TRACC Step Reef Project
The drop off on Pom Pom island can be quite steep in places which makes it difficult for the sea floor to stabilise enough for the corals to grow back after being blasted for fishing. One method to stabilise the base is called the step reef. Science officer Kit Wui Sien runs us through the step reef and how it has been improved from previous attempts.

Short video from our stay on Pompom island in TRACC organization. TRACC is a Tropical Research and Conservation Center, which do a great job with marine conservation.
What we did during our stay there was:
- soft coral, hard coral and sponges collection
- soft coral, hard coral and sponges planting
- bottle reef making, mapping bottle reef on a slope and checking coral condition on it
- biodiversity measure on Kalapuan island

Beautiful Destinations in Sabah, Malaysia -- Pom Pom Island
Over the past 30 years, the world has lost roughly half of its coral reefs due to environmental and human influences. These reefs are some of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on the planet, providing homes from countless species of marine life and generating billions of dollars per year for the fishing and tourism industries — but their existence is in jeopardy, and their preservation starts with you.
Join the Beautiful Destinations team as we explore the waters near Pom Pom Island in Malaysia alongside the Tropical Research and Conservation Center (TRACC), an environmental organization actively working with volunteer scientists from around the world to restore its coral reefs.

Our Big Trip - Diving and volunteering @TRACC on Pom Pom Island (Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia)
We loved it! Absolutely worth the time and money we spent in this three weeks with all the lovely (staff and volunteer) people on the small Island Pom Pom at the eastcoast of Borneo, Malaysia.
We learned a lot about the aquatic life, did some dive certificates with good instructors and equipment and could help in some interesting projects which should help to keep the housereef and all the live down there alive.
Drone footage by Loïc and Anaïs - thank you very much!

Marine Ecology Research
Southern Cross University researcher Associate Professor Amanda Reichelt-Brushett explains the importance of tropical marine research. The focus of my research is on tropical marine ecotoxicology and helping to understand the sensitivity of tropical communities as opposed to temperate communities. This link to tropical systems has enabled me to do a lot of my research in eastern Indonesia and through collaborations with various universities there including University of Patti Mira.

SMEE Semporna Marine Ecological Expedition 29 Nov - 19 Dec 2010
From 29 November until 19 December 2010, an international team of marine biologists from Malaysia, the Netherlands and the USA will be on an expedition organized by the WWF-Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Universiti Malaya and the Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity (NCB) Naturalis.
This Semporna Marine Ecological Expedition (SMEE) will assess marine biodiversity and coral reef health in Semporna Priority Conservation Area, recognized as a Globally Outstanding Priority Conservation Area within the Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion, at the apex of the Coral Triangle -- the world's centre of marine biodiversity.
Semporna is unusual because of its rich mix of reef types, representing 5 major geomorphological reef types. Such areas usually have high levels of biodiversity because of the mix of habitat types and ecosystems. There are also strong indications that that the Malaysian Semporna area, together with the Indonesian Berau region, share some rare and unique species.
The survey is based on comparable methodologies that have been used in many areas of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Solomon Islands since 1998. There are only very few examples of similar studies being done previously in Malaysia. There is a need to document the coral and fish richness of all of Malaysia's reefs to clarify the relationship with the existing definition of the Coral Triangle.
The overall objectives of the expedition are threefold: First, to assess the coral reef biodiversity; second, to assess the coral reef status and reef population health; and, third, to enhance conservation and outreach efforts through better understanding of the marine ecosystems of Semporna. A modified ReefCheck methodology and reef profiling will be used at each site for two depths, in order to take a snapshot of the reef health.
Jointly leading the expedition are Dr. Bert Hoeksema of NCB Naturalis, Leader of the biodiversity team, and Affendi Yang Amri of UM, Leader of the coral reef status team. Other expedition participants include marine scientists from USA, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, other researchers from the Netherlands,, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Sabah Parks.
Follow the expedition blog, where the expedition members will update their daily work and share new findings, as well as share their stunning images and short videos. Visit: ncbnaturalis.nl
The preliminary results of the expedition will be announced at a press conference in Kota Kinabalu on 20 December 2010.
The Semporna Marine Ecological Expedition is made possible in part by funding from Adessium Foundation.

Kapikan reef 2013 before blast fishing
This is a historical record of Kapikan reef swum along a gps recorded track by a snorkeller towing a gps. It was beautiful at the end of 2013 with approaching 100% coral cover.
Sometime in 2014 the blast fishers arrived and decimated it. The reef has been destroyed --- it has suffered from well over 250 blasts at preliminary analysis from swim transects. Another video from Aug 2015 along the same GPS track will be uploaded so that scientists and students, poliicians and park managers can study both before and after such a destructive event.
TEMENGOR-BIODIVERSITY IN THE FACE OF DANGER (2005) Part 1 of 2
Malaysia is home to one of the richest ecosystems on earth. Her virgin jungles are the planet's oldest. Sadly, as in the rest of the world, the Malaysian forest is steadily declining.
In the 1940s, three quarters of Peninsular Malaysia was forested. Today, one half of this remains, a plight painfully evident in one of the most biologically significant forest on earth -- The Temengor Forest Reserve in the northern state of Perak.
As a production forest, Temengor is vulnerable. Not surprisingly, loggers have made disturbing inroads. Intense lobbying by the Malaysian Nature Society to gazette part of its state park proved futile. Although an adjacent forest to its north, now known as Royal Belum, was accorded to protection in 2003, Temengor was not. This is unfortunate, as studies have shown Temengor to be immensely rich in biodiversity. Deforestation will deprive Malaysians of a priceless legacy and the threat is looming.
Is Temengor Doomed?
This documentary offers a wake up call who hold the key to Temengor's survival. It also serves to introduce the ordinary Malaysian to the concept of biodiversity, its critical role in providing fresh air, clean water, and potentially lifesaving medicines. Scientists and conservationists highlight the need to protect Temengor and its plants and animals. This is an appeal to all who value biodiversity and understand the urgency to protect one of nature's last frontiers.
