Amazing Hiking and Camping on Ilha Grande in Brazil (Big Island)
Ilha Grande in the state of Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful pristine destinations in Brazil. It is easily accessible by a quick one-hour ferry ride from Angra dos Reis. There are no vehicles on the island so be prepared to hike or boat your way around. Whatever your means, it is well worth the trip. The natural beauty is breathtaking. There are camping spots along the way as well as several tiny villages, many with a restaurant or two. Be prepared to see and hear lots of wildlife from several species of monkeys and birds to armadillos and lots of sea life under the water.

More than 1000 m of elevation with gorgeous views over the Island and the blue Atlantic ocean after a vigorous uphill running in the moist and green tropical world of the peculiar Papagaio peak.

First Day in Ilha Grande, Brazil - Around Abraão Village and Making a Caipirinha at the Resort
After about a 2 hour drive from Rio and another 45 minute boat ride, we've arrived on the island paradise of Ilha Grande - in English, literally Big Island. This island is paradise defined - secluded, quiet, beautiful beaches with clear, warm water, all backed by amazing mountains with rain forest scenery.
These clips were all taken the first day - we start off in the village of Abraão, or Abraham, and continue toward Black Beach, named for the volcanic ash sand seen on the small, rocky yet beautiful beach. Afterward, we head back to our resort and sit on the balcony taking in this view - en route we picked up supplies to make our own caipirinhas!

Christ the Redeemer - World Wonder (Brazil) - In Another Minute (309)
- - The massive statue of Christ the Redeemer (Portuguese: Cristo Redentor) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was declared one of the New 7 Wonders of the World in 2007. While I visited the statue atop Corcovado Mountain in January 2013, it wasn't until I filmed another World Wonder (the pyramid at Chichén Itzá) that I decided to cut a video specifically about Christ The Redeemer. You guessed it: I'm now aiming to see all 7 Wonders of the World and make 1-minute Moving Postcard videos about them.
The 30-meter tall Jesus Christ statue has been looking at Rio de Janeiro since 1931. Several international men were involved in designing and creating the Art Deco monument: Brazilian Heitor da Silva Costa, Romanian Gheorghe Leonida, and French Paul Landowski and Albert Caquot. The statue, made of concrete and soapstone, weighs 635 metric tons.
Of course, the statue itself is impressive. But I think the ride up the mountain with the tram (Trem de Cocovado) is the most fun part or the excursion. It is possible to hike to the top of Cocovado Mountain on an easily visible trail through the Tijuca Forest National Park. While the hike is free, you'll still have to pay an entry fee (under 10 USD) at the top if you want to see Christ the Redeemer up close.
The bird's-eye views of Rio de Janeiro, including the neighborhoods Copacabana and Ipanema, are the enough reason to get up on the mountain. Of course, if you're trying to collect Wonders of the World, then you must go up there - even if it's yet another cloudy day in Rio.
Right, it rains a lot in Rio. It's rain forest climate, after all. The low-hanging rain clouds combined with a still very bright sky makes dealing with video footage challenging. Especially shots of the statue against the bright, cloudy sky were very difficult to match to how the eye would see them. Working with this older material again, made me realize how much better my current camera handles such challenges - and that I'm still not great at color correction in post. Nerd talk, I know.

Lopes Mendes Beach - Ilha Grande, Brazil
After the long hike from Abraão we have arrived at the world famous Lopes Mendes Beach, a highlight of Ilha Grande, Brazil! This hike starts at Praia (Portugese for beach) Julia and winds its way through the rainforest for roughly 4 miles before reaching Lopes Mendes Beach - however, en route there are 3 additional beaches where you can rest, eat and drink if you prefer, and these 3 beaches are beautiful as well!
The first leg of this hike is from Julia Beach to Palmas Beach - this portion takes roughly an hour and is, far and away, the most grueling phase of the hike, albeit still moderate in nature. Walking all the way to the end of this beach you will pick back up the T10 path and the next stop in Mangues Beach, another 30 minutes or so of hiking away.
From Mangues Beach - where the boats drop-off and pick-up passengers for those who choose to skip the hike - it is another 10 minutes or so to Pouso Beach, and finally another 20 or so minutes of walking to the beautiful Lopes Mendes Beach.
This beach is consistently rated as one of the best in the world, and it is easy to see why - wonderful azure water, fine warm sand and the beach itself is very long. All that mixed with the fact that it is usually quite empty - though this is changing as time goes on - makes it a day to remember. Start the hike early to beat the hot afternoon sun and maximize your time on the beach!
