Italy - Anti-Usury Train

The Italian Senate and an association of small businesses are
trying to stamp out the practice of loan sharking. The Senate's Justice Commission is pushing through a law limiting
interest rates on loans while the small business asaociation has
financed an anti-usury train which arrived in Rome on Wednesday
(23/2). The new law limits interest rates on loans to 50% higher than the Italy's median interest rate. It also sets stiff penalties for
transgressors. Small businesses and individuals have been paying up to 200% in interest on loans obtained from agencies and individuals, with no legal recourse.

Surely, we can not be indifferent to certain things that are going on right now - the NATO exercises that take place in Georgia, literally in the area where there was a conflict just recently. They can not make us happy in any way. They cause problems and tensions, and we told our partners openly about that. Nevertheless, these exercises are still being held. And I think they can do nothing to improve the European security.

STORYLINE:
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev expressed optimism on Saturday about advancing relations with the US during President Barack Obama's visit to Moscow in July even on divisive topics such as NATO's eastward expansion.
Medvedev again criticised the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation's ongoing military exercises in Georgia, which Russia defeated in a brief war in August, saying such drills were clearly provocative and threatened stability in the region.
He expressed hope, however, that he would have a fruitful discussion on security cooperation with Obama when he visits Moscow July 6-8.
I hope that in the course of our meeting we will be able to talk about these problems as well and give a new impulse to our contacts in this field, Medvedev said after a meeting with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.
Berlusconi said he was confident talks with Obama would encourage cooperation.
Medvedev has proposed to work out a new trans-Atlantic security pact between the US, Canada, the European Union, NATO and alliances of ex-Soviet nations.
Obama has said that such a proposal is worth exploring, part of the new US administration push for better ties with Moscow.
Russia and NATO recently started to improve ties frozen after Russia's war with Georgia in August, but tensions soared again over expulsions of diplomats and NATO exercises that began last week in Georgia.
