Every evening at sunset, the towns and cities along the Ganga river and its tributaries perform an Aarti ceremony. Some of them are simple prayers with a handful of priests and people, but some of them are choreographed spectacles. One such spectacle happens at Triveni Ghat at Rishikesh in Uttarakhand.

Rishikesh, also known as Hrishikesh is a city, municipal corporation and a tehsil in Dehradun district of the Indian state Uttarakhand. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India, it is known as the 'Gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas' and 'Yoga Capital of the World'. It lies approximately 25 km (16 mi) north of the city Haridwar and 43 km (27 mi) southeast of the state capital Dehradun. According to Census of India, 2011 Rishikesh had a population of 102,138 making it the seventh most populated city in the state of Uttarakhand. It is known as the pilgrimage town and regarded as one of the holiest places to Hindus. Hindu sages and saints have visited Rishikesh since ancient times to meditate in search of higher knowledge.

In September 2015, the Union tourism minister Mahesh Sharma announced that Rishikesh and Haridwar will be the first in India to be given the title of twin national heritage cities. Due to the religious significance of the place, non-vegetarian food and alcohol are strictly prohibited in Rishikesh. The city hosts the annual International Yoga Festival.

Hṛṣīkeśa (Sanskrit: हृषीकेश) is a name of Vishnu composed of hṛṣīka meaning 'senses' and īśa meaning 'lord', thus 'Lord of the Senses'. The name commemorates an apparition of Vishnu to Raibhya Rishi, as a result of his tapasya (austerities), as Lord Hrishikesha. In Skanda Purana, this area is known as Kubjāmraka (कुब्जाम्रक) as Lord Vishnu appeared under a mango tree. Another legend says that fierce fire broke out here. Lord Shiva was angry with Lord Agni and cursed him. Then Lord Agni prayed here for the expiation of his sins. Hence it is also known as 'Agni Tīrtha' (अग्नि तीर्थ) — the holy place to do penance of Lord Agni or Fire God.


Rishikesh has been a part of the legendary 'Kedarkhand' Legends state that Lord Rama did penance here for killing Ravana, the asura king of Lanka; and Lakshmana, his younger brother, crossed the river Ganges, at a point, where the present 'Lakshman Jhula' (लक्ष्मण झूला) bridge stands today, using a jute rope bridge.The 'Kedarkhand' of Skanda Purana, also mentions the existence of Indrakund at this very point. The jute-rope bridge was replaced by iron-rope suspension bridge in 1889. After it was washed away in the 1924 floods, it was replaced by the present stronger bridge. Another similar suspension bridge Ram Jhula was built in 1986 at nearby Sivananda Nagar.

The sacred river Ganges flows through Rishikesh. Here the river leaves the Shivalik Hills in the Himalayas and flows into the plains of northern India. Several temples, ancient and new, are along the banks of the Ganges in Rishikesh. Shatrughna Mandir, Bharat Mandir, Lakshman Mandir are the ancient temples established by Adi Shankaracharya. Shatrughna Temple is near Ram Jhula and Lakshman Mandir is near Lakshman Jhula.

Ganga Aarti is organized at Triveni Ghaat, Rishikesh and Haridwar two times in a day, morning (at sunrise) and evening (sunset). Starting time will depand on sunrise and sunset timing at Haridwar. Morning Ganga Aarti is not as famous as evening one.
Ganga Aarti means prayer for River Ganga. Prayers are dedicated to gods and godesses. River Ganga is not just a river in India, It is Divine Mother. River Ganga gives life in the form of water. The same water also removes sins when you take a dip in its holy water. River Ganga also gives liberation to souls. Its not just a river but whole culture itself. Historically millions of people are living on the bank of the river ganga. For agriculture her water is still precious for India.

Situated on the banks of the holy river Ganges, Triveni Ghat, as per its name, is the spot of the confluence of the three sacred rivers- Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. These rivers are considered extraordinarily pious and pure in the Hindu religion and are celebrated by every follower of this faith. It is believed that a dip in the holy waters by Triveni Ghat can purify you and cleanse you of all sins, worries and fears. Many followers of the Hindu religion believe in the magical powers of these waters. The experience of walking into the widely worshipped River Ganga- letting the powerful yet calm waters surround you, feeling each droplet of water tingle against your skin as it sucks away your stress and all your worries, the transcendent ability of the water to let you feel at peace and sensing each sin being washed away under the gentle caress of the Lord's smile- is an experience of a lifetime and one you must not miss.
Triveni Ghat plays an essential role in Hindu Mythology and is also mentioned in the epics Ramayan and Mahabharat. They say the great Lord Krishna was shot in the leg by an arrow shot by Jara- a hunter at this very spot. The Triveni Ghat is also where the chattri of Lord Krishna was constructed. In fact, the ghat is considered to be the cremation ground for the great Lord Krishna.

One of the two main Ganga Aartis in Rishikesh which is situated at the foothills of the Himalayas in India.

Ganga Aarti is a ritual performed on the banks of the River Ganges everyday evening. The ritual is performed at Rishikesh, Haridwar and Varanasi, through which the river flows. Ganga Aarti takes places facing the river by lighting lamps which are circled in a clockwise direction by the Pandits accompanied by the chanting of Bajans, beating of drums and bells. No footwear is allowed near that area. Ganga Aarti is a devotional ritual that uses fire as an offering made in the form of a lit lamp in Ganga river. Small lamps with candles and flowers are floated down the river. The offerings are made to Goddess Ganga - Ma Ganga

Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh in Uttarakhand. One can see the board of Ganga Seva Samiti at the entrance of Triveni Ghat and there is another board of free health checkup camp. One can see the board of Municipal Corporation of Rishikesh board. Office of Ganga Seva Samiti near Triveni Ghat. Devotees walk towards the Ghat to take a dip in the river Ganga. There are signboards of No Smoking, Keep the Ganga clean and some other instruction of keeping the ghat clean by Ganga Seva Samiti. A board of Ganga pollution control unit.

Triveni Ghat is situated bank of the holy river Ganges. This scared ghat used for bath for most of pilgrims. The main daily event of the attraction is the evening Aarti of Goddess Ganga also commonly called as Maha Aarti. You can see the devotee's offers prayer during aarti.

The arti ceremony at Trivani Ghat takes place daily at dusk. An Awe-inspiring sight, when flame of belief illuminates the entire environment and the mind and body rejuvenated by the hymns recited in praise of the Ganges.
