Belle Fourche - South Dakota
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick Regan, Maggie, and Kate made a stop in Belle Fourche to stand in the center of the US. Belle Fourche South Dakota is the geographical center of the United States and home to the Black Hills Round-Up. The city of Belle Fourche established the tri-state museum that features antiques and memorabilia from a by-gone era. Adjacent to the museum is a park, including picnic tables, a large grass area, flags from all 50 states, and a monument marking the center of the United States. Belle Fourche is located in northern South Dakota in the Black Hills, just north of Spearfish Canyon. Cheap Family Travel enjoyed a nice picnic lunch and visiting this uniquely special place.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Humans have inhabited the area for several millennia, with the Sioux becoming dominant by the early 19th century. In the late 19th century, European-American settlement intensified after a gold rush in the Black Hills and the construction of railroads from the east. Encroaching miners and settlers triggered a number of Indian wars, ending with the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890.
2. They don’t call it the middle of the map for nothing. Belle Fourche, South Dakota, is federally recognized as the geographic center of the United States. While you can take a picture standing on top of the marker located adjacent to the Tri-State Museum, the actual center of the nation is found nearly 21 miles north of Belle Fourche. You’d have to do a bit of trespassing and fence-hopping to find the real deal, though, so let’s call the marker off 5th Ave close enough.
3. South Dakota’s most famous landmark is Mount Rushmore National Memorial, a larger-than-life sculpture that was carved into the side of a granite mountain in the Black Hills between 1927 and 1941. Constructed to attract tourists to the remote area, it features the faces of four U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Although each awe-inspiring head is 60 feet high, the entire project took only 14 years and less than $1 million to complete. Mount Rushmore receives more than 2 million visitors per year.
4. If you’re a loner, consider taking up residency in South Dakota. It’s the fifth least populous and the fifth least densely populated of all 50 states. Speaking of population, Pierre, South Dakota is the second least populous state capital in the U.S. As of the 2010 census, it only had 13,646 residents.
5. Over the years, the Badlands National Park in southwestern South Dakota has yielded a treasure trove of fossils that date as far back as 35 million years ago. In fact, one of history's most famous dinosaurs, Sue the T. Rex, was discovered near the Badlands in 1990. At 42 feet long and 12 feet high at the hips, she's considered to be the largest and most-complete T. rex ever found. You can check out Sue if you visit The Field Museum in Chicago, where she's part of the institution's permanent collections.
6. During the Black Hills Gold Rush, prospectors settled in lawless frontier towns like Deadwood, where brothels, gambling, and drinking were rampant and most arguments were settled with a shooting match. The town's rough-and-tumble past was brought to life in the HBO drama Deadwood, which spanned three seasons from 2004 to 2006.
7. Geologists claim that the Sioux quartzite spires in Palisades State Park are 1.2 billion years old, and that it is one of only a handful of areas in the U.S. where red pipestone can be found.

Dakota Pathways: Water and Dust
Dakota Pathways: A History was a 20-part series used by Educator's across South Dakota for use in their classrooms. The 14 minute long segments explore some of the history of South Dakota. Water and Dust is the 7th segment produced in the series.
Who, or what, am I? I have been here for many years, mostly in South Dakota. From where I am, I have seen so much happen to the lands throughout the years. I can see all of the mighty rivers in South Dakota, and I have seen how they have helped this state develop.
I have seen holes in the ground that shoot water toward me, as if they were trying to stand by my side. I have cried many tears for South Dakota, but have also held back tears for long periods of time. During these stubborn times, there are others that try to be like me, but they do not serve the same purpose as I, so therefore do not resemble me. In the past there have been people who try to get my attention with dynamite, and even explosives, but I mostly just ignored them.
Sometimes, however, I would laugh so hard at them, that happy tears would fall. It's amazing what people will do to get your attention. I have seen times when my actions, or lack there of, have caused suffering to the people of South Dakota, and for that I am sorry.
I am high and mighty and cannot be touched by a human hand.

Dakota Pathways: Playing Games
Dakota Pathways: A History was a 20-part series used by Educator's across South Dakota for use in their classrooms. The 14 minute long segments explore some of the history of South Dakota. Playing Games is the 14th segment produced in the series.
So far the match has been exhilarating and exhausting. My brother has 5 players left on his team and I have 7 left on my team. One by one we have eliminated each others players during this grueling contest.
I see an opening, so I send one of my players forward. My brother fires back by ordering one of his players back. It was a daring and risky move. It's my turn now -- his player made a costly move. I am able to eliminate two of my brother's teammates by sending one of my players diagonally across the playing field.
It's hot in here, sweat drips off of my brother's face as he assesses the damage. His muscles tighten as the veins become visible in his neck. Our eyes meet, he smiles, but I can tell he is nervous. I feel very confident that the contest will end soon and I will be victorious.
Then I notice his tension seems to reside, his face begins to glow as he makes his next move. The unthinkable has happened. He begins to jump my checkers one by one, to the left and to the right until all of my checkers are gone. Kevin wins and the game is over.
Sports and games come in many forms. Some require extreme feats of strength, while others require large amounts of metal power. But, they all must be enjoyable and unforgettable. We should all play to have fun and to connect with family and friends.
Rapid City, South Dakota
Rapid City (Lakota: Mni Lúzahaŋ Otȟúŋwahe; Swift Water City) is the second-largest city in the State of South Dakota, and the county seat of Pennington County. Named after Rapid Creek on which the city is established, it is set against the eastern slope of the Black Hills mountain range. The population was 67,956 as of the 2010 Census. Rapid City is known as the Gateway to the Black Hills and the City of Presidents. The city is split by a low mountain ridge that divides the western and eastern parts of the city. Ellsworth Air Force Base is located on the outskirts of the city. Camp Rapid, a part of the United States Army National Guard, is located in the western part of the city. The historic Old West town of Deadwood is nearby. In the neighboring Black Hills are the popular tourist attractions of Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, and Wind Cave National Park.
