart. We then headed to Felfela, a famous restaurant here in Cairo to have some Turkish coffee, Shorbet 'ads (lentil soup), baba ganoush (eggplant dip), ful, besara and Betinjan Maqli.
On the way to our next restaurant we tried arabic coffee for the first time, hibiscus juice as well as some white Egyptian Sobia drink before trying some home cooked Bamya.
Before we tried the most famus Egyptian dish, we had some Baskote Yansoon as we made our way towards the end of downtown to try Koshari...I am not sure how we had space for desert but managed to squeeze in Konafa, Basbousa and more...we are officially full!

Exploring Egypt | Travel Safety Hacks | RoamerRealm
This video is Exploring Egypt | Travel Safety Hacks | RoamerRealm
I was in Egypt on a really spontaneous trip. While 'a spontaneous trip' can mean a lot of fun & adventure, it can also mean 'running into lot of scams' basically attribute to lack of awareness and research. In my case, I reached Egypt quite late at night by a ship. If you're getting in by a plane, the entry stamp is done at the airport itself, but for me, I had to go to the immigration office (which is open 24 hrs by the way) and get this stamp. Reaching there was quite a task in itself, multiple transport and even a ferry ride was required. The office itself seemed like a shady old fashioned building and right outside is where I had my first encounter with the local touts who wanted a small fee for getting the stamp done.
It was a weekend, so, lots of people were still out. Drinking tea, smooking sheesha hookah or just casual chit chatting is the idea of relaxing socializing over the weekend. I found the people friendly and some would even wanna click a selfie or just talk with you if you're up for it. In Cairo, you would find many people espeically youngsters who speak English, but in other cities, not so much.
Most hotels will have their own sightseeing tours arrangements or contacts. Unless you're someone who SPECIFICALLY wants a guided tour, I would say skip this and step out for a more authentic Egyptian experience.
Public transport, especially the Metro is very convenient and I used that the most. Uber is quite readily available and hassle free, but while using UBER do remember that there are certain sightseeing spots which don't allow taxis to go beyond a point. For example, when at the Pyramids, I found out that if I had taken a taxi then it could have taken me only to this particular Police checkpoint.
About taxi or any service for that matter, Always negotiate a price beforehand and pay up only at the end of the trip. It may sound silly, but also specify the currency. I heard a story where a taxi guy agreed for an amout of 40 for a trip but at the end of the trip, he wanted $40 instead of LE40. And then you don't have any option but to pay up. OR you could give him the 40LE and run really fast! Just kidding! Negotiate and clarify beforehand. Another thing about taxis, to make an extra buck, the drive may try to pick up a passenger or two (heading in the same direction) and make them sit on the front seat. This is not allowed.
Once at the Pyramid complex, I was approached by a lot of 'agents' who all claimed to be official and working with the government, even had an official ID card in a sling around their neck. Anyway, so if you're looking for a guide OR a camel ride, ask the official at the ticketing office and he will point you towards the official ones. I don't know the guide charges, but the camel ride costs 50LE for 30 mins. There are shops inside the pyramid complex but everything is made in China, so, you're better off buying stuff from proper markets in the Giza city center or better still, in Cairo. Also, carry some small bills as everything attracts a fee/tip. Someone helps you with a photo (even on a request) - tip! If you want a pic with a camel - you guess it, TIP!! Some one helped you with directions - tip! Someone offered you a taste of tea EVEN IF you didn't want it - tip! I soon realized that the better thing was to request assistance from other tourists.
Some of the camel ride guys also offer a conduct tour within the premises, of course, this happens at a crazy asking price AND if you negotiate, they may agree BUT they'll just stop in the middle of nowhere and say the price you're offering only gets you till here, you can either pay me the price I asked for OR get off and start walking. Obviously, in that moment, you don't have any other choice but to agree. By the way, it gets really hot in the afternoon, so, carrying a hat, sunglasses sunscreen lotion and drinking water would come in extremely handy.
Regarding clothing, I saw a many tourists who were dressed for summer and no one seemed to object. But then again, this is a Muslim country and my approach was to be safe than sorry. Regarding food, you can play it safe & dine at the Pizza Hut or KFC which are right across the pyramid complex. There are some restaurants within the complex as well, but I chose to dine at this one right next to the Pizza hut, I can't remember the name but the food was absolutely fantastic and really affordable & again, how often do you get to dine at a restaurant with THIS view?

Musical Adventures in Time Travel
Musical Adventures in Time Travel is a unique compilation of some of the very best tracks from my many albums which attempt to evoke the lost sounds & playing techniques of the lyres of antiquity. On this Musical Adventure in Time Travel, I attempt to recreate a lost vista of ancient landscapes, transporting the listener to a distant, ancient past. The journey starts in ancient Mesopotamia, though to ancient Egypt, ancient Greece and ancient Rome...
Our voyage through ancient landscapes begins in this video, with a journey back in time, almost 4000 years ago, to the cradle of civilization, to ancient Mesopotamia. The track featured on this album to transport us back to this ancient land, is my arrangement for solo lyre, of one of the oldest known written musical fragments so far discovered in History, in my performance of Dr Richard Dumbrill's interpretation of the 3400 year old Hurrian Hymn (Text H6) from ancient Ugarit in Mesopotamia (a clip of track 1)
In the next installment of this Musical Adventure in Time Travel, I attempt to recreate the musical landscape of ancient Egypt. I explore an evocation of the music of ancient Egypt, in my arrangements for solo lyre & archaic arched harp, of both traditional Egyptian folk melodies & in my performance of an improvisation on one of the actual known ancient Egyptian scales, as deciphered by the late Professor Hans Hickmann of the Museum in Cairo, from chironomy gestures. Chironomy is an ancient form of musical notation dating back to the 4th Dynasty (c.2500 BCE) whereby specific hand gestures represented specific changes in the pitch of a melody:
The improvisation on the minor pentatonic ancient Egyptian scale deciphered by Professor Hans Hickmann from ancient Egyptian chironomy, which features in this album, is my composition Ancient Harps of Kemet. Kemet is a transliteration of the actual ancient Egyptian word kmt, describing the land of Egypt itself, literally meaning black land -- describing the life-giving, dark fertile mud left behind each Spring after the annual flooding of the Nile.
Awe of the Aten also originally featured in my EP, The Ancient Egyptian Harp. The Aten was the ancient Egyptian word for the Sun Disc -- venerated in the new monotheistic worship of the Aten by the Pharaoh Akhenaten.
I then explore the ancient landscape of Biblical times, with my evocation of the Music of Ancient Israel, featuring a selection of tracks (some renamed for this compilation), originally heard on from albums, King David's Lyre; Echoes of Ancient Israel & King David's Harp.
The track I have entitled Exodus of the Israelites in this compilation, is my arrangement for solo lyre of the traditional Klezmer melody Odessa Bulgar -- first featured in track 10 of my album King David's Lyre; Echoes of Ancient Israel.
We then move on our Musical Adventure in Time Travel to recreate the landscape of ancient Greece. My composition Orpheus's Lyre: Lament for Solo Lyre in the Ancient Greek Phrygian Mode (originally released as an extended length single) was inspired by the timeless ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice - his lost love for which he forever yearns...
We then arrive in ancient Rome, with Nero's Lyre - originally released as an extended length single of the same title. In this composition, featuring once more, the beautiful just intonation of antiquity, I attempted to recreate the famous fabled lament the notorious Emperor Nero was alleged to have played on his lyre as he sang The Sack of Ilion, whilst he witnessed the Great Fire of Rome in 64 CE...
