Smoking Anak Krakatau Day 2 - The Hike
Smoking Anak Krakatoa Day 2 - The HIKE (23-25/03/2012) - write up by Alex KL Hiking
24th April 2012
We had to get up early morning to catch our speedboat to Anak Krakatau. We hopped in the same minivans but this time they brought us to a very secluded tiny harbour where the speedboats were waiting for us. Every boat took five to six passengers and I was unlucky enough to pick one without a cabin. Because of the windy weather conditions, the sea was quite rough and waves up to three feet bashed continuously against, over and in the boat. Sometimes I felt as if we were part of a stunt team as on several occasions I saw our boat being completely lifted out of the water only to be catapulted into the next foaming wave. No wonder that some of our participants were not feeling well the moment we arrived at Anak Krakatau. The constantly gushing salt water made not only my eyes sore but I was soaking wet, except my waterproof hiking boots and I wanted to keep them dry at all cost. Didn't know that the cost would be that high... In an attempt to avoid the upcoming waves at the beach I hit one of the propellers of the speedboat's engine. Now I have knocked my knees and legs before on several occasions during hikes, but this time the pain was extremely intense. Heri who had seen what happened ran towards me and applied some Indonesian oil around the gall, but the pain didn't subside.
The volcano itself still grows an average of five inches per week and can be considered as a real active one. Last major eruptions date from April 2008, May 2009, November 2010 and November 2011. The hiking surface felt warm but certainly not hot and absolutely not such that it would melt the soles of our shoes. The first part of the climb was for some hikers already enough to loose all the juice in their muscles. A steep climb in dark warm sand, trying to work your way up while gravity was pulling/laughing you down again. One step up and gliding two steps down. It became slightly easier if you were able to use the footprints of the hiker in front of you as a kind of steps of a stairs. However after a few extra shoes went through it, the sand became so loose that the footprint disappeared and became a black powdery circle. We reached the relatively flat section upon which the real volcanic mountain of lava stones and ashes was erected. The gradient here was even steeper and almost every step up brought you another half step down again. The use of our hands was absolutely necessary, not only to climb up, but also to keep our balance. I assume that about ten of us started to climb our way to the top after some chitchat with the guide, completely at our own risk of course. Because of the sulfuric gases which were blown down the volcano would hinder us during our attempt, we moved our terrain of action more to the right so we could breathe in pure air. By doing so we lost some valuable time because in the confusion which arose shortly after, it was not clear anymore whether we really could continue our climb without being sanctioned. The hikers below us who were only watching us during the climb were exposed to the sulphuric fumes and maybe they assumed that we were also. Whistles were blown and voices were shouting and although some said they encouraged us in our climb up, all of us up there could only hear come down... With pain in our heart and feeling frustrated because of the unilateral change of agreement, we abandoned our attempt to summit and descended, only to join the majority of the hikers back to the base of the mountain.

Krakatoa Volcano Island Trip from Hawaii Club Bali in West Java, Indonesia
If you are able to make it to West Java. Be sure to book a few nights at the Hawaii Club Bali Resort on the west coast. While you are there take the opportunity to explore the islands of Krakatoa, the active volcano and scene of one of the most amazing events of recent history. Hike the slopes of the active Anak Volcano, Snorkel off the coast of Papa Krakatau, and enjoy a meal prepared for you by the great chefs at Hawaii Club Bali. It really is a great chance to take a wonderful day trip in paradise to an amazing island.
Krakatau is the scene of the loudest eruption ever recorded. in 1882 the large volcano blew its top, changing the global temperature by 2 degrees, sending a shockwave traveling around the earth 7 times, and creating a sound that could be heard by the human ear over 3,000 miles away!
Krakatoa volcano explodes: spectacular huge eruption two months before 2018 tsunami
Krakatoa volcano explodes in a spectacular large eruption with a small lateral blast on 17 Oct 2018. The place shown in this video no longer exists: on 22 Dec 2018, the summit cone of Anak Krakatau island, seen here erupting, collapsed into the sea in a massive landslide, triggering a devastating tsunami that killed hundreds of people.
Video was taken during a VolcanoDiscovery expedition to Krakatau from 13-20 Oct 2018. In the afternoon of 17 Oct, a particularly violent explosion occurred as lateral blast that excavated a pit crater beneath the southern lid of the crater, at the same location the September lava flow had overspilled from the crater. By 19 Oct, this new pit had merged with the main crater, enlarging it.

시간여행자 ‘인류의 대이동’ E22 [크라카토아] 4. 찾았다! 자카르타 최강 길거리 맛집 Exploration of Krakatoa, the volcanic island

Krakatoa trip 2019
Visiting the most dangerous volcanic island in Indonesia ????????
Krakatau
Footage from our recent trip to the Krakatau Volcano. Includes drone footage of the island and the volcano (no lava at this time sadly) and GoPro footage of some of the colorful fish you can find snorkeling the nearby reefs. This is Anak Krakatau the child of Krakatau (or Krakatoa if you want to use the false spelling propagated by English language newspapers around the time of it's 1883 eruption) the most infamous volcano in recorded history. When the island which sits in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra exploded 134 years ago it sent forth a tsunami that killed over 30,000 people and created a noise so loud that it was heard as far away as Australia. A hundred years ago this island didn't exist and it has been growing taller every year. It's also a great spot to go snorkeling and camping on the beach... when it's not erupting. In fact it's my favorite weekend getaway from Jakarta.
