Troodos is the largest mountain range in Cyprus, located in roughly the center of the island. Troodos' highest peak is Mount Olympus at 1,952 meters, which hosts four ski slopes. The Troodos mountain range stretches across most of the western side of Cyprus. There are many famous mountain resorts, Byzantine monasteries and churches on mountain peaks, and nestling in its valleys and picturesque mountains are villages clinging to terraced hill slopes. The area has been known since antiquity for its mines, which for centuries supplied copper to the entire Mediterranean. In the Byzantine period it became a great centre of Byzantine art, as churches and monasteries were built in the mountains, away from the threatened coastline.

Pedoulas is a village in the Nicosia District of Cyprus, located at an altitude of 1100m in the Troodos Mountains. It is known for its 12 churches, varying from a 15th-century chapel to a 1930's cathedral. The Church of Holy Cross is the main church of the community. Its construction began in 1933 and completed in 1935.

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean that, due to its proximity to the Holy Land, was one of the first countries in which Christianity was introduced. With their well-preserved churches, the Troodos Mountains are located in the heart of the country. This remote and inaccessible area was soon a refuge for persecuted Christians and a safe place for threatened treasures such as revered religious icons. In Pedoulas, a small village in the Marathasa region, is the Archangel Michael Church that dates back to the fifteenth century. From the outside it looks like a barn but inside are a number of colourful Byzantine wall paintings including Saint Georg Diasoritis on his white horse with flowing cape, decorated shield and spear. Troodos is a low-lying mountain range with many hills and forests and within its centre is the largest and wealthiest monastery on the island, Kykkos, which is located some distance from the nearest village and is situated at an altitude of one thousand one hundred and forty metres above sea level on the mountain of the same name. The entire monastery complex looks like a fortress but beyond its somewhat severe exterior are two inner courtyards with colonnades on each level. Its wealth and fame stems from an icon of Mother Mary that is stored within the monastery’s church. The large village of PalaichorI contains the Metamorfosis Tou Sotirou Church which is situated amid a vineyard and towers over the village, with stunning views. Byzantine art, archaeological monuments and World Heritage churches, all of this is to be found in Troodos, a concentration of priceless treasures of world culture contained within a relatively small area that is probably unique in the world. In Troodos, a tumultuous past and a glorious history accompanied the guardians of both faith and tradition in their quest for peace.

Troodos Mountains are located in the center of the island of Cyprus. The highest peak is snow-covered Mount Olympus (also spelled Mount Olympos) at 1,952 meters above sea level. There are various Byzantine churches and monasteries in the region, including the most well-known Kykkos Monastery. Troodos Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and definitely worth visiting.
In this fourth part of my Cyprus Road Trip VLOG series, join me as I discover Mount Olympus, the High Cross and the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross above Pedoulas village, Kykkos Monastery and the beautiful Cedar Valley. The drive through Cedar Valley was one of the most breathtaking road trips I have ever done and the video footage doesn't do this epic part of the island any justice.

January 2020 - this is a trip to the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus - in search of snow - Mount Olympus at 1.950m
Olympus, or Chionistra, (Greek: Όλυμπος or Greek: Χιονίστρα) at 1,952 metres (6,404 ft), is the highest point in Cyprus. It is located in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus. Mount Olympus peak and the Troodos Square fall under the territory of Platres in Limassol District. A British long range radar currently operates at Mount Olympus' peak.
Storyline: “Oh yes! In Cyprus you can enjoy the sun during Summer but also go skying in the mountains during Winter or just have a nice walk in this magical wintery landscape! For this occasion we brought the action camera and the mobile phone to show you what it’s like to travel up there and see the environment “
* Roads were very clean, last km’s were getting icy though, we installed snow chains. You can see this back in a few fragments in this film. Sorry but safety first!
* Lesson: do not use snow chains if you want smooth video footage. But you might be taking a lot of risk. 4WD is not always sufficient.
* Lesson: do use snow chains - especially the final km’s up the hill - if you want to prevent your car from sliding backwards to the cars behind you or mess something up in front of you.

Omodos village and Troodos Mountains, Cyprus - Unravel Travel TV
Omodos is a charming little village in the mountains and while it attracts a lot of holidaymakers, it still retains a character and traditions. Its also a great place to eat, drink and shop. Omodos is best known to be the wine centre of the inland region. A festival is usually celebrated during the month of August and they have a large religious event on the month of September.
In the centre of this village lies the Monastery of the Holy Cross, which contains an alleged fragment of the Holy Rood the cross on which Christ was crucified and brought to Cyprus by St Helen in 327 AD.
The skull of St Philip, the fifth Apostle, is also there and its preserved in a silver casket. Religious, cultural and thrivin. Here you'll find plenty of local crafts like leather bags, belts and clothes, pottery, copperware and lace.
Tourists are generally very familiar with the beaches and the coastal resorts but many are unaware that there is a stunning inland with mountains, pine forests and waterfalls this area is a paradise for nature and outdoor lovers. For the sun worshipper leaving the beaches and the bars isn't easy but you'll be rewarded for your willpower if you drive up into the Troodos Mountains. Despite being a huge fan of beaches, I was most impressed with the inland. This is where you get a taste of the real Cyprus.
Some people of course rather mountains to sea and there are places here like New Helvetia Hotel where you can have a romantic wedding reception and intimate setting.
