Aylesbury News, Tring Brewery Picks Up Bronze Medal at the Great British Beer Festival.
A beer brewed in Tring is one of the top three in the UK today.
Death or Glory, which is made at Tring Brewery, won the Bronze Medal at the Great British Beer Festival.
It's run by the Campaign for Real Ale.
Bingham's Vanilla Stout, brewed in Berkshire, was named the best beer of 2016 at the Champion Beer of Britain Awards Dinner held on Tuesday evening (9 August) at the Hilton Hotel, Olympia, London.
The award comes after almost a year of local tasting panels and regional heats seeing the best beers across the UK invited to compete at the Great British Beer Festival.
Final judging for the competition was held at the huge beer festival which opened its doors to the public on August 9 and over the next week will see more than 50,000 people visiting Olympia in London to sample their choice of more than 900 beers, cider and perries – including the chance to try the nation's best beer.
Bingham's Vanilla Stout is a 5 per cent Dark Stout infused with vanilla and dark malts to create a smooth and dark beer.
The Kent based Old Dairy brewery's Snow Top claimed the silver award in the Champion Beer of Britain competition. The 6 per cent ABV Old Ale has already taken a gold award at CAMRA's National Winter Ale's Festival and is described by the brewery as the perfect winter warmer with fruitcake and marmalade flavours.
Placing third in the competition was Tring brewery's Death or Glory, a 7.2 per cent Barley Wine, brewed by appointment to the Queen's Royal Lancers. The beer is described by the Hertfordshire brewery as being a rich and sweet barley wine with a complex nature.
CAMRA national director responsible for the Champion Beer of Britain Competition Nik Antona said:
This year all the judges commented on how high quality all the beers were in the final stages of the competition and what a wide range of styles and beers they had to try and choose between.
Bingham's Vanilla Stout is packed full of comforting flavours and I'm sure it will be a popular Champion Beer Choice. It's great to see a speciality beer win the award for the first time in the history of the competition and our congratulations go to the brewery.
And there's been some love for the Tring brew on Twitter as well:

DEATH or GLORY
The Queen's Royal Lancers
Death or Glory takes it's name from the regimental motto of the Queen's Royal Lancers and was first brewed back in the early 90's after the idea for the beer was conceived by a previous director of the brewery, Kerr Hill, a former Lancer himself. Ever since, it has traditionally been brewed every year on October 25th to commemorate the anniversary of the Charge of the Light Brigade, when in 1854 the 17th Lancers made their fateful charge into the Valley of Death.
The Queen's Royal Lancers was formed in 1993 by the amalgamation of the 16th/5th and 17th/21st Lancers. The regiment's Colonel-in-Chief is Her Majesty the Queen.
Until recently it had only be available on draught to local pubs and friends over Christmas and New Year, however, late in 2007 we were approached by the QRL's to see if we would bottle the beer for the Officers and Sergeants Mess. We were delighted, so by special appointment to the Queen's Royal Lancers, we now offer Death or Glory ale in 330ml bottles. The strength of 7.2% abv comes from the fact Kerr Hill was part of the 17th/21st Lancers.
The bottled beer is available in a filtered and carbonated format and is a dark aromatic, estery strong ale brewed using the finest Maris Otter malt and premium aroma hops. Once fermented it undergoes a prolonged storage allowing a complexity of flavours to mature. It is extremely drinkable for its strength and is available from our shop for £2.00 per bottle.
All at the brewery would like to wish the Queen's Royal Lancer's good fortune in their endeavours in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
If you would like more info on the Queen's Royal Lancer's please visit their website at qrl.uk.com

The story of Colley's Dog
Pondering his recent run of bad luck, John Butterfield of Tring came to the conclusion that he was bewitched. Remembering an old dispute he had with a local woman Ruth Osbourne, it wasn't long before he had roused enough local feeling to implicate her in a witch-hunt. Despite valiant attempts to hid, Ruth and her husband John were soon apprehended by a mob led by one Thomas Colley -- a local chimney sweep. The old couple were dragged to Marston, near Tring, where they were bound and thrown into the pond, the standard test for a witch. Old and frail, the Osbournes died from their ordeal, but it was not long before the forces of justice caught up with the ringleader. On August 24, 1751, Colley was gibbeted for his crimes at Gubblecote Cross where ever since, his spirit roams in the form of a huge black dog.
