Uglic (Russia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Uglic in Russia.
On the upper reaches of the Volga, around two hundred and eighty kilometres north of Moscow, is the Russian town of Uglič. The Dimitrijvskaija Church is crowned with blue, onion-shaped domes that are adorned with stars. It was built in 1692 out of stone and replaced a wooden church. Everywhere are illustrations of the mysterious death of the heir to the throne on the fifteenth of May, 1591. The red colour of the church is a symbol of bloodshed. Ivan the Terrible had two sons. The eldest, Fjodor Ivanovitch, was thought to be insane but was crowned anyway and was supported by Boris Godunov. As Godunov’s sister, Irina, was married to Fjodor Ivanovitch, his dream of becoming Tsar was almost a reality. When news that the eight year old, Zarevitch, had fatally run into a knife while playing, it caused havoc. Three hundred years later the symbol of the Dimitrijevskaija Blood Church was returned to the place in which the savage deed had taken place. Subsequently, the Romanov Dynasty ruled for three centuries and Uglič became a place of sadness and remembrance of one of the most spectacular events in Russian history.

Russia
My visit to Russia begins along the Baltic Sea in Saint Petersburg. Saint Petersburg is Russia's second-largest city as well as its cultural capital. The Historic Center of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next I continue on to Moscow, Russia's capital and most populous city. Here I visit historic Red Square and the Kremlin. The Video concludes with my visit to the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergii in Zagorsk.

In the early 1920s, it was still used as a prison and execution ground by the Bolshevik government. Today it has been adapted as the central and most important part of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg History.

The Kremlin (fortress) in Moscow built to ward off the Mongol hoards still impressive & holds the rich history of the country. A virtual museum in itself. The oldest Kremlin in Russia is in Novgorod where the School of Music of Rachmaninoff & the St. Sophia Cathedral is located. The beautiful city of St. Petersburg is a treat, home of the magnificent Hermitage, the largest museum in the world. The opulent castle at Peterhof and its fabulous garden w/ the largest Fountains in the world is unforgettable. Also called Versailles of Russia.

Orthodox priests from Western Europe get together in Moscow ahead of historic reunification
Archbishop John (R) meets reporters in Moscow. © RT
Over 100 clerics, led by French Archbishop John, have gathered in Moscow to partake in three-day festivities that mark the reunification of the majority of Russian-tradition parishes in Western Europe with their mother Church.
The archbishop arrived late on Friday, accompanied by other high-ranking priests. The upcoming reunification is expected to revitalize the religious life of the Orthodox faithful in Western Europe, he said, expressing great joy over the return.
“We want to tell the Russian people that we’re truly happy about this return, which closes the painful chapter in our history. But now it’s been overcome thanks to the Moscow Patriarchate and to the understanding and generosity of all our members,” Archbishop John (Renneteau) said.
While the official confirmation of unity is expected to be announced on Sunday at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, the reunification is already agreed.

Orthodox schism: Priests in Western Europe reject Constantinople, side with Moscow
Back in September, the majority of parishes, governed by Archbishop John, voted for joining the Moscow Patriarchate. On Friday, Russia’s Patriarch Kirill signed a charter on the reunification. One copy of the charter will be presented to Archbishop John, while the other scroll will be kept in Moscow.
The reunification festivities are expected to last for three days and feature quite an eventful program for the archbishop’s delegation. On Saturday, they visited the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius outside Moscow – the major Russian male monastery and one of the key spiritual centers of the Russian Orthodox Church. On Monday, Patriarch Kirill and Archbishop John are expected to hold a mass together.
The historic reunification effectively brings to an end the 100-year schism within the Russian Orthodox Church that followed the 1917 Revolution and mass emigration of the priests and faithful. The reunification is also a result of the ongoing disorder in the Constantinople Patriarchate, triggered by its decision to recognize an “independent” – schismatic – Ukrainian Church.

The now-defunct Archdiocese of Russian Orthodox churches in Western Europe, once led by Archbishop John, used to be subordinate to Constantinople. Late in 2018, however, Constantinople unilaterally disbanded this exarchate in an attempt to get a better grip on its parishes. The archdiocese rejected the dissolution order and ultimately decided to return to its mother Church.
