190. A Special Guest aboard the narrowboat on the Trent & Mersey canal
Got a question? Please read this first:
When I reached the town of Stone in Staffordshire, I paused to pick up a special guest - Jasmin from YouTube channel This Narrowboat Adventure (link below). Battling the mighty forces of wind, rain and vicious swans, we made it through the town until calling it quits for the day.

Daytrip to Derby (AymanTUBE Vlogs)
Join me on my ongoing quest to visit every city in the UK! This time, I head down to Derby on a rather lengthy bus journey through the Peak District, speeding down the country roads and enjoying the views along the way, with plenty to enjoy! Plus, I get to try out the new Subway Pizza Sub as a little bonus!
For those that wish to use the buses I rode, it's £7.50 for a Peak Plus valid on most High Peak bus services (Transpeak only as far south as Matlock) which should be sufficient for exploring the Peak District towns of Buxton, Bakewell and Matlock but £12.50 for a Peak Plus Extra if you wish to travel all the way down to Derby; alternatively, you could have a break in Bakewell or Matlock with the standard Peak Plus on the TP and then get a Trent Barton ZigZag day ticket on the 6.1 to Derby afterwards, which should allow you to travel further afield to Nottingham on the Red Arrow express coach. Skyline 199 goes from Manchester Airport and Stockport to Buxton via all villages and towns inbetween and TP is Buxton to Derby via Bakewell, Matlock and Belper.
To those that ask why I didn't just take the train, (1) it's a lot more expensive at £28 return, (2) the bus station in Derby is a much better location in the city than the train station and (3) I wanted to see the heart of the Peak District and its picturesque towns. I might consider a Derbyshire Wayfarer next time though.

Trent & Dove Housing; Learn it, built it, Live it (20/12/13)
n June 2012, Trent & Dove Housing launched an innovative new apprenticeship scheme where 4 apprentices from Burton got the opportunity to learn a trade, build their own home and get a job with local building contractors, Harvey and Clark.
The scheme is called 'Learn it, Build it, Live it' and is about to complete it's first cycle with the 4 apprentices set to move into the homes they have built themselves in January 2014.
For the last 12 months the apprentices have been spending time at Burton and South Derbyshire College and on site at the Grange Steet Development.
The apprentices vary in age from 18 -- 35 with the older apprentice in particular having a really interesting back story.
Trent & Dove believe their new approach to self-build housing, and apprenticeships, is something that could be rolled out nationally. What makes the scheme so different is that it can target the unemployed, and offer a paid employment with the a local contractor. The project is set to finish in January 2014.

Trains at Carlton on Trent, ECML | 26/05/18
A busy and warm visit to Carlton on Trent situated on the East Coast Mainline during the afternoon of Saturday 26th May 2018. We were planning here for around 2 hours or so but i thought we could make a stop at another location on the way back.
Carlton on Trent info:
Carlton-on-Trent is a small village and civil parish in England, located between the River Trent and the A1 road near Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire. The population of the civil parish was 228 at the 2001 census increasing marginally only to 229 at the 2011 census.
The village forms part of the Newark and Sherwood district, it is also served by a Parish Council.
The village has several entries in the Domesday Book, mainly for the year 1086 relating to the Records of the Exchequer, and its related bodies, with those of the Office of First Fruits and Tenths, and the Court of Augmentations. Associated names for these entries include The Earl Tosti and the Man of Rodger De Bully.
Carlton Mill was a six-storey brick tower windmill built before 1821. The tower is still standing, as a shell without floors, to a height of 60 feet.
Old station:
Carlton on Trent railway station was a railway station that served the village of Carlton-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England from 1850 to 1953 on the East Coast Main Line.
The station opened in 1850 by the Great Northern Railway. The station was situated north of Newark North Gate and south of Crow Park station. The station closed to both passengers and goods traffic in 1953.
