360 Degree: Tretower Castle, Wales, U.K
A short 360 degree video and tour of Tretower Castle, in South Wales, United Kingdom, which I visited in July 2017 (when I first purchased my 360 degree camera, so my skills and knowledge of taking 360 degree footage was not so good then). Accompanied to free music downloaded from YouTube (no musical attribution required).
Here is a brief history and information about Tretower Castle that I discovered on the internet:
'The castle sits in a strategic position on the north bank of the River Usk. The remains that are visible today date from the 13th century, but the original castle on the site was a Norman motte and bailey castle, a large earthen mound topped with wooden defences. It was built during the Norman conquest of the ancient kingdom of Brycheiniog, when powerful Norman nobles settled in Brecon and the surrounding area to establish their control.
This wooden castle was rebuilt in stone in the mid 12th century. A shell keep was built, a hall and solar were erected to the south-west side of the motte and a kitchen was built at a slightly lower level.
The structure was extensively remodelled in the 13th century, when the great tower was built. The tower has three storeys, each with a single room with a fireplace and a window. The foundations of the tower contain a basement.
Tretower Castle was not only for defence. The quality of the ornamental stonework exceeds what is required for defensive purposes alone. For some of its history, this castle was a prized domestic residence and a status symbol.
By 1400, the domestic residence had moved to Tretower Court, but the castle survived and continued to be used as a military fortress in times of war, such as during Owain Glyn Dwr's uprising.'

The White Lady Ghost..
It is believed that a ghost known as the “White Lady” can be spotted walking along the balcony and across the courtyard, she’ll then stop and stand staring out to Chepstow. In the female quarter of the bed chambers some people have also said to have felt very cold and like there was a presence in the room.
It is believed the ghost does this as she is still waiting for her husband Roger Vaughan to come home to her. The tragic history goes that Roger Vaughan was beheaded, after being captured by his rival Jasper Tudor during the War of the Roses. Leaving the “lady in white” known as Lady Margaret, to live a lonely life alone and forever waiting in Tretower Court.
It was William Herbert who gave Tretower to Roger Vaughan.
In the 1450s, Sir Roger Vaughan began to build a handsome stone manor house,
The famous writer and poet Henry Vaughan was the nephew of the owner of Tretower and often visited the manor.
The building passed out of the hands of the Vaughan family and became a farm.
Ghost ratings and Spooky experience:
Main Bed Chamber
A woman has regularly been seen pacing in here and walking out of here on to the gallery.
A woman has also been seen sitting by the windowsill – all the other sightings of the woman around the house have described her as anxious, when she is seen by the window, people have mentioned that she seems very calm and peaceful – is this a different woman?
People feel very uneasy in this area.
One ex member of staff refused to come up here at all, even if accompanied by someone else.
Bedroom 2 – Opposite Main Bed Chamber
The ghost of a woman has also been seen in here. She is described as wearing white with green eyes. She is said to be anxious but not aggressive.
A visitor once came back several times as she was worried about the woman in white.
A rigger from a film crew who were filming here recently saw her and refused to return to the area alone.
Current staff speak of feeling very uneasy in the area around the bed chambers, gallery and the stairs leading up there, they feel that there is something there.
Gallery/Battlements
A woman in white is seen pacing up and down here and anxiously looking out over the battlements as if looking for someone to return.
Courtroom
There is a bricked up door to the outside where it’s thought that the public were brought in when the building acted as a ‘Lord of the Manor’ court. It’s also thought that it acted a Judge’s Chambers. In later years the building also acted as a farriers.
A little boy has been seen sitting by the door of the courtroom.
Oppressive feelings are felt in here.

tretower castle
Tretower (Welsh: Gastell Tretŵr[1]) was founded as a motte and bailey castle. In the 12th century, a shell-keep was added to the motte. By c.1230 a tall cylindrical keep was added to the inside of the shell-keep and the space between was roofed over. At this time the earlier bailey was walled in stone and provided with cylindrical corner towers. In the early 14th century residential buildings were constructed away from the original fortifications forming today's Tretower Court. Over time the lords of Tretower favoured the more luxurious Court and the castle fell into disuse.
Description of the castle[edit]
Tretower Castle - From a survey in the beginning of the 6th century
The castle is roughly triangular in plan, with the motte and keep assemblage occupying the western corner. The 12th century shell-keep is an irregular enclosure with a gate-tower on the line of approach from the bailey. In the centre of the shell stands the tall cylindrical 13th century keep. The keep is of three stories, with an original entrance at first floor level, above a strong, slanted batter or talus. The top of the talus is marked by a decorative string-course of stone. The keep is a rare example of a cylindrical keep in the British Isles. Interestingly the surrounding region has a number of examples of this type, for example at Skenfrith, Bronllys and Pembroke. The Tretower keep and the others share similarities with contemporary French models such as Dourdan.

Castles of King Edward I - Northwest Wales
Second part of a collection of visits to some notable castles in the picturesque landscape of Northwest Wales. The castles were usually built close to the coast for easy supply purposes and upon prominent rocky outcrops giving panaramic views over the coastline. Smaller castles existed inland that were built by the Welsh Princes and subsequently taken over, decommisioned or expanded by King Edward I. Most castles in this area are maintained by CADW, the Welsh Historic Monuments Service and are well worth visiting.
