Nature Continues to Disappear in Canton, MI
Learn more:
Crossing The Lines is an exploration of what unites us and divides us as a people and as a region here in Metro Detroit. This video is a part of Crossing the Lines: Canton.
In 1990, roughly half of Canton’s land was agricultural or vacant. By 2008, that number dropped to roughly 10 percent as more and more land has been acquired for development.
This is Ridge Road, in Northwest Canton. In the early 1990s, residents in the area walked this road and three others nearby, carefully detailing the flora and fauna. They found 140 kinds of animals, birds and insects… and more than 120 types of plants, including 14 that are protected. With this information, Ridge Road was designated a Natural Beauty Road.
Natural Beauty Roads were created by a state act in the 1970s to highlight and offer some protections for roadways with extensive native vegetation. But now, residents who live in the area are worried about the road’s future. That’s because land west of the road is being acquired by Pulte Homes - one of the largest homebuilding companies in the country. Pulte has hired an engineer to draw up a site plan for a subdivision of up to 36 homes. Some residents hoped the Natural Beauty status might halt development, but the designation doesn’t actually restrict roadside development on adjacent private property. Also, Canton’s Master Plan allows for the building of one home per acre in this area. And as you can see there are already other subdivisions nearby.
According to Canton’s Master Plan:
“As development continues toward the west and begins to encroach on the community’s open space and natural amenities, it will become increasingly important and difficult to balance the demand for new residential growth and the township’s goal of preserving these natural features and retain the semi-rural character of the community.”

The older, more daring attendees enjoyed rides like the Screamer, ferris wheel and mini roller coaster.

A tribute to the vanished world of Italian immigrant families that fostered culture and community in the South End of Albany, NY.
Our original film, The Neighborhood That Disappeared, told the story of the South End of Albany, NY which contained over one-third of the City’s ethnic population and was seized and bulldozed to make way for a government office complex that changed the face of the City forever.
This companion documentary, Echoes From The Neighborhood That Disappeared, is a tribute to intrepid Italian immigrants, many of them impoverished, who crossed an ocean to travel to a foreign land where they built a thriving community of business owners, craftsmen, laborers and professionals centered on family life.
This companion film examines how a way of life was brought to an abrupt halt by the power of Eminent Domain and unrestrained urban renewal. Echoes also documents how the residents of this neighborhood struggled to maintain their identities as they lost their homes and businesses while adjusting to the turbulent forces of change spawned during the twentieth century.
This second film derives its name from the belief of those who resided in Albany’s South End that remnants of this community still survive in the culture, values and moral code by which they were taught to live their lives. For them, the physical destruction of this community is a scar that will never heal.
