Haile Selassie High has been plunged into despair after a dispute between two male students ended with one being st@bbed to death outside the school compound on Thursday afternoon.
The identity of the deceased, a third form student, has not yet been released.
Preliminary reports are that the two teenagers became embroiled in an altercation after school was dismissed. The dispute escalated and the third former was st@bbed. He was rushed to the Kingston Public Hospital, where he succumbed to the injury.
Up to midday Friday, the police were still seeking the other boy involved in the dispute
Counselors from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information meanwhile visited the school early Friday morning and offered counseling for members of the school community.
According to Principal Lorenzo Ellis, administrators at the school had no knowledge of a dispute between the boys before the incident.
He said that support counseling has been given to the victim’s mother.
Ellis said, “we are offering counseling support to the parent and this morning we invited in the guidance and counseling team from the ministry to give grief counseling to the students and there will be follow-ups.
“We are looking at ways in which we can continue counseling the students who have been affected, and also to work with the police so that we can provide better security for the students on the streets,” Ellis said.
Principal Ellis said that police have been in contact with the parent of the alleged attacker, who has gone into hiding
According to Ellis, the school has improved its safety and security procedures over the years, with gate searches and visits to classrooms, while advising the students of order and orderliness on a regular basis.
