Experience breathtaking mountain passes, impressive canyons, the national flower of Namibia, the Welwitschia, the lunar landscape and the fascinating desert. Learn alongside the origin of Henno Martin's book If there is war, we go to the desert to know and see where it is the best apple pie in Southern Africa. We pass on this stage and the Tropic of Capricorn, which presents a less impressive.

Walvis Bay (Afrikaans Walvisbaai, German Walfischbucht or Walfischbai, all meaning Whale Bay) is a city[3] in Namibia and the name of the bay on which it lies. The town covers a total area of 29 square kilometres (11 sq mi) of land.[4]
The bay is a safe haven for sea vessels because of its natural deepwater harbour, protected by the Pelican Point sand spit, being the only natural harbour of any size along the country's coast. Being rich in plankton and marine life, these waters also drew large numbers of southern right whales,[5] attracting whalers and fishing vessels.
The Dutch referred to it as Walvisch Baye and the English as Whale Bay. In its eventual formal incorporation, it was named Walfish Bay, which was changed to Walvish Bay, and ultimately to Walvis Bay. It has also been referred to as Walwich Bay[6] or Walwisch Bay.[7] The Herero people of the area called it Ezorongondo.[8]
A succession of colonists developed the location and resources of this strategic harbour settlement. The harbour's value in relation to the sea route around the Cape of Good Hope had caught the attention of world powers since it was discovered by the outside world in 1485. This explains the complicated political status of Walvis Bay down the years.
The town is situated just north of the Tropic of Capricorn in the Kuiseb River delta and lies at the end of the TransNamib Railway to Windhoek, and on B2 road.
Walvis Bay, with its large bay and sand dunes, is an important centre of tourism activity in Namibia. Attractions include the artificial Bird Island, centre of a guano collection industry, the Dune 7 sand dune, the salt works, the abundant birdlife, and a museum. Kuisebmund Stadium, home to two clubs in the Namibia Premier League, is also located in the city. The beach resort of Langstrand lies just a few kilometres north. The Walvis Bay Export Processing Zone is an important facet of the local economy.Economy and infrastructure
Logistics
Walvis Bay is an important logistical port for the southern African region, providing port facilities for the import and export of cargo for the rest of Namibia, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Botswana. Since the Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) was established in 2000, cargo moving through the port has increased from 30,000 containers a year to 370,000 containers in 2016. As of 2017 the port was being upgraded to increase its capacity to move 1 million containers a year by 2019. Bureaucratic and logistical problems at the city's competitor port at Durban, South Africa have diverted traffic to the port at Walvis Bay. Ninety-five percent of all cargo hauled overland through Walvis Bay is carried by truck.[37]
The Walvis Bay Corridor Group is gearing up to increase import/export-business opportunities in Namibia. The Namibian National Development Plan expects to complete the expansion programme of the Walvis Bay port by 2019. Because of the harbour's geographical positioning, authorities plan to gain a footprint in providing landlocked Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries with a vital logistical hub.[38] In addition to the importance of the port, development would strengthen trade corridors which consists of current road and rail networks.[38]
Fishing
In Walvis Bay there are different fishing companies like Hangana Seafood, Caroline Fishing, Benguella Fishing Company, Cadilu Fishing, Etosha Fisheries, Kuiseb Fishing Enterprises, Blue Ocean Products, Benguella Sea Products, Consortium Fisheries, Talanam

Cycling Namibia - Part 2 (South) : From Windhoek to the Orange
This is the sequel of Cycling in Namibia part 1 (North), with 1400 new kilometers from Windhoek to the Orange river, bordering South Africa, in July and August 2014.
The Part 2 (South) features the C26 through the Khomas Highland and the Kupferberg pass, the forever blue skies around the HESS telescope, the very steep Spreetshoogte pass near the Tropic of Capricorn, the incredible views from the dunes over Dead Vlei and Sossusvlei, lots of wildlife and boks cutting my road, lots of scenic gravel roads too, as the Namib desert is a cycling paradise, the D707 around the Tiras mountains that broke a bit of my frame, a sandblasting experience on the road through the Sperrgebiet to Lüderitz, Kolmanskop ghost town and the Garub wild horses, and ends with the gorgeous scenery of the C13 along the Orange river and the Aussenkehr grape farms.

Namibia road trip day 11 driving from Sossusvlei to Solitaire to eat apple pie in the Namib desert
Solitaire in Namibia was once just a lonely farm fuel station in the middle of the Namib desert, a convenient place for the growing Namibia tourist market to fill up with petrol on their way to Sossuvlei and Sesriem canyon. But now Solitaire is so much more.
The apple pie at Solitaire is somewhat famous so make sure you call in if your are driving on the Solitaire road, probably on your way to Sossuvlei and the red sand dunes, maybe to camp at Sesriem.
In this video we will start at Sesriem camp, at the entrance to Sossusvlei by packing up camp and checking in after arriving late the night before after reception had closed. (For more about Sossusvlei you should check out my vlog Namibia Day 10 ).
After packing up our roof tent we head out on the road to Solitaire in search of lunch and in particular the famous apple pie (or apple crumble) at Moose's bakery in Solitaire.
Together we will discover something about Solitaire history and how Solitaire has grown to become such an iconic place to visit in Namibia, and also get an insight into the Damara language...if you have never heard one of the African click languages then you should watch this video just to hear it!

