Tree Trunk Gorge Mountain Bike Trail Guide Video, Great Lake Taupo, New Zealand
The Tree Trunk Gorge trail will take you on a picturesque journey through the Kaimanawa Forest Park. It passes through classic central North Island beech forest, across streams and rivers and over two impressive gorges as it tracks along the upper section of the Tongariro River.
A grade 4 trail, it is most suited to experienced riders and intermediate riders seeking a challenge. 7km long, the trail can be ridden as a point to point ride with pre-arranged shuttles providing transport; or as a 14km round trip if you’re using your own transport.
Getting There :
The trail is located within the Kaimanawa Forest Park, just an hour’s drive south of Taupo and 15 minutes south of Turangi. It is easily accessed via Kaimanawa Road, just off State Highway 1.
Car parking is available at the northern end of the trail, at The Pillars of Hercules; or at the southern end, off Tree Trunk Gorge Road. Alternatively there are shuttle services available from either Taupo or Turangi.
Starting from the northern end, the trail begins with a challenging climb for a kilometer before evening out to reveal beautiful river fords and wooden bridges as you ride up the river. The last part of the trail is made up of a steep technical descent followed by a challenging climb.
The track is best enjoyed in fairer weather conditions and be prepared as the river crossings can be cold during the winter.
Please note: there is only limited mobile phone reception on the trail. Upon reaching the end at the Pillars of Hercules, you can turn around and ride back to get the best of both worlds, or have your pre-arranged shuttle meet you there and return you to your car.

Tree Trunk Gorge
A mere 5 minutes off State Highway 1 is a picturesque spot that 99.999% of travellers on the Desert Road never see!
En-route down the 2018 National Aerobatic Champs I stopped in for a wee look...
Tree Trunk Gorge funnels the whole of the Tongariro River through a gap only a couple of feet wide and over a couple of waterfalls all visible from the road bridge above. For the more intrepid, there is a wee track down to water level.

Waipouwerawera Stream Track, Taupo [Ep#46]
Only opened in June 2018, the Waipouwerawera Stream track is now up there on the list of my favourite trails.
Over 4km of singletrack that starts in a state forest and then progresses into a flowing but narrow trail that is cut into the bank of the Waipouwerawera Stream framed by an abundance of native bush.
This is must do trail if you're riding at Taupo.

Tongariro River Trail Mountain Bike Trail Guide, Turangi, New Zealand
The Tongariro River Trail is a relaxing ride, along one of the North Island’s most popular rivers.
It is perfectly suited for families and casual riders seeking to explore the native bush and clear waters of the river, without having to ride a long distance.
The track is a grade 2 trail on mostly flat terrain, making it suitable for children and beginner riders to enjoy.
It’s a 15km loop track of undulating, yet comfortable ground, which will take a family a couple of hours to complete (or close to an hour for more experienced riders).

Waihaha Great Lake Trail goodness
This trail is stunning, not a complete walk in the park, especially if you choose to ride back to the cars. Take a day, a picnic, plenty of water and some friends and go enjoy a great ride.
