River Otter in Dallas Texas near Trinity River Audubon Center
River Otter Lutra canadensis in the Great Trinity Forest June 30, 2012. Somewhat of a rare sight in texas to see a river otter, even rarer to see one inside the city limits of Dallas, Texas. The otter was as interested in us as we were of it. Deep in the Great Trinity Forest animal encounters like this are common where rather than running away, the animals are perplexed as to why you are there.

Hiking the Trinity River in Dallas, Texas - Unfortunately there's a lot of trash
Hiking off-trail along the Trinity River... several miles southeast of Dallas Texas. Unfortunately there was a lot of trash along the bank from when the river rises. A sobering look at the effects that large cities have on the environment and ecosystems around them.

Texas Bluebonnets 2013 at McCommas Bluff Preserve Dallas, Texas
Texas Bluebonnets on the Trinity River at McCommas Bluff Preserve in Dallas, Texas April 20, 2013. These are the remains of a once much larger colony of Texas Bluebonnets that once populated the limestone bluff tops of the historic McCommas Bluff. A Dallas Water Utilities project destroyed much of the bluff top due to poor construction practices and lack of attention to the sensitive nature of the preserve. The bluebonnets seen in the video are all that is left. Too close to the cliff edge for a bulldozer or 18 wheeler to dare venture.
Underwater at Big Spring Great Trinity Forest Dallas Texas
Underwater view of crawfish and minnows at Sam Houston's Historic Spring, also known as White Rock Spring and Big Spring located in the Great Trinity Forest Dallas, Texas. This ancient spring is one of the only free flowing natural springs left in Dallas County. Cold crystal clear water flows out of the bedrock perched aquifer in this pool. Surrounded by trees hundreds of years old, this spring has served man for thousands of years as evidenced by the arrowheads, flint tools and Native American burials that surround the spring site. President Sam Houston's treaty party camped on this spot 169 years ago in July of 1843. Pioneer families including John Neely Bryan and the Beemans lived on this site for many years.

Nature in our Backyard: The Trinity River & Great Trinity Forest, Dallas, TX
Dallas, Texas has a tremendous natural resource in the Trinity River and Great Trinity Forest. However, the reality is most people know little about the true nature of river and forest as they exist year-round. Sun to Moon Gallery and four talented photographers have worked to change that. For ten years now, the photographers have spent time on and along the river and in and around the forest, including many beautiful but lesser-known areas, creatively interpreting with their cameras. In the process, they have created an ever-expanding and changing body of work that includes engaging new photographs of the flooded Trinity in Spring 2015 by Scot Miller and R.P. Washburne. This short film gives viewers a glimpse of the natural beauty to be found, just minutes away from downtown Dallas. Amazing!

The City of Dallas by itself is the third most populated in the state behind Houston and San Antonio. DFW is home to the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, and you'll regularly be reminded of The Metroplex's mass enthusiasm for the team. With more shopping centers per capita than any other city in the US, Dallas is also known as a shopper's paradise.
Dallas is Texas' most mythical city, with a past and present rich in the stuff that American legends are made of. Deepwood Landfill Law Enforcement Covert Task Force Trinity River Dallas, Texas
Video clip from the criminal investigation into the Deepwoods and South Loop Landfills in the 1990s. Obtained via open records request. Video shows illegal dumping and cash money exchanges between delivery trucks and dump operators in addition to hazardous materials being dumped on the site. This location became one of the worst toxic landfill disasters in Texas history. Remediation in the late 1990s and early 2000's allowed for the brownfield to become the home of the Trinity River Audubon Center.
The Deepwood and South Loop 12 dumps had been used for sand and gravel mining and illegal dumping for over twenty-five years. Substantial deposits of uncovered solid waste, including household waste, tires, demolition debris, insulation, asphalt shingles, abandoned automobiles, jugs and bottles labeled sulfuric acid and nitric acid, 55-gallon drums, and syringes, were visible on the properties.
In addition to the state civil actions, the State criminally prosecuted Nethery and Herman Lee Gibbons, an operator at the Deepwood dump. Both were convicted of violating Texas organized crime laws relating to the financing of the illegal dump, and both were incarcerated in Texas on those charges.
The City informed the State and the United States Environmental Protection Agency that the Deepwood dump poses long-term fire and health hazards for the neighborhood and requested funds to remediate the dump. The State and the EPA refused to provide funds to clean up the dump.
