Richard Dawkins & Lawrence Krauss: Something from Nothing
Critically-acclaimed author and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and world-renowned theoretical physicist and author Lawrence Krauss discuss biology, cosmology, religion, and a host of other topics at this event entitled 'Something for Nothing'. This video was recorded at The Australian National University on 10 April 2012.
Richard Dawkins FRS is the Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford. Born in British colonial Africa, he was educated in England, where he now lives. He did his doctorate at Oxford under the Nobel Prize winning zoologist Niko Tinbergen, then was briefly an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1967 to 1969, after which he returned to Oxford, first as a Lecturer in Zoology, then Reader, before being elected to his present professorship.
He is the author of nine books: The Selfish Gene (1976, 2nd Ed 1989), The Extended Phenotype (1982), The Blind Watchmaker (1986), River Out of Eden (1995), Climbing Mount Improbable (1996), Unweaving the Rainbow (1998), A Devil's Chaplain (2003), The Ancestor's Tale (2004) and The God Delusion (2006). The God Delusion has sold more than two million copies in English, and is being published in 30 other languages. Dawkins is now editing an anthology of scientific writing for Oxford University Press, The Oxford Book of Modern Science Writing. In 2006, to promote the values of education, science, and critical thinking skills, he established The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science (RDFRS) which is now a registered charity in both the UK and USA.
Richard Dawkins has Honorary Doctorates of Literature as well as Science, and is a Fellow of both the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Literature. He has been awarded the Silver Medal of the Zoological Society of London, the Michael Faraday Award of the Royal Society, the Nakayama Prize, the Cosmos International Prize, the Kistler Prize, the Shakespeare Prize and the Lewis Thomas Prize.
Lawrence M. Krauss is a renowned cosmologist and science populariser, and is Foundation Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration, and director of the Origins Project at Arizona State University. Hailed by Scientific American as a rare public intellectual, he is also the author of more than three hundred scientific publications and nine books, including the international bestseller, The Physics of Star Trek, and his most recent bestseller entitled A Universe from Nothing.
He received his PhD from MIT in 1982 and then joined the Society of Fellows at Harvard, and was a professor at Yale University and Chair of the Physics Department at Case Western Reserve University before taking his present position. Internationally known for his work in theoretical physics, he is the winner of numerous international awards, and is the only physicist to have received major awards from all three US physics societies, the American Physical Society, the American Institute of Physics, and the American Association of Physics Teachers. Krauss is also a commentator and essayist for newspapers such as the New York Times, and the Wall St. Journal, and has written regular columns for New Scientist and Scientific American and appears regularly on radio and television. He is one of the few scientists to have crossed the chasm between science and popular culture, and is also active in issues of science and society. He serves as co-chair of the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, and on the Board of Directors of the Federation of American Scientists.
March 28, 2019 New England Fishing Report with Toby Lapinski
Be sure to follow the weekly fishing reports across New England at
I will start off this week’s video with the announcement about the April monthly issue of The Fisherman Magazine which is due out on newsstands, your mailboxes and online at We have a lot of spring options covered in this issue including blackfish jigging tips and how it has changed the fishery. We also tackle getting into your first striped bass of the year on jigs and how they can be fished throughout the water column from top to bottom. And what’s a spring issue without some talk of trout as the season opens in Connecticut and Rhode Island on April 13 which is just about 2 weeks away, and it is currently open in Massachusetts as there is no closed season in the Bay State. And be sure to give a look to the official 2019 Dream Boat Fishing Challenge feature for all the details on how you can win yourself a Brand New Steiger Craft boat and much, much more!
Looking to the weekend we have the final shows here in New England, but due to the conflicting schedule and limited staffing, we are only able to attend one, the 22nd annual Northeast Fishing & Hunting Show in Hartford, CT on Friday through Sunday. Visit The Fisherman Magazine at booth #104 immediately on your right as you enter the main doors to take care of all your new, renewed and gift subscriptions and take advantage of the great free gifts which you receive for signing up at a show. And while you’re there, be sure to check out some of the many free seminars and demos which run throughout the duration of the show from the likes of Crazy Alberto, Ralph Wilkins of Wicked Tuna, Bassmaster angler Paul Mueller, Mike Laptew the Diving Fisherman, Al Gag, Ron Arra and many more. I will also be doing my only seminars of the season on Friday at 3 PM in room 1, and Saturday at 2 PM in room 2. I’ll be covering the topic of hinting huge striped bass with eels in the surf. Check out for more details.
If you’re unable to attend the show in Hartford then you can check out the MSBA Sport Fishing Expo at the Wolves Den Sports Complex in Pembroke, MA on Saturday and Sunday. Again, The Fisherman Magazine will not be attending this show but we made special arrangements to have magazines delivered and they will be included in the backpack giveaways handed out at the door. You can find out more info on this show at
On the fishing side of things, holdover stripers are really starting to feed. At the show in Providence over the weekend I spoke with anglers in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut who all report a good bite already in the tidal rivers. The guys at the Housatonic Lure Company have been reporting solid action down on their river in Connecticut, and it should only serve to get better with each passing day!
With cod fishing pretty much off the table for the last week, trout fishing is the other game in town. The season remains open year-round in Massachusetts, and in Connecticut you can fish the TMA’s which each have localized special regulations and restrictions so be sure to verify the status before making a cast. In preparation for Opening Day in CT, the Fish & Wildlife department has been busy stocking trout and there are sure to be some happy anglers come April 13!
Remember that if I didn’t get to your species or location of choice this week, you can always check out the complete fishing reports from Maine to the Mid-Atlantic at
Certified Arborist Mike Cross Tallahassee Work Climb Demonstration
Mike Cross owner of ArborWorks, LLC Tallahassee Tree Care and Removal demonstrates the work climb event of the I.S.A. Tree Climbing Championship. This is a sloppy run because the fans were cheering me on for speed. Should this have been a real competition, i would have lost points for the sloppy run, however, it was fast. This type of event teaches how to efficiently move around in a tree for the tree trimmer to trim limbs that need removal from the tree.