Namibia on the road
They call it Africa for beginners because Namibia is very easy to go around and discover the country on your own. And so we did. This video is perfect to watch if you are considering to go to Namibia, as it covers the classic itinerary in the country.
Given the Xmas holiday period we booked car plus some accommodation from Europe. Despite we travelled at the beginning of the raining period (January), the weather was great (almost always sunny and warm). We did a classic itinerary given we had only 10 days to spend. With a couple of more days, we recommend to reach Opuwo to see the Himba people. With further 3/4 days, you can add the Namibian Kahalari and the south.
DAY 1
Arrival in Windhoek. Pick up of the car, first walk in the city. Dinner at Joe Beerhouse
DAY 2
From Windhoek to Sesriem. Ca 5 hours of beautiful driving getting the first experience with Namibian gravel roads. Most road in Namibia are gravel but are relatively large and well maintained. Afternoon in Sesriem spent visiting the canyon and climbing the Elim dune.
DAY 3
Wake up at 5.30am to enter the park as it opens (6.10am). Drive the 45km to get to the Dune 45 and first breathtaking climb of the dune. Then straight to Deadvlei and Sussusvlei until around 1pm. As it is summer (up to 45C), we spent the central hours of the day sleeping near the sleeping pool of the lodge. Then short tour and beer to watch the sunset from the savannah
DAY 4
Another early wake up and we are on the way to Swakopmund. First stop is at Solitaire, to taste the apple pie which is recommended in every guidebook. Then stop at the Tropic of Capricorn. The first part of the drive is beautiful with savanna landscape. After you cross the Kuiseb pass you enter a total new landscape as you are entering the Skeleton Coast. A couple of hours of drive in the desolation, and we reach first Walvis Bay, and then Swakopmund where we spend the afternoon exploring the German soul of this city.
DAY 5
The day was spend in an excursion. In the morning we went by boat in the Walvis bay, watching seals, birds, shipwrecks ... In the afternoon, we took the 4x4 excursion to Sandwitch Harbour, a secluded bay very difficult to reach unless you are an experienced off-road driver with the right car. The place is amazing and the top moment was the lunch on the beach, eating oysters, in a beautiful and unspoiled oasis completely untouched by civilisation
DAY 6
Another day on the road (6 hours with stops). From Swakop, we headed north along the Skeleton Coast stopping at the Leila shipwreck and Cape Cross, a colony of thousands of fur seals. From there we drove to the Damaraland which we reached in the early afternoon, on time for a visit to the Twyfelfontein archaeological site (rock engravings and paintings dated between 2,000 and 6,000 years ago). A stop to the Herero women along the roads is a good spot to get some nice souvenirs.
DAY 7
On the move again, direction Etosha. But before we spent an hour at the petrified forest and getting some fuel and lunch in Khorixas. From there, the road to Etosha is paved again. We arrived in Etosha at the Okaukejo Lodge. A couple of hour to rest and we are in the bush again with the car spotting the first animals (giraffe, zebra, impala)
DAY 8
Whole day spent in the car, slowly wandering around the Etosha park. Despite the raining season (the animals are spread in the bush and the vegetation is more dense) we spotted all the key animals with the exception of the felines (esp. the lion was missing).
DAY 9
Return to Windhoek. A nice long way, with a couple of nice and clean villages to stop by to refuel and buy some food and souvenirs. Evening passed enjoying a beer in the great outdoor garden at Joe Beerhouse.
DAY 10
Visit of Windhoek. A small city, not much to see but good for spending a few hours walking around. Flight in late afternoon.

Namibia roadtrip day 10: road to Sossusvlei watch the sunrise over the sand dunes and visit dune 45
Travel with Simon on my Namibia road trip as we head out into the sand dunes at Sossuvlei to see the biggest dunes on earth. See how not to avoid getting stuck in the sand! On the way back to camp at Sesriem we will stop for breakfast at Dune 45.
On day 10 of our Namibia roadtrip we are heading out into the sand dunes at Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert to watch the sunrise.
The Sossusvlei road from the the campsite at Sesriem is through thick sand, if you don't want to get stuck then park your car at the 2x4 car park and take the shuttle. It's cheap and runs about every 15 minutes in open safari vehicles with super flat tyres.
There are a number of dunes you can visit on the way back including Dune 45 (Big Daddy) which is possibly the most photographed individual dune and great for sunset (for viewing the sunset itself rather than the sun setting over the dunes). Another famous dune worth a visit is Dune 5 or Elim Dune.
Sossusvlei forms part of the Namib Naukluft park, but don't get confused, the Namib Naukluft is a very large park and to see the red sand dunes at Sossusvlei or to see Deadvlei you must enter through the park gate at Sesriem. The camp ground known as Namib Naukluft is some 100km away in a different section of the park entirely.
For more information on camping accommodation near Sossusvlei see these videos:
