Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town
The Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa is situated on the Atlantic shore, Table Bay Harbour, the City of Cape Town and Table Mountain.
Prince Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria, visited the Cape Colony harbour in 1860 as a sixteen-year-old Royal Navy Midshipman on HMS Euryalus. He made a big splash with the Colonials on this first-ever visit by a member of the Royal Family. The first basin of the new Navy Yard was named after him and the second after his mother.
The complex houses over 450 retail outlets, including fashion, homeware and curious, to jewellery, leather goods and audio-visual equipment. The V&A Waterfront is also still a working harbour, and fishing boats bring in fresh fish, and larger container ships are towed in by tugboats.
Features in the waterfront:
-Chavonnes Battery
-Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island
-Nobel Square
-Two Oceans Aquarium
-Breakwater Lodge (University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business)
-Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa
A Traditional south African Braai
Episode 5 of my South African solo adventure !
I’m finally ready to pack up all my things and get on the road ! but not before I finish my week off with a traditional south African Braai ( aka BBQ) I head back to my dear friend Rob and families home ( the people who picked me up from the airport and stayed with first day) I was greeted by his lovely family and his closest friends. I had bought a few outfits when my bags didn’t arrive so I cleaned up a bit for the occasion. The night was full of great food, wonderful company and a wee little whiskey n wine. It was the perfect way to end my time in Capetown…. Or so I thought it was the end….

Life On The Road, South Africa Safari Animals.
Every country in the world displays some diversity, but South Africa, stretching from the hippos in the Limpopo River to the penguins waddling on the Cape, takes some beating. It befits its position at the southern end of the world’s most epic continent, with more types of terrain than photographers can shake their zoom lens at. There’s the deserted Kalahari, Namakwa’s springtime symphony of wildflowers, iconic Table Mountain and Cape Point, Kruger National Park’s wildlife-stalked savannah (scene of the famous lion-buffalo-crocodile battle watched more than 75 million times on YouTube) and, running through the east of the country and into Lesotho, the Drakensberg. KwaZulu-Natal’s iSimangaliso Wetland Park alone has five distinct ecosystems, attracting both zebras and dolphins.
If you’re interested in another kind of wildlife, hit the nightclubs on Cape Town’s jumping Long St or sample African homebrew in a township shebeen (unlicensed bar). When it’s time to reflect on it all, do it over seafood on the Garden Route, curry in Durban’s Indian Area, a sizzling Cape Malay dish, or a braai (barbecue) in the wilderness – accompanied by a bottle of pinotage produced by the oldest wine industry outside Europe.

Life In Africa, On The Road In Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in southern Africa known for its dramatic landscape and diverse wildlife, much of it within parks, reserves and safari areas. On the Zambezi River, Victoria Falls make a thundering 108m drop into narrow Batoka Gorge, where there’s white-water rafting and bungee-jumping. Downstream are Matusadona and Mana Pools national parks, home to hippos, rhinos and birdlife.
Is it safe to travel to Zimbabwe? What's the currency in Zimbabwe? Do I need a visa for Zimbabwe? Planning a trip to one of Africa's less commercial countries brings up many important questions. Below we've gathered our knowledge and tried to answer the most frequently asked questions about Zimbabwe for our travellers.
Safety in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is generally a safe country to visit. As in any country, you need to be cautious and careful in the cities and major towns like Harare and Bulawayo. Tourist police in Victoria Falls have been a massive help in reducing the nuisance factor from touts and hawkers, and the national parks which most people visit on safari holidays in Zimbabwe experience little crime. In recent years, politics have caused great distress and damage in Zimbabwe, bringing an image of chaos and insecurity to mind. Whilst the situation in the country has vastly improved from the days of white-owned farm invasions and violent urban unrest, some political tensions and troubles prevail and you should always avoid large gatherings. We keep a close eye on developments in Zimbabwe, and always urge all of our potential travellers there to do the same – the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and BBC websites are good resources for current information.
Time in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe doesn't operate daylight saving time, and is two hours in advance of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+2) during the summer months, as well as during the winter months.
Currency in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe abandoned the now infamous Zimbabwe dollar in 2009 after years of record high levels of inflation. It has been using the US dollar as its currency ever since, the South African rand is also widely accepted. Credit cards are becoming easier to use in tourist and business hubs such as Victoria Falls, Harare and Bulawayo but many visitors will still favour cash over plastic when visiting Zimbabwe’s more remote areas.
Rather bizarrely, due to a lack of dollar and rand coins circulating in Zimbabwe, change in supermarkets and at petrol stations is sometimes given to customers in sweets or pens. As charming as some may find this quirk in Zimbabwe’s economy, it’s hardly a solid base on which to build a solid monetary policy. With that in mind Zimbabwe’s central bank introduced special coins into circulation in mid-December 2014. The coins, which are pegged to the US dollar, come in denominations of one cent, five cent, 10 cent and 25 cent. It’s hoped the introduction of smaller denominations into circulation will help further stabilise Zimbabwe’s economy – which should further help ordinary Zimbabweans return to a degree of normalcy.

Cape Point - Kayak fishing trip gone wrong...
Howsit all!
This is an old video that still gives me the chills to watch, this was recorded the 24 February 2017.
I was quite new to the sport and was fishing at simonstown in the early morning, after hearing reports of everyone catching fish at Cape Point, I decided thats where I'm going.
Arriving at Point and seeing everyone with amazing catches made me launch my kayak super fast and off I went.
In the haste of launching I didnt listen to the guys when they said the wind is due to pick up, I told them id be going just to the kelp (500m down the coastline)...
Well I ended up paddling the 6 or 7km to the Lighthouse where the wind picked up blowing NW which is bad news (blows you offshore)...
Took me 35minutes to get to the lighthouse and turning around it took me just on 2 hours to get back, non-stop paddling.
You can see at the end how I crumble with exhaustion.
And thus the reason I upgraded to fibreglass kayak.
Hopefield & Die Plaasmol
Hopefield is a settlement in West Coast District Municipality in the Western Cape province of South Africa on the R45 between Malmesbury and Vredenburg. The town is east of Saldanha Bay and Langebaan, 40 km southeast of Vredenburg and 120 km north of Cape Town.
The Dutch Reformed congregation (Zoute Rivier) was established December 1851, and the town was founded in 1852 on the farm Langekuil, it became a municipality in 1914. Named after two people who laid it out, Major William Hope, Auditor-General, and a Mr. Field.[4]
The Air Force Base Langebaanweg, 22 km west of the town, as well as the West Coast Fossil park 25km west from town, falls within town limits.
There are two schools in town, Hopefield Primary, presenting Gr 1-7, an entirely state-sponsored school and Hopefield High, presenting Gr 8-12, a semi-state school with minimal sponsorship from the government.
In earlier years, this now small town was considered the capital of the West Coast, with banks, filling stations and a multiple other shops and businesses. The only access to Vredenburg, Langebaan, and Saldanha were through Hopefield. With the re-routing of the R45 road, passing the town on the outside and the construction of the R27 (West Coast Road), the infrastructure gradually shrunk away.
Die Plaasmol Farm stall is 5km out of Hopefield on the R45 in the direction of Langebaan/Vredenburg. It has a family-friendly restaurant/coffee shop, bar, pet shop, curio/gift shop and a nursery. It's an ideal place to stop and enjoy a meal on route to the many attractions in and around Hopefield.

This hike is for the adventurers. Suicide Gorge is a full day trip (17km, 8 hours) of adrenaline pumping outdoor adventure in the scenic Boland Mountains. It’s for those who have no fear. Suicide Gorge is a wet hike, ideal for summer; enjoy a water wonderland with spectacular canyon scenery, waterfalls and huge jumps.
Hike up the rugged gorge, arrive at a series of rock pools and test your courage by kloofing, a combination activity of walking, swimming and jumping. The major excitement is jumping off the cliffs into the fresh water. Get ready to jump from huge heights; jumps range from 3 to 20 metres high.
Experience adrenaline rushes, waterfalls and mountain pools
If you are a fit, brave and a little wild, kloofing Suicide Gorge will be an unforgettable experience for you. Daring leaps of seven or eight metres down waterfalls are compulsory. You must be willing to swim in cold water and not be afraid of heights. Remember, once in, the only way you're going to get out of this section of the Riviersonderend Mountains is via some gravity-defying jumps and scrambles.
Important to know
Please only do this hike if you are a fit and experienced hiker. It is advised to go with someone who has done this hike before. The route can be dangerous in extreme weather conditions.
The route is open from 1 November to 30 April; for reservations
