A Jig in the Park - Ryan Cupples-Menendez

This is an impromptu performance in Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow during the World's Week in August 2015 by 13 year old Ryan Cupples-Menendez. The tune played is John Paterson's Mare.

Ryan comes from Newtownards in County Down and plays in Cleland Memorial Pipe Band based in Bangor.

I strayed upon Ryan and his father, Glen, in Kelvingrove Park. I was impressed by Ryan's playing and we got talking. I happened to have my camera with me and Ryan agreed to play a tune for me and chose this traditional jig.

In 2014 Ryan won the under 14 class at the All Ireland Solo Piping Championships. He turned 14 shortly after this recording, and in September 2015 he won the under 16 class at the 2015 All Ireland Championships. Congratulations to Ryan!

Ryan will be competing in the 2015 Falkirk Tryst Piping Recital and MacMurchie Competition in Falkirk Trinity Church in the centre of town on Saturday 10 October. This light music competition is for pipers under the age of 21. Ryan was third in 2014. The event starts at 9.30 am - a great chance to pop in some time during the day and hear a very talented cohort of young pipers.

The tune, John Paterson's Mare, seems to be at least 200 years old and was associated with country weddings in the Scottish borders. It is also the name of a satirical work by James Hogg (nicknamed the Ettrick Shepherd) published in The Newcastle Magazine in January 1825. There is an almost identical Northumbrian tune called The Black and the Grey.
