From Nine Miles to Trench Town: How three Jamaican communities joined Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica
The Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica Model Community project was launched in 2016 by the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) with funding from the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF). Over the past two years, the NDUJ model community project has seen JET delivering targeted public education in three Jamaican communities with the aim of improving the way their solid waste in managed.
The Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica Model Community project began in two distinctly different Jamaican communities, Trench Town in Jamaica’s capital city, Kingston and Nine Miles, in the countryside of St. Ann. In 2017 Wisynco joined the Clean Coasts Project and Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica as its major corporate sponsor and Lakes Pen, a satellite town bordering Portmore in St Catherine was added as the project’s third target community.
Throughout the course of the project JET has visited each participating community several times to speak with residents and see first-hand the solid waste issues. In October 2017, JET hosted stakeholder meetings in each community with residents, representatives from the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) and project partners Wisynco and TEF. In January 2018 JET revisited each community to determine whether the community meetings and bins had resulted in any changes in the way their garbage is being managed.
Throughout the project JET has been accompanied by a crew from Phase 3 Productions on visits to the communities who have been documenting solid waste challenges, and Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica project activities on film. The short documentary film From Nine Miles to Trench Town: How three communities joined Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica, produced by JET and Phase 3 using this video footage, chronicles the experiences of these three distinctly different Jamaican communities as they work with JET to improve the way their garbage is managed. JET hopes that the lessons learned from the project which are highlighted in the film can be used by other Jamaican communities to address their own garbage management challenges #nuhduttyupjamaica
