Tarnetar fair at Trineteshwar temple in Surendranagar, Gujarat
A three day long fair, Tarnetar at Trineteshwar temple in Surendranagar in Gujarat. The fair is being organized from past 200 years on Rishi Panchami. The traditional cenotaphs of Maldharis. The unmarried boys and girls gather here for Hudo dance. The Hudo dance allows them to choose their life partner.
The Trineteshwar Temple is 900 years old and there is a small water body in front of the temple and there is a saying that during the fair holy river Ganga arrives in the water body.
Here the many colorful costumes, glittering ornaments and free-spirited movements of folk dances, all combine to create a memorable scene. As the dancers surge in waves of circular movement, the incessant throbbing of the drums keeps them moving in unison, and the drum beats continue throughout the day even as the dancers change from one group to the next. Many kinds of folk dances are performed; by far the most popular is the raas, in which dancers hold sticks to clack against those of other dancers. As many as one to two hundred women perform rasadas in a single circle, to the beats of four drums at a time and the tunes of jodia pavas or double flutes. You may also see people break out into a spontaneous hudo.
Rabari women of nearby Zalawad perform the famous circular folk dance called rahado. Their marital status is indicated clearly by their costumes; a black zimi (skirt) means she is married. But if a woman is wearing a red zimi, it means she has not yet tied the knot, probably seeking a husband. The potential husbands seeking brides are elegantly dressed in colorful dhotis, artistically designed waistcoats and a head-cloth twisted at an angle, moving about the fairground at Tarnetar with striking umbrellas, advertising the bachelorhood they are keen to relinquish.
Numerous sadhus and bhajan mandlis (religious music groups) are engrossed in singing continuously, accompanied by folk instruments.

INDIA: GUJARAT: MEN AND WOMEN HUNT FOR SPOUSE AT MARRIAGE FAIR
Hindi/Nat
It might not be spring, but in the Western Indian state of Gujarat, it is time once again for the annual Tarnetar marriage fair.
Thousands of young men and women from all over the state visit the fair to look for a potential spouse, carrying on a tradition that dates back 5-thousand years.
And all the while, their choice of life partner is carefully observed by their parents, whose judgement will decide whether the couples who get together at the fair will be allowed to marry or will be forced to go their separate ways.
These elaborate costumes are for a purpose - to charm a future spouse.
Holding colourful umbrellas that identify them as prospective grooms, the young men of Gujarat throng the annual Tarnetar fair, a traditional hunting ground for brides for centuries.
The umbrellas are exquisite pieces of art, embellished with mirror work and intricate embroidery.
For the young women, the fair is a liberation.
Decked out in their best jewellery, they, too are out looking for a suitable husband.
The fair is a treasured occasion for all concerned - it is one of the rare occasions when girls from the rural communities are allowed to meet with boys in public.
SOUNDBITE: (Gujarati)
The young men keep on roaming around in the fair looking for a suitable match. When they like a girl , they approach her. There are so many girls here - they can charm many hearts. They come here all decked up to get married.
SUPER CAPTION: Anil Bhai, Visitor to Fair
Nearly 500-thousand people from all over Gujarat visit the Tarnetar fair every year.
The town, normally a quiet hamlet in the interiors of the state, takes its name from the temple of Trineteshwar, which means god with three eyes.
Young women praying for perfect husbands visit the temple to seek the blessings of the divine creator.
Their family elders come dressed in traditional headgear, to handle the wedding negotiations once the initial choice has been made by the girl.
The eligible bachelors take part in events to display their masculine charms and impress their future wife's family.
But there is no getting away from the rigid caste barriers - and the marriages have to abide by these restrictions or risk social reprisal and boycott .
SOUNDBITE: (Hindi)
This society has many restrictions on the marriage alliances. There are different castes headed by different chieftains - marrying outside caste will make them an outcast in the community.
SUPER CAPTION: A.R. Mogul, Tarnetar Tourist officer
But the influence of modernity is beginning to touch even this traditional event.
Many young men have rejected the cumbersome umbrellas in favour of coloured glasses which match with their bright costumes.
A flute in hand playing a popular tune completes the modern get-up of the traditional bride hunter.
But the event most looked forward to by both the eager suitors and the would-be brides is group dancing.
The dancers swing in gay abandon enjoying an all too brief rendezvous with social freedom.
Once the flirtations over, the couples get back to established social norms and press straight on with seeking family approval.
SOUNDBITE: (Gujarati)
I have already chosen one. Now I want my parents to choose.
SUPER CAPTION: Makand Ananda , bride hunter
Tarnetar fair lasts for three days and during this time many alliances are made.
For the lucky ones, the fair will mark the beginning of a lifelong romance.

If you think you are prepared to walk out of your mundane experience and free-fall into a whirlwind of colors, romance and music, then head for the Tarnetar Fair.
Based on the legend of Draupadi's swayamvara, this fair is a celebration of ethnic Gujarat’s folk-dance, music, costumes and the arts, centered around young tribal men and women seeking marriage partners. But even for those not interested in finding a spouse, the romance and excitement in the air are captivating, and every year the fair seems only to grow in popularity, attracting visitors and tourists from Gujarat, elsewhere in India, and even abroad.
Numerous sadhus and bhajan mandlis (religious music groups) are engrossed in singing continuously, accompanied by folk instruments.
The Tarnetar Mela covers a large part of the Tarnetar village with a huge number of stalls put up to sell beautiful local handicrafts unavailable elsewhere, along with ethnic jewelery, statues of deities and traditional attire with tiny mirrors embroidered into the clothing. There are also merry-go-round rides, photographers stalls, magic shows and tattoo artists who attract a large variety of visitors.
Legend says that this fair has been held here since antiquity. Its origin is linked with the story of Draupadi’s swayamvar, where the great archer Arjun performed the difficult task of piercing the eye of a rotating fish with an arrow, by only looking at its reflection in the water. Through this feat he won his bride Draupadi.
Historically speaking, this festival tradition is believed to have begun 200-250 years ago. The fair is held on the grounds of the temple of Triniteshwar Mahadev, which means the three-eyed God. The old temple that used to stand in Tarnetar was ruined, but a new one was built by the Gaekwads of Vadodara in the 19th century, and is now the focal point of the festival. It stands on the bank of a rivulet and opens into a beautiful kund. It is locally believed that this site used to be the original course of the Ganga River at some point in history, so a dip in the temple tank is considered by pilgrims to be as auspicious as a swim in the holy Ganga.
Interesting facts:
The Kolis of Saurashtra initiated the custom of embroidering umbrellas, which are exquisitely elaborate in terms of embellishments. The embroidery of each is unique and rises from the edges all the way to the top, with beadwork and patchwork in the design as well. Small colorful handkerchiefs are attached all around the edge, to attract further attention. These men spend over a year embroidering their umbrellas. Their intention is to entice the girls with their art, cloths and head gear and impress them, so that they can propose them for marriage. It is not surprising that, before the fair is over, they usually meet the lady of their choice.
Being the most important fair of Saurashtra, Tarnetar is attended by more than 50,000 people. The main castes that have been participating are the Kolis, Rabaris, Bharwads, Khants, Kanbis, Kathis, Charans, the Harijans and the Desh-rabaris. With its growing reputation, visitors from rest of India and many different parts of the world are also seen here.
