Exploring the Trona Pinnacles
The Trona Pinnacles are an unusual geological feature in the California Desert National Conservation Area. The unusual landscape consists of more than 500 tufa spires (porous rock formed as a deposit when springs interact with other bodies of water), some as high as 140 feet, rising from the bed of the Searles Lake (dry) basin.
The pinnacles vary in size and shape from short and squat to tall and thin, and are composed primarily of calcium carbonate (tufa). They now sit isolated and slowly crumbling away near the south end of the valley, surrounded by many square miles of flat, dried mud and with stark mountain ranges at either side.
Access to the site is from a BLM dirt road (RM143) that leaves State Highway 178, about 7.7 miles east of the intersection of State Highway 178 and the Trona-Red Mountain Road. The 5 mile long dirt road from State Highway 178 to the Pinnacles is usually accessible to 2-wheel drive vehicles, however, the road may be closed during the winter months after a heavy rain.
The Pinnacles are recognizable in more than a dozen hit movies. Over thirty film projects a year are shot among the tufa pinnacles, including backdrops for car commercials and sci-fi movies and television series such as Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Disney's Dinosaur, The Gate II, Lost in Space, and Planet of the Apes.

Dry Camping at the Trona Pinnacles in California
See full blog post -
Our last desert boondocking spot during this years snowbird season was the Trona Pinnacles BLM area in California. It's located on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains a few hours drive from LA.
In an otherwise flat featureless desert about 500 ancient tufa pinnacles sprout up from the desert floor, as high as 140 feet.
In this video I show you some of the bizarre landscape and our campsite location.

LOST IN THE CALIFORNIA DESERT | Trona Pinnacles | Full-Time Family Travel Week 37
The California desert is enormous. Losing your keys there is not a good thing. But that's just what happened to us while we were house sitting in Ridgecrest, California. This was a week we will never forget, but not for the reason you might think. Along the way we saw the Trona Pinnacles, Red Rock Canyon State Park, and the famous California Super Bloom with its incredible poppy fields.

I made this trip in March, 2016. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Trona Pinnacles Ultra HD Aerial 4K
The Trona Pinnacles are tufa remnants from the Pleistocene era. A massive runoff spilled from the Sierra Nevada into a chain of inland seas that interconnected lakes stretching from Mono Lake to Death Valley and included Searles Lake. They are from 10,000 to 100,000 years old varying in age across that spectrum.
We had a blast camping here. I got a chance to photograph the Milkyway and record Drone Footage with my Phantom 4 which comprises this film. Thanks for watching!

DRONE VIDEO: Ancient Trona Pinnacles in California Desert
Fly above the 10,000 year old Trona Pinnacles with the UFO seekers. The Trona Pinnacles are located near Trona, CA.
The Pinnacles are roughly 10,000 years old and are the result of underwater lava vents when a large glacial lake was present in the area. Lake levels can be seen on the adjacent mountains. The area is located just south of Death Valley.

Wyoming's Trona Resources - WY Cultural Geology
Many of the Earth’s minerals are used for industrial purposes, but consumers may not realize they also benefit from these minerals in a number of their everyday products. Trona is such a resource, with Wyoming being home to some of the largest deposits in the world and leading the nation in their production.
Trona has a wide variety of manufacturing uses as well as consumer uses. It is mined to make soda ash, which is used to make flat glass for the automotive and for a variety of glass bottles. Many people may not know that baking soda, the orange box in countless refrigerators, is soda ash.
