Treak Cliff Cavern
This video features a range of underground limestone features including stalagmites, stalactites and pillars in Treak Cliff Cavern, Castleton in the Peak District.
CASTLETON | Walk through Castleton, Peak District, Derbyshire, England
CASTLETON | A walk around the village of Castleton in the Peak District, Derbyshire, England ????????
The village of Castleton in Derbyshire is a village in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, England, at the western end of the Hope Valley on the Peakshole Water, a tributary of the River Noe, between the Dark Peak to the north and the White Peak to the south.
Lying in the lee of mysterious Mam Tor, locally known as the 'Shivering Mountain', Castleton is one of the most beautifully-situated villages in the White Peak.
Whether you approach through the dramatic limestone gorge of Winnats Pass or from the Hope Valley, you'll appreciate the fabulous views created by its location on the cusp of the Peak District's breathtaking limestone and gritstone landscapes.
Whatever the weather, Castleton has something to offer visitors of all ages at any time of year. If it's fine and you're feeling fit, climb the steep steps up to the atmospheric Norman ruins of Peveril Castle, completed in 1086 for William Peverel, a favoured knight of William the Conqueror.
Castleton is the only place in the world where the semi-precious stone Blue John, unique to the Peak District and Derbyshire, can be found.
Some of the finest examples - including the largest known single piece of Blue John, The Pillar, can be found in Treak Cliff Cavern in Castleton, where you can also explore a fairytale underground world of stalactite and stalagmites.
Like Castleton's other show caves, Treak Cliff was once a lead mine. Peak Cavern has the largest natural cave mouth in Europe - large enough for cottages and even an inn to be built inside in previous times. Nowadays the space it used for special events, including Christmas carol concerts.
Speedwell Cavern offers an underground boat ride to the eerie 'Bottomless Pit', while Blue John Cavern, opposite Mam Tor, is the deepest of the caves and also contains examples of Blue John.
You can buy jewellery crafted from Blue John in the village, and Castleton Visitor Centre, with its museum and visitor centre, is a mine of information. Fortify yourself in numerous cafés, tea rooms and pubs before heading off to tackle the Great Ridge Walk, one of the finest routes of its kind in the country.
Castleton is most definitely a recommended countryside walk with fresh air, great views of the caves, the castle and the various pubs, cafe's, restaurants and gift shops. A great day out

Castleton - a short history…
Castleton was founded after the building of Peveril Castle in 1086, the castle was built by William Peveril, son of William the Conqueror. There was possibly an Anglo Saxon settlement on the east side of the village near Hope as there is an embankment running through the village, and s shaped strip fields on the east side, known as furlongs. The village developed under the protection of the garrison and grew and prospered from this period. The population was made up of farmers, retailers, men at arms and others. The village was on the main packhorse routes and an important stopover in coaching days in later centuries. It was also an important lead mining and market village. The oldest part of the village is by the river, Peakshole Water near Cavern Walk. Along Back Street can be seen several folds where houses were built around 3 sides of the courtyard, which had a narrow opening onto the street, where animals were penned at night.
This picturesque village is now designated a conservation area and much of its history can be read in its layout and architecture.
Geology
Castleton is on the boundary of the northern gritstone ‘Dark Peak’, and the southern limestone ‘ White Peak’.
The ridge to the north marks the beginning of the gritstone / shale beds giving rise to the high gritstone moorland plateaux. The gritstone shale bands can be seen in the face of Mam Tor and the instability of the shale beds is illustrated in the massive landslip on the A 625 at Mam Tor.
The hills to the south of the village are ancient coral reefs made of carboniferous limestone and behind them is the massive limestone laid down in a warm coral sea. The cave and underground river systems contain spectacular formations. The joints and cracks have been mineralised and contain veins of lead, fluorspar, barytes and calcite.
In Treak Cliff hill, a very pretty form of fluorspar, only found in this area, can be seen in two show caves. It is known as Blue John and is mined to make jewellery, which is sold locally. The mineral crystals were impregnated naturally during the formation with hydro – carbons, possibly altered by latent radio-activity in the rocks, to give them an attractive blue and yellow banding.
There are 4 caves at Castleton accessible by guided tour. Treak Cliff cavern and Blue John cavern contain beautiful caves decorated with stalactites formations, and blue john stone. Peak cavern is the resurgence of a huge river system. In its enormous entrance are the remains of a rope-making walk. Speedwell mine is an old lead mine and visitors are taken along a flooded tunnel by boat.
This walk through Castleton starts outside the Swiss Cottage hotel and B&B and ends right outside the Castleton museum and visitor centre.

Treak Cliff Cavern Animation How Blue John Became
Hi there! I'm Mair, an animator and illustrator based in the city of Derby in the UK. I offer animated video, motion design and illustration services locally, nationally and internationally.
Treak Cliff Cavern is a site of special scientific interest in the Peak District National Park in England. It is the only place in the world where the mineral, Blue John, can be found. In 2017 Treak Cliff Cavern began work with the interpretation agency, inHeritage, to develop educational materials for the visitors of the site. As part of the project Mair Perkins Ltd Animation and Illustration created an animation and comic book to explain the history of the site to visitors. We successfully condensed over 300 million years into 4:16 minutes of video!
The video is designed to work silently at the visitor centre if needed so the audio track by Haynes Music Productions is purely music and sound effects.
If you'd like to learn more about this project, visit or to chat about an animation project you have in mind, contact me here:

Blue John (1963)
Castleton, Derbyshire.
The Harrison family have mined near Castleton for 200 years, but not for coal. They mine Blue John, a stone used for ornaments and jewels, named from the French bleu-jaune, after its yellow blue colouring. L/S of a valley in Derbyshire. M/S three people with mining helmets make their way to the mine entrance at Treak Cliff Cavern.
Inside they show where the seam of shining stone is revealed. They use chisels to break away pieces of rock. One of the team is a girl. They bring a bucket of rocket out to the surface and examine it in the daylight. There are shots of various pieces of Blue John ware, including a £1000 vase. There are more example of ornaments and jewellery in the shop and one of the family is seen working at a lathe, making a small jar.
Note: There are some brochures in the documentation file. See also CP 419 Cuts.
