Berlin, Germany - Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park
This facility, which covers 10,000 meters, was designed by Soviet architect Yakov Belopolsky and was established in early 1949. In addition to being a memorial, it also serves as a cemetery for 5,000 Soviet soldiers killed during the Battle of Berlin in April-May 1945. It is a memorial for the approximately 80,000 Russian soldiers killed during the conquest of Berlin and is also the largest anti-fascist memorial in Western Europe.

Treptower Park ( Berlin - Germany ) is a really beautiful park. Great for walking and enjoying a little time away from the city. Lots of green space.
Treptower Park ( Berlin - Germany ) is very easy to reach via public transport. Explanations are provided in German, English and of course Russian. It's a nice walk and you can see all the communist propaganda at its best.
Treptower Park ( Berlin - Germany ) is a great place to go by bike on a sunny day. The Soviet Memorial is really impressive, from the architecture to the central sculpture and the 'sarcophagi' leading up to it with bits and pieces of history.
Berlin - Germany , Germany’s capital and cultural center, dates to the 13th century. Divided during the Cold War, today it's known for its art scene, nightlife and modern architecture, such as Mies van der Rohe’s landmark Neue Nationalgalerie. Reminders of the city's turbulent 20th-century history include its Holocaust Memorial and the Berlin Wall's graffitied remains. Its 18th-century Brandenburg Gate has become an iconic symbol of reunification.
Berlin - Germany is an edgy city, from its fashion to its architecture to its charged political history. The Berlin Wall is a sobering reminder of the hyper-charged postwar atmosphere, and yet the graffiti art that now covers its remnants has become symbolic of social progress. Check out the Weltzeituhr (world time) Clock, topped by a model of the solar system, then turn back time by dining at the historic Zur Letzten Instanz, a 16th century restaurant that was frequented by Napoleon and Beethoven.

Places to see in ( Berlin - Germany ) Treptower Park
Places to see in ( Berlin - Germany ) Treptower Park
Sunbathing on the lawn or a trip on a pedal boat. Treptower Park means summer in Berlin down by the river. The wide, four-kilometre-long riverside path starts at Treptower Hafen, where pleasure boats invite you to take a trip along the Spree. The path carries on past lovingly kept houseboats and then the view opens up to the Stralau peninsula, the Insel der Jugend and the people relaxing in pedal boats on the river.
Treptower Park is the perfect place for a day out. In 84 hectares of greenery you can stroll along the riverside path, across sunny lawns, past the rose garden and along the shady avenues of plane trees. When it was opened in 1888, Treptower Park was a novelty for the time, a public park open to all the city’s inhabitants. Gustav Meyer, a pupil of Lenné, designed the park in the English style.
Walking, jogging, cycling – whatever pace you like to keep up, Treptower Park has the right routes for you. The riverboat jetty is a good place to start your tour of the green idyll. Continuing along the path by the Spree you come to Haus Zenner, a traditional pub with a large terrace. Slightly further on is the Insel der Jugend, a small island that you can reach by crossing an old bridge called the Abteibrücke, where you can hire a pedal boat, a rowing boat or even a barbecue boat. Just before you get to Plänterwald, you can take a break at the Klipper, a restaurant on a sailing ship where you can enjoy some cake or a smoked fish. This is also where the red seaplane takes off in summer, offering an aerial view of Treptower Park and Berlin. If you’re on a bike, carry on along the riverbank past Plänterwald and the former Spreepark amusement park to the ferry. This takes you to the other side of the Spree, where the cycle path carries on towards Müggelsee.
If instead of starting off along the riverside path you cross the street called Alt-Treptow, you first come to a huge grass area for playing and sunbathing. In the middle of the park is the Soviet War Memorial, which was built after the second world and is a cemetery for 5000 Soviet soldiers. Right next to it is the Archenhold Sternwarte, an observatory with the world’s longest refracting telescope, where you can take part in night-time stargazing away from the city’s light pollution. Not far from the observatory and the war memorial is what used to be the Spreepark amusement park, where you can still see the big Ferris wheel. The former funfair is now being converted for a new cultural use. There are guided tours of the mysterious, closed site at weekends.

The Soviet War Memorial is a war memorial and military cemetery in Berlin's Treptower Park. It was built to the design of the Soviet architect Yakov Belopolsky to commemorate 7,000 of the 80,000 Soviet soldiers who fell in the Battle of Berlin in April–May 1945. It opened four years after World War II on May 8, 1949. The Memorial served as the central war memorial of East Germany.
The monument is one of three Soviet memorials built in Berlin after the end of the war. The other two memorials are the Tiergarten memorial, built in 1945 in the Tiergarten district of what later became West Berlin, and the Soviet War Memorial Schönholzer Heide in Berlin's Pankow district.
Together with the Rear-front Memorial in Magnitogorsk and The Motherland Calls in Volgograd, the monument is a part of a triptych.
*HISTORY*
At the conclusion of World War II, three Soviet war memorials were built in the city of Berlin to commemorate Soviet deaths in World War II, especially the 80,000 that died during the Battle of Berlin. The memorials are not only commemorative, but also serve as cemeteries for those killed.
A competition was announced shortly after the end of the war for the design of the park. The competition attracted 33 entries, with the eventual design a hybrid of the submissions of the architect Jakow S. Belopolski, sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich, painter Alexander A. Gorpenko and engineer Sarra S. Walerius. The sculptures, reliefs, and 2.5 meter diameter Flammenschalen (flame bowls) were cast at the Kunstgießerei Lauchhammer in 1948. The memorial itself was built in Treptower Park on land previously occupied by a sports field. The memorial was completed in 1949. The stones and granite that were used in the construction came from the demolished New Reich Chancellery.
Around the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall, unknown persons vandalized parts of the memorial with anti-Soviet graffiti. The Spartacist party claimed that the vandals were right-wing extremists and arranged a demonstration on January 3, 1990, which the PDS supported; 250,000 GDR citizens participated. Through the demonstrations, the newly formed party stayed true to the communist roots of its founding party, and attempted to gain political influence. PDS chairman Gregor Gysi took this opportunity to call for a Verfassungsschutz (Constitution Protection) for the GDR, and questioned whether the Amt für Nationale Sicherheit (Department of National Security, the successor of the Stasi) should be reorganized or phased out. Historian Stefan Wolle believes that Stasi officers may have been behind the vandalism, since they feared for their jobs.
As part of the Two Plus Four Agreement, Germany agreed to assume maintenance and repair responsibility for all war memorials in the country, including the Soviet memorial in Treptower Park. However, Germany must consult the Russian Federation before undertaking any changes to the memorial.
Since 1995, an annual vigil has taken place at the memorial on May 9, organized by (among others) the Bund der Antifaschisten Treptow e.V. (Anti-fascist Coalition of Treptow). The motto of the event is the Day of Freedom, corresponding to Victory Day, a Russian holiday and the final surrender of German soldiers at the end of World War II.
